A lot of them are opposing the gaza war and want to live in peace with the Palestinians.
Hold it right there, they are fighting the real enemies to their country. No one should be forced into service which is the same reason the US ended the draft. It was agreed that someone should choose if they want to serve in the military. Drafting or forcing people into military service could go against the military's objective. It would strategically weaken a military's strength and effectiveness. The reason why the US has one of the strongest military in the world is because we allow men and women from all backgrounds who have chosen to serve. They chose to walk into that recruiting office, raise their right hand and swore an oath. They made that choice on their own, they were not forced into service, they chose to serve and for that fact, we should always honor those who serve and have served.

Dude we do the same thing in the U.S. and western countries like the UK. we import a bunch of people who don’t work any decent jobs or not at all, pay them huge subsidies, they have enormous families, and won’t serve their new host in any way. As for Gaza strip, aerial analysis shows that 16% of the buildings in Gaza are destroyed. Foreign Policy shows aerial images of Mosul before and after ISIS (another terrorist organization) was eliminated in Mosul, it looks more like 90% was destroyed. And mind you, ISIS did not have hundreds of tunnels underneath every building, 18 years of preparing for the war, and billions of dollars from UNWRA spent on the weapons instead of the well-being of the Gaza residents.

If the Ultra Orthodox wasn’t such a big chunk of Israel’s population, I could understand why they would be upset. At its core they are a religious group and joining the military is against their religion; however, their leadership actively pushed and supported the continuation and further expansion of this conflict (not the initial attack that sparked it mind you but the scale and longevity of it)
Plus they get substantial government assistance as well as subsidies. Israel laws are clear that, unlike in the USA, everyone is required to serve in the military and due to Israel’s small size excusing more than 1/10 of the capable population on top of everything else is maddening and is unfair to the other 9/10 of the population who is forced to shoulder additional burden despite their religious beliefs being just as fervent.
If they don’t want to take combat roles put in logistics, medical, or some other support area where combat is less likely. If they are worried about food then I’m sure the Israeli military could provide at least the basics , which could be kindly donated by ultra orthodox groups across the nation and if they fail to do so then the conscripted knows who they can talk to.
If they fear taking orders from their own armies then I’m certain Israeli law offers quite the rule book to handle that.
