    Yes absolutely spot on. The first reason given here is the main reason I was early extending. Hips already moving closer even by the top of the backswing and I didn't even realise until I filmed my swing. I think a lot of people with my problem think that their hips are only moving closer to the ball in the downswing.

    Excellent explanation. Thanks.

    Couldn't agree more. It does take time to fix a fault and slow repetition is best. Think of it like learning to drive a car, especially a manual shift. You started off extremely slow, in a large parking lot with not other cars around. You slowly got better, then you moved to the street, got comfortable with this and then went to the expressway. Now, we all drive without really thinking about it, it's now second nature and the same can happen to our golf swings as we get rid of early extensions and play better golf. Cheers, and thanks for sharing.

      Learning to drive is a great analogy, especially for us who learnt in countries who still mainly drive manual cars

    I've been working with Jonathan on this very thing for about a month now and am seeing results. I've been trying to fix my early extension for five years making very little progress prior. Most of my practice revolves around slow motion swings, freezers, exaggeration, and full swings with no ball. It's still not ingrained into my natural (no swing thoughts) swing yet, but it will be soon

    Thank you for your videos, I have seen almost all your videos and they help me a lot! I also bought on Skillest your video the ultimate guide to rotation and I am very satisfied with it. I have a question that intrigues me: Why do you hardly ever talk about what the left arm does in the impact zone and at the follow through? Thanks

    I struggle with this and really appreciate your input. My arms do lift a bit up as you explained. I’ll work on getting more depth with the arms and getting the right hip back deeper. What about 1/2 or 3/4 back swings for shorter shots? Won’t that cause the arms and right hip to not go deep and then cause early extension?

    Chair drill: pushing hips back causes shaft to steepen. How do I avoid that while doing this drill?

    Just to manage expectations, when you say it takes time what does that mean in terms of practice sessions and number of balls?

    I don't disagree with the analyses but I see the #1 reason for early extension (and mine was really bad) as the trail side not descending properly. To see how it needs to descend, look at 5:26, then 5:29. If your trail side doesn't descend like that, problem. The question is how do you get it to descend like that. For me, all of the exercises suggested have not had consistent results. I have to concentrate specifically on my trail side. At 5:29, it really feels like a crunch (a lot of muscle getting squeezed into a much smaller space than at 5:26). My body rotation simply used to stop before reaching that point at 5:29. I have been working on getting to 5:29 and continuing body rotation until I'm at a full finish with the trail shoulder pointing to the target and I'm getting a better percentage of nice swings. Getting through the 'crunch' area is quite a challenge - you'll realize that because of the effort and discomfort it takes at first like at the beginning of a weight lifting program. Thanks for your videos.

    I did lessons with jchown for two months in summer '22 and he did cure my early extension. My handicap dropped from an 11 to a 7. However, like he said, it does take time for it to go away. You have to first fix the cause(s) of the EE, and then work on getting the EE to go away. It took me several months, and I was practicing daily by hitting into a net while watching video of my swing. In hindsight, I should've worked on it during the offseason.

    How about releasing the club early, instead of hitting the ground you have to stand up to hit the ball and lengthen the arm. Right wrist stays cocked until right thigh. Lots of slow-mo repeating.

    I have been trying to figure out what my problem is... And I believe this is it! Early extension is killing my swing!

      As soon as I try to add "lots of power" to my swing, old habits come back... This is something I need to break! Mind over matter!!!

    I’ve been doing the chair drill for months and it’s demoralising. Swing path changed to outside in, still fat and thin, lost 10m+ of distance. I just can’t get this drill to work for me

    • @jchowngolf
      @jchowngolf  ปีที่แล้ว

      The chair drill or any early extension visual targeting drill is just one step. You need to find out why you’re early extending first, if you don’t fix the root cause or work on it whilst you’re doing the chair drill, you will get worse

    • @prycealderson9352
      @prycealderson9352 ปีที่แล้ว

      This chair drill will cause shaft to steepen. Which will result in an out to in swing path. Need to address steep shaft while keeping pelvis back.
