Weeks before the Master's at Augusta National, Rory Mcilroy made a somewhat controversial decision to shorten his driver. Should all golfers shorten their driver to get increased accuracy and driving distance?? The GolfBusters discuss this in their latest video.

I recently switched the shafts in my PingG425 Driver and G425 3-wood.
With the 3 wood shaft in my driver I am longer and much, much more accurate.
A super cool side effect is my 3-wood with a driver shaft.
I'm crushing this club now !
Off of the tee, downwind it is ultra long.
Off the deck I picked up 10-15 more yards with the Driver shaft in the 3-wood.
    Additional Note :
I was so pleased with the results above that I went and bought a PingG425 7-wood, and had them put a 3-wood shaft in it.
The 7-wood has become an absolute weapon for me from 210 !
    Win, Win, Win !!
All test results are with Titleist Pro-V1 golf balls.

I grabbed my grandpa's walmart spec driver from 2003 just to mess around with. I ended up hitting it super straight but about 40 yards shorter. The lower yardage didn't matter because I was able to see the green on my second shot rather than behind trees, off fairway, and in bad shape. I didn't realize his club was shorter until this video and now it all makes sense! Looks like I'll be shortening my modern driver and putting it back in the bag!

Years ago, I played with a 44-inch, 7 Degree TaylorMade Driver. The caddies at Chambers Bay were astounded that a 5'8" middle-aged man could hit it as far as I did. Recently shortened my Ping 430 Max to 44 inches and purchased new heaver swing weights to bring the Driver back to D3 D4 swing weight. Let the Tests Begin!

Another solution is to choke up for accuracy. Also, tee boxes are not level for drainage reasons. You can change position to adjust up to 2 driver club lengths behind the marker. The ball must be in the tee box. Your stance can be outside the tee box.

When shortening your driver, not only is swing weight affected but also flex. Shortening the shaft 1" will drop the swing weight by 3 points but also increase the stiffness by 1/2 a flex spec.

I've been playing with a driver length of 44.50" for the last four years. My current driver, Titleist TSi1 is at 44.50", instead of the stock length of 45.50" because it is easier for me to hit and make more FIR'S. My old TaylorMade M6 D-type was also at 44.50" instead of the stock length of 45.75". I will never play a stock length driver, ever. I will never give up accuracy for length and a poor dispersion rate.

for Rory playing a 44" length Driver is right for a guy his height. most Drivers have a 45" playing length shaft in them when purchased which is ideal for some around 6 feet tall, pending a proper wrist to floor measurement. a 46" playing length shaft is meant for some like Dustin Johnson who is 6'4", I believe the last time he had a big win his Driver playing length was 45.75"
