It sounds like you passed though so that's great! For future reference, whenever there's a new exam version to be released, certification vendors will specifically say if it's a clean cutover to the new version of if there's a time period where you can still take the previous version once the new version is officially launched. Vendors like CompTIA and Cisco, which label their exams specific versions, really stick to this process and the window is around 6 months. Other vendors like (ISC)2 will instead give a cutover date and don't offer the previous version after that point. The vendors using a cutover date typically give a decent amount of time prior (i.e., 4 to 6 months) so that if you're starting to study the day of the announcement, you'll have enough time.
There's always an overlap of the previous exam and the new exam. The 601 voucher probably isn't good for a 701 test, it's just that the 601 exam isn't retired until July 2024. After you pass nobody cares what version you took.

You can buy them until that point. Typically, vouchers are valid for 12 months, but obviously, at this point, you wouldn't have the full 12 months to take the exam before it's retired. Remember that you might have a different expiration date if you already have a voucher.

CompTIA refreshes their exams about every three years so it was something that was already being anticipated. Most people do not really have a need to look back once they pass the exam for good reason.

The DOD has requirements of what they will accept but they do not set anything regarding CompTIA or their certifications. I don't know which requirement you are specifically referring to but there is no difference as far as the DOD is concerned.
Many CompTIA certifications used to be "good for life" or "GFL" until CE was implemented. CE stands for Continuing Education, which implemented ongoing education requirements to maintain your certification. This happened in 2011, so you can't get a non-CE version of Security+ today and haven't been able to for some time.
I recommend watching or rewatching the video because I talk about which version that you should take, why I think that, and important dates to consider.
I'm currently taking the google cyber course which i plan to complete in the next month or two - once im done is there any benefit to taking 701 over 601?
Question for you, good sir. Do you think Google's new Cyber Sec course is as good as Comptia Sec+? Does it teach the same things, and which one is more affordable? I'm really thinking of taking either Sec+ OR google's, but I'm not sure which one would be the best decision.
The Google Cybersecurity Certificate is not a comparable option to the CompTIA Security+. Certainly there is some overlap as they both are trying to target similar audiences (new to Cybersecurity) but honestly, I have some very strong criticisms of the Google Cybersecurity Certificate. If you are just looking at the cost of the certification itself, then the Google option is less expensive however the return on your investment is also significantly lower. I recommend grabbing my free eBook ( jongood.com/getstarted/ ) where I've included a roadmap of skills and certifications that will set you up for success.
I just published the only review of the Google Cybersecurity Certificate that's not sponsored by Google or Coursera so you don't get all biased opinions you'll see elsewhere ( th-cam.com/video/lZ6p_djgNWI/w-d-xo.html ).
Im scheduled for my net+ next tuesday, and was planning on jumping straight into sec+ but if there isnt material ready yet, I might go for something else in the mean time. How long does it normally take for the textbook to come out?
Good luck on your Network+! Just out of curiosity, why are you going to wait? You have a ton of time to knock out the current version before it's retired. The timeline for new materials can vary so I wouldn't really use that as a deciding factor. I found one book that comes out on October 31, 2023 ( amzn.to/409O5mN ) so if you're really set on the new version, that might be a good option to use.
Hey im doing my google cert for cyber then plan on taking security+ and network+. Was thinking about taking A+ to get my foot in the door would you recommend this method? Any suggestion would be great
That will never happen for a lot of reasons, at least not in its current form. Also the DoD 8570 is no longer the current standard and was replaced by the DoD 8140 several years ago.
I would be very cautious about treating any certification as simply a screening technique. Anything that you list on your resume is fair game to ask you questions about during an interview.
@@JonGoodCyber everyime i interview they never ask me about my certifications. its always more technical and behavioral but that dont mean the certs were useless cause i did learn a lot from them. when i did not have them i never got even a call back
Great information. Q: Would it be better to take the 601 before it retires or just take the 701? I’m entry level TOC (technology operations center) and will have many BS in November. I’m looking to start my certification path. I don’t want to waste my time studying the 601 if it will be better to get the 701. I’m just not sure there are any training for 701 yet.
You will definitely want to rewatch this video because I cover what my recommendation on which version to take based on specific criteria. You won't typically see training for the new version until just prior to the launch of the new exam version or just after it launches.
Im actually in an interesting situation. Im taking a cybersecurity course in college thats using the 501 objectives and im deciding between 601 and 701
Why are they still using 501 objectives? That's really strange as the exam changed almost 3 years ago but those objectives were released nearly 6 years ago! Anyways, the SY0-701 doesn't even launch until November 2023 but every exam has differences from the previous version. Make sure that you look at the exam objectives for whichever version you are going to attempt to make sure you have covered everything that you need. Personally, I always use the current materials for whichever exam version that I'm going to take as there is too much risk if you don't...but I really don't recommend using two exam versions prior to take the SY0-701 as you are asking for issues.
How are you able to put out so much great content @Jon Good? My other channel is on it's fourth podcast episode and I feel like I am already running out of material. Guess I need relevant topics. Keep up the good work man!
Per CompTIA, "Vouchers for the SY0-601 version are still valid through July 31, 2024." So unless you are going to take an abnormally long amount of time to complete the exam, you should be fine.
Totally doable...I also encourage you to check out the training and practice exams we have on Cyber Training Pro ( www.cybertrainingpro.com/p/comptia-security-bundle ).
Although practical exams provide benefits such as performing specific tasks, they cannot determine all indicators of somebody being able to perform a job in technology, IT or Cyber Security. Multiple choice questions aren't a perfect science, but when done correctly, they can expose a candidates inability to use deductive reasoning and analytical thinking to answer questions (not perform a task). Many times this is done with limited information, and is a very real world situation. The career field isn't just about answering questions or performing certain tasks...it requires the ability to do both.
The cert is a checkbox for HR. The content does not matter to hiring personnel. Someone with a 601 and someone with a 701, they're the same.

