  • My Feijoa tree, also known as Pineapple Guava, is in full bloom. This tree is actually not a guava and is a misnomer. It has gorgeous, fragrant and edible flowers as well as very unique, delicious fruits. The tree is drought tolerant, cold hardy and heat tolerant.

    The flowers are edible and considered one of the best parts of the plant!

    They are actually related to guava from what I’ve found, but they aren’t guavas themselves

      Exactly what I was thinking. I mean they are in the same botanical family afterall (myrtaceae)

    I havent found anyone who actually prefers these! The texture is funky and the flavor is subtle. Ive freezed, dehydrated, and even pureed them and they still are unpleasant in all forms

      @ Tyler, thanks for the honest opinion. I purchased a jujube tree after reading different reviews and have determined that I hate the fruit.
      It isnt for me; I feel nauseous and suffer from low blood pressure after eating the fruit. 👋🤮 I'm ready to depot and sit this thing curbside on trash day.

    I love the fruit, alas I have had mine for years without much fruit, I suspect that it isn't self pollinating and I have no room for another, but the flowers are delicious too.

    A great addition to our yard as well. The edible flowers have a light sweet creamy flavor and the fruit is delicious. Other than eating it off the bush, has anyone made anything else with fruit?

    Beautiful example! I have one, but it is not quite as full. I think it's because it's cooler here (No. CA). It is very slow growing. This is the first year that mine has had a lot of lowers and it is 5 years old.

    I didn't know about self pollinating, if I have the flowers, will fruit come later, I've been waiting 4 years for the flowers, I bought 2 because it was recommended, and, the petals are delicious, I know a lot about gardening, but you've taught this old guy a few things, thank you for what you do, keep up the good work

    You can eat the petals and leave the rest of the flower and it will still produce fruit but the petals taste like icecream!

      I don't like the petal taste. If you've ever sprayed Lysol into the air then walked through the air mist and tasted it, that's what the petals taste like to me.

    Feijoas are very common here in New Zealand but interestingly not a lot of information I can find online. Do you know about their root system? I have a spot near our house, similar to yours but I’m worried it’s too close and the root will grow too big. Thanks!

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but they won't grow true to type. Feijoa varieties are often not self-fertile and many require cross pollination. If you grow from seed, you may find yourself needing 2 unique plants. Mine is fortunate to be self-fertile, though I'm sure adding another would be beneficial.

I don't thing it matters in ground or container, the important thing is its needs a bit of protection in the winter. mulch, wrap with some remay fleece and/or old christmas lights on cold nights.

    I have 9 of these 1 grafted nazemetz, and 8 unknown
    from tissue culture, all are frujting, flowering oldest is 7 years 10 ft wide 7 ft tall? I get 100+ fruit on the largest tree, the fruit is delicious, its an underused fruit tree that withstands cold to 20-15? but has very poor Fruit storage, I grew it as a windbreak, however the stems break easily. The fruit doesn't taste good when its grown in very hot weather 100-110 degrees I know because it was bland tasting last year Heatwave vs previous years.This tree prefers cooler weather, 50- 85degrees in summer

    • @xrsjohnm
      @xrsjohnm 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Develops the best flavor in summer weather under 90-95 degrees

    • @xrsjohnm
      @xrsjohnm 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I describe the flavor as similar to a
      brand of store bought candy called " sweettarts"

    • @xrsjohnm
      @xrsjohnm 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has very exacting climate requirements to develop the best flavor if yours tastes bland it means the Tre isn't grown in the exact climate requirements to develop its true flavor, it prefers, cool to warm, moderate humidity summers not hot and chilly winters with light frost

    Thanks! How old is your tree?
    Mine is supposedly self pollinating. However it's 3 years old and so far no fruit. It is a tall thin tree that has grown flowers the past 2 years.
    I have tried touch pollinating but so far so success. Next year I will try with a brush.
    Everything else in my yard has been pollinated by the bees except for this one.
    So I will take your advice from now on.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My tree is on its 3rd season in-ground. It flowered and fruited the previous 2 seasons. If you are getting flowers but no fruit set, either it isn't self-fertile and requires a companion, or you'll need to hand-pollinate. Make sure to try hand pollinating. If you hand pollinate and still get 100% flower drop, you likely have a variety that needs pollination. A lot of varieties sold are random seedlings, and even if it's the seed from a fruit of a self-pollinating variety, it will be a random cross.

    • @lindag9975
      @lindag9975 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheMillennialGardener Thanks!
      It's a little late for this year because I'm in the Phoenix area and the flowers have dropped.
      But before next year I might buy it a friend. Otherwise I will brush pollinate it. Touch pollinating wasn't enough for it the past 2 years.
