Construction industry standard for precision variance is 0.25". At a distance of 30 feet Matterport Pro3 is 0.79" accuracy and Leica BLK360 is 0.16" accuracy. The choice is clear if you are going to be drawing architectural plans.
Interesting video, thanks. I use the Matterport Pro2 a lot and my Insta360 One X camera and the original BLK360 and the RTC360. As you said, they each have pros and cons. Interesting that Matterport just launched the Pro3 which appears to address most of these issues really well. Tips - scan from the middle outward in a spiral. That creates the best model. Never work around the outside. Also there are lots of things people want to see in the model later like pipes and valves. So having lots of Matterport scans is better for coverage but lack accuracy and so it drifts. For this space I would have done one BLK360 scan in the middle of each column grid and created an accurate overall model first and then filled in with the Mattereport which then would have found it’s location much faster and easier and more accurately.
Also remember that the equipment is actually a very small part of the real cost. It is a small fraction of what you will pay for everything else including your time. Which is why the Insta360 OneX is a great way to quickly fill in areas. I did a large two story hospital mechanical space with ONLY my Insta360 One X with the Matterport software and it turned out really good and didn’t take long.
you should try with an even older and cheaper 360 camera how it turns out, lol! Or just invest in the Insta360 1 inch 360 for the same speed or faster for a noticeably better quality :)
I actually have done a few scans with only my Insta360 OneX original. I did a large complex two storey mechanical room in a hospital and it went very fast and it turned out really well. I used it with the Matterport app. However there are no point to measure but it still works really well for tours and it all fits in my pocket. The original Insta360 OneX is the best because I also post to Google Street View. The new 360 cameras don’t allow GSV or they do t work with Matterport.
Who needs high density? U only produce tons of data and spend a lot of time at where u are measuring. We do the scaning only for floor plans and the calculation of the space. We are totally happy with low density.
I dont know about the prices in the us but for the leica blk u need the leica register software which coasts 2000 Euro per year. When u use the matterport and u want to produce for example an e57 file u need to pay for each project.
Density is not a distance it can cover. It is actually in the name.. meaning is how dense your point cloud should be. Simply from physics it is achieved by rotating a scanner slower->faster going from high density to low.
If Matterport had a Forever Professional subscription for let's say €250 option I would buy a used Pro2 definitely. Around 50 per month is ridiculous, not only do I buy your shit but I have to pay extra, seriously Matterport?
Yeah it’s a tough choice, but there is no alternative for hosting their processes models. After using it now since 2015 I believe it’s still indispensable for my business but it’s hard to get started for sure at the price point…
HI. They offered me a used BLK360 G1. I saw your video. Have you had any alignment problems? or is it a desperate mission (🥲🥲🥲) in synergy with PRO3 (of which I am a happy owner) and Matterport's CAPTURE APP? Thanks for your suggestions.
Hi! Who is they? And what are you using it for? The Pro3 would have been almost as good as the BLK G1 if I had used it in this space, but if you need more accurate data the BLK is better. I only tested it, so can’t comment on alignment but never had an issue. I had tons of issues yesterday with a symmetrical space and the Pro3 though!!!
Very interesting video. It's really cool that they work together so well in tackling a large industrial space!

Thanks for the comment I’m sure others will find that very useful!

Great perspective, yes the time is always the most valuable, no doubt!

How reliable were your measurements, could you charge a client for these ?
Very exciting. I always find your commentary on all things Matterport helpful.
Thanks Dan! Your support & positive energy is always appreciated
The price and speed and point cloud results form the new Matterport Pro3 blows these both away.

That's good to know that low density is fine for your use-case, thanks for the tip!

I think the pricing is the same in the US, we just pay for Matterport showcase and have to pay to export e57

Thanks for the explanation lots of new learnings!
Such a great comparison video!! What tripod are you using for the Leica? Much taller and sturdier looking than the one that came with mine!
I think it’s a Benro! We borrowed it for the shoot but I’ll ask!
Isn't a big difference between these cameras is the location accuracy?

you only need on camera not both.
Leica way better
Why are they wearing masks when they are alone in an empty warehouse?
This was shot deep in the pandemic in Oakland and the landlord required masking (it’s from a while ago)
