Month 2 Drum Highlights: - I bought an electronic drum kit - I practice an hour a day and document everything - I bought annual subscriptions to Drumeo and Drum Beats Online Academy - I take 30 min weekly drum lessons at Guitar Center
Hi there! Good for you Devan! I teach a 63 year old retiree who wanted to learn how to play the drums as part of his bucket list. You’re never too old to learn, please don’t let anyone tell you different. Thanks for your great video, subscribed!
I'm a little over 1 year into learning. Some months I don't get much practice time due to my employment tho. I recently started keeping a journal of what I'm practicing (you're absolutely right about that). It's really helped me stay motivated because I see the results by looking at back at what I wrote. This year on Black Friday I bought Drumeo. I was using TH-cam before that and I feel the same way. I was all over the place. I still kinda am but that's ok. I've been threw ups and downs while learning. Some days I absolutely love it and some days I feel like it's not worth it. I have to remind myself JUST HAVE FUN! I'm in my 40's and I'm just doing this for the fun of it. Plus, I think it's really good for our minds. This might sound silly but one day I was really locked into my practice session and I had a headache after that lol. Apparently I was working the ole noggin to hard 😂. Good luck to you!
How have you been liking Drumeo so far? I focus mainly on the Method so I don’t get all scattered brain on the app lol I agree with drumming being really good for our minds especially because of the independence. I hope the headache didn’t last too long lol but it’s a great feeling in the moment being in flow. I can easily lose track of time practicing.
@DevanDaDrummer I've been taking it slow with Drumeo but so far I like it. I'm really trying to master certain things before moving on. I was so excited to learn how to play I missed the important things. Like timing. My timing needs work.
This is awesome, you’re an inspiration to me! I wish I took this more seriously and documented stuff like you! Regarding tips, I would recommend that any beginner should try to focus on proper posture/developing good habits/technique early on. Accuracy and efficiency over speed pretty much. I neglected technique/posture and played with too much tension/hit too hard. Ended up with tendon issues and pain when I play. So yeah, just making sure we relax more and all that. Habits are hard to unlearn. I’m still working on relearning this lol. Just don’t want anyone to make the same mistakes I did. I read this book called Anatomy of Drumming by John Lamb. It’s not really an instruction manual. It talks mainly about how the human body works, and the goal is that we better understand how everything works so we can find what playing styles work best for us and we understand what body parts are used as we drum, this helps avoid excess tension and wasting energy. It does have some tips though. So I’d recommend that for anyone interested in that sort of thing. Or just find free youtube videos that explain all aspects of drumming and grip and whatnot for free! Anyways, your passion for drumming inspires me to keep trying, so thanks for sharing this! God bless you!
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this all out! I’m starting to feel it a bit so I’m going to spend a lot of time working out the proper posture that I should have. I practiced more intensely last night and I woke up with what feels like a pinched nerve in my right shoulder blade. I’ve done some light stretching and cold/heat therapy and it feels better. I’m going to work more on my feet this weekend to give my arms a rest. I’ve always been terrible about relaxing my body so this is something that I am working on. I’ve been taking notes on when my body starts to feel tense and at what speeds (usually faster). I’ve been starting out slow around 60 bpm on average and then gradually working my way up.
thank YOU for reading it haha. Yeah, I find it hard to relax as well! I hope that everything goes very well for you and that the pain goes away. Sounds like a good plan of action!🥁 :)
@@DevanDaDrummer I can kinda hold it together at 50 bpm but not very long. I either lose count in my head or my hands just can't keep up anymore. I'll probably start working on stick control like doubles, paradiddles and stuff like that. I have yet to do that. Oops haha
I like both subscriptions, but I prefer Drumeo over Drum Beats Online Academy. Besides having a lot more content in Drumeo, it’s also more convenient to practice in. In DBO Academy, there’s a practice video you can follow along with Gabe from the exercise in the learning video. It’s usually at the slower bpm from the learning video which is great. The drawback is that there is usually only one exercise per video (at least so far) and played at one bpm. If I wanted to play the exercise slower or faster, I would have to use my own timer and metronome. In Drumeo, there are multiple exercises in one learning video. Underneath the video you can click on each exercise. From there you can play along with the drum audio and practice at any bpm. The really cool thing is that if you play at the default bpm for the full duration of time, you would have practice that exercise 100 times!
@@DevanDaDrummer oh okk nice, cause like way too often I see ppl that are good at playing songs, even hard songs, but they don’t have technique so the sound is flat and probably non musicians can’t tell the difference but yeah it’s still important. ❤️
@@ariannaver4245 honestly learning songs isn’t my priority right now. I love jamming out to songs but majority of my practice time is on learning the technical stuff.

Thanks for the encouragement!! That’s so cool that they are learning the drums. I hope that they are having fun 😄
Great going so far! You learned much faster than I did. Here I am, four years in, and I don't even feel that experienced 😅
@@thegreatpapyrus1518I’m sure that you’re a good drummer!! 😄
You rock!!! Feeling the progress is so powerful!

@@WyattTaylorDrums nice!! Part of my wishes that I started that young but better late than never
Stopping by again to see how it's going?
Thanks for stopping by! It has been going great 😄
@DevanDaDrummer I started working on 32nd notes. I'm getting better but there's no way I can play at a decent speed right now.
Ooof 32nd notes are tough. I should probably practice those more 😅 what bpm are you currently playing at?
