Welcome to our guide to the crafts of Setesdal, Norway! Today, we meet up with Karin Bøe again to find out more about the weaving traditions of Setesdal. Karin has a master’s degree in weaving and shows us the stunning fabrics that she creates and which are used to make the traditional shawls and belts worn together with the folk costumes from Setesdal.

You've won my heart. Knitting, Norway, yard work, cooking, and you drive a VW Bug. My 100% Norwegian mother, who is an American citizen, had a convertible Bug. It would drive up the mountain passes to the local ski area without a problem. She took my great grandfather Erickson, who was born in Norway, skiing when he was 70ish. They all would take something for the pot over a fire and then spend time grooming the ski runs with their ski's. I learned to ski in the same place. I'm left-handed, so I had great troubles learning to knit when I was a child. I'm now 64 and am going to take it up again. My mother took up carding and spinning her own yarn in her 50's and learned to weave. This lovely lady is amazing. She became very sick with cancer but survived. It left her unable to continue but she so inspired me. She passes in 2022 but she said she was happy. We have so many of her knitted works. Blessings to you.

While I appreciate all the fiber arts in this series, I enjoy most the cultural differences and variations from language to textiles to mores, to sentiments about the common good. I think this is my favorite episode. I was a weaver and loved the rhythm of it. It broke my heart when I could no longer do this. This brought back many bittersweet memories.

Thank you again for another wonderful video. The pieces Karin wove are beautiful and I loved hearing the significance of each piece. I taught weaving to blind and visually impaired for many years. The most difficult part of weaving is setting up the loom but once you do it you will never forget how. Then the fun begins... creating the shawl or whatever you are making. Arne was doing a good job and will continue do so once he sets up his loom at home. Takk!

What an enjoyable and charming episode! My second host mother in Norway, who lived on the family’s rose farm in Nes på Hedmark (on Lake Mjøsa) had a large weaving loom like Karin’s. She taught me how to use it and when I was there on a school break in the Spring, I wove a one-meter-long teppe which I still have. I gave it to my mother when I returned home after a year in Norway. It is such a treasure. I’m now 57 and I still remember that magical time when I was 18. I would love to learn to weave again. Thank you for going to visit Karin at her house and learning so much from her. She, like the two of you, is a national treasure. Ha det bra.

Every episode is epic including this one. I was a weaver until I lost the use of my right arm and eventually passed on my looms and spinning wheels. I was both thrilled and saddened at this visit with Karin. What beautiful fabrics and items she is creating. I encourage you in all your endeavors to knit and embroider and dye, e.t.c. One never knows what might befall one's life and the opportunities are gone forever. Thank goodness I can knit and embroider still and these videos are so inspirational. Also, I keep forgetting to thank you both for avoiding using what seems to be a very trendy, and bad, habit of using acronyms for anything and everything. So refreshing to hear someone actually say “work in progress” and not WIP (pronounced like whip). I have had to make a list of acronyms used on TH-cam, and especially on FlossTube, because I don’t know what hosts are referring to so often. So thank you, thank you, thank you for speaking so clearly all the time. My favorite channels are you two and Kate Jackson. You have taught me so much.
This has been such a wonderful series! I've been a knitter, spinner, weaver, and dyer for many years and have always admired the Scandinavian designs. Your guests have been charming as well as very informative. So nice to see these skills are valued and still being taught in Norway. I've enjoyed hearing the Norwegian language being spoken on many of the episodes. Carlos, your translations have been exceptional. I am a weaver as well as a knitter, wet felter and needle felter. (I make Sami bracelets as well to rediscover my heritage). Because I am a single parent of 2 children and had a very full time job, I wasn't able to continue with weaving until after I retired 7 years ago. I took 2 years of classes to relearn my skill and then purchased a small loom to fit into my very small house. I so loved Karin's room set up, it looks like a wonderful weavers studio. I hope to emulate it in the near future with an additional floor loom and possibly a table loom. I have an inkle loom which i could use to make braids. I also have cards for weaving and a rigid heddle back strap loom, but they are so much more difficult to weave on than a floor or table loom. This has been a wonderful episode learning about this incredible pattern and colors for the Setesdal area. Thank you again and again.