Google’s certifications aren’t taken seriously in the tech industry. The Security+ is.
I'm currently doing such course, and I was thinking in doing the Comptia Sec+ after I finish the Google one, are you saying they are similar?
The Google Cybersecurity Certificate is not a comparable option to the CompTIA Security+. Certainly there is some overlap as they both are trying to target similar audiences (new to Cybersecurity) but honestly, I have some very strong criticisms of the Google Cybersecurity Certificate. If you are just looking at the cost of the certification itself, then the Google option is less expensive however the return on your investment is also significantly lower. I recommend grabbing my free eBook ( jongood.com/getstarted/ ) where I've included a roadmap of skills and certifications that will set you up for success.
Thank you for your input, my friend. Means alot ❣@@JonGoodCyber
I just published the only review of the Google Cybersecurity Certificate that's not sponsored by Google or Coursera so you don't get all biased opinions you'll see elsewhere ( th-cam.com/video/lZ6p_djgNWI/w-d-xo.html ).
Just passed Security+ last month. Thank GOD I had been studying for 601 for about 7 months. I just refused to take 701, lol.
Congrats on the pass! What's up next?
@@JonGoodCyber Taking a step back. Studying Network+ then proceeding with CySA+
Great video with the exception of the camera angle changes.
I'm glad that you enjoyed the video!
Hey im doing my google cert for cyber then plan on taking security+ and network+. Was thinking about taking A+ to get my foot in the door would you recommend this method? Any suggestion would be great
I recommend following the roadmap included in my free eBook ( jongood.com/getstarted/ ).
Thank you so much!
You're welcome!
Thank you forbthe update on 701.
You're welcome!
I just wish the Google Cyber Cert was DoD 8750 certified.
That will never happen for a lot of reasons, at least not in its current form. Also the DoD 8570 is no longer the current standard and was replaced by the DoD 8140 several years ago.
👍🚀Algorithm boost. 🚀👍Thanks again. Great content.
Appreciate it!
I just passed the 601
Congratulations that's great! What's next up?
Having either one is just interview screening anyways it’s not like you missing out on something crazy
I would be very cautious about treating any certification as simply a screening technique. Anything that you list on your resume is fair game to ask you questions about during an interview.
@@JonGoodCyber everyime i interview they never ask me about my certifications. its always more technical and behavioral but that dont mean the certs were useless cause i did learn a lot from them. when i did not have them i never got even a call back
For me, im studying to get the 601. do you think i should focus on the 701 material or keep going for the 601?
I recommend rewatching this video as I discuss my recommendations for which version that you should take.
I had Printed out the 701 Exam Objectives, yesterday. Interesting.😃🧠
Glad to see that you were tracking the changes! What are your thoughts about it?
Where do you get this pls ?
The link is in the video description.
Waiting for the differences (all caps) 6 minutes into it.
I guess you better keep watching so that you get all the content that's packed in this video.
Yeah... You definitely need to talk to someone about that dude.
Changing the world one day and video at a time!
That's a school you shouldn't be going to then
I don’t wanna be that guy but you’re most likely to fail using old material to study, get up to date bro
How are you able to put out so much great content @Jon Good? My other channel is on it's fourth podcast episode and I feel like I am already running out of material. Guess I need relevant topics. Keep up the good work man!
I've been in the industry and doing content creation for years so that certainly helps. I appreciate the support!
I just bought my 601 voucher 😭
Per CompTIA, "Vouchers for the SY0-601 version are still valid through July 31, 2024." So unless you are going to take an abnormally long amount of time to complete the exam, you should be fine.
i just bought mine + the sec+ guide by darril gibson. my goal is to pass it in 1 - 2 months @@JonGoodCyber
Totally doable...I also encourage you to check out the training and practice exams we have on Cyber Training Pro ( www.cybertrainingpro.com/p/comptia-security-bundle ).
jon good? yes he seems excellent to me
I'm glad that you are enjoying the content!
I was about to take my 601 in 3 weeks any suggestions? should I take 701 instead?
I recommend rewatching the video because I discuss which version to take and why, and the release date of the exam.
Wild that its changed already 😂
Why is that? They usually change about every 3 years with CompTIA.
🎉🎉🎉
Thank you for watching!
I wish CompTIA would quit this multiple guess crap and go with practical exams.
Security + is becoming irrelevant. Employers are not considering it any more
Security+ is becoming irrelevant for Cybersecurity?
