It's so relatable going back seeing new buddies experiencing the same thing that every buddy did during debut. Sinb looked like a leader but apparently she was the maknae line. Its crazy , man take me back to them. I miss them so much
OMG Gfriend! One of my favorite groups ever. Their backstory was pretty amazing. They came from a small unknown company, debuted during a time where this fresh innocent schoolgirl look was everywhere, and their early mvs and outfits were clearly pretty low budget. But what set them apart was they were not only vocally strong (especially with Yuju and her "diva" voice) but they were known for their powerful synchronized dances, which wasn't very heard of in 2015 in girl groups. And you weren't wrong about the "Into the New world" comparison and pointing out SinB kinda resembled Jessica Jung. That was a thing people pointed out during their debut and they did get some hate for supposedly "copying" SNSD. For a debut from an unknown company, their debut was decent but they didn't blow up until after a viral fancam of them performing Me Gustas Tu on a slippery stage and the girls fell/slipped mulitple times but got right back up and kept performing. Then they came back with "Rough" and that song blew up and not only gave them their first win but its the song that gave them the most wins (15 music shows) and that i believe is still the 2nd most wins on a girl group song).
Reading these (although i already know these) things makes me feel proud as a buddy! I miss them 🫶🏽

As you like Into the New World so much you should watch the iconic special stage GFriend did with Twice, Red Velvet and IOI where they performed that song together and they all formed a guard of honour for Yuju to down through to deliver the key high note climax of the song. It is iconic.
Gfriend debuted at age around of 19-16. 1995 is the oldest which Sowon (their leader) is around 19 years old and Sinb & Umji (the maknaes) is at their 16. Tho Sinb looks matured for her age but she's still a maknae 😅
The comment that SinB kind of looks like Jessica reminds me of the discourse where people who didn't know Krystal but heard Jessica's sister was an idol and thought SinB was Jessica's idol sister.

Glass Bead definitely got compared to ITNW a lot. It didn’t help that people commented how SinB’s debut photos looked nearly identical to Jessica Jung.
Their fandom name Buddy is because GFRIEND consider their fans their friends or “Buddies”. They even have a song for them called Flower Bud.
MGT is the song that got them traction thanks to their viral performance of performing in the rain through falls and injuries (it’s a tough performance to watch)
Rough is definitely one of their more, if not, most iconic song. It got them 14 wins and paved the way for their success despite being from a small unknown company.

One thing I want to mention, it's that now GFRIEND is like a real family since their bonds is still very strong. They started as a girl group to evolve from close friends, to sisters, to a real second family to them. Even now and in the present they call, see, meet each other's very often like a real family, they love each other's and always support each other's no matter what the other do like a real family. That is something that for us Buddies is precious to see too.
Glad you enjoyed them, Gfriend was so big and iconic, they were up there with twice, wjsn and other big girlgroups, it’s so sad they disbanded.
About Glass Bead, you’re not wrong when you say it reminds you of ITNW by Girls Generation, that’s exactly what everyone thought at the time they debuted and unfortunately they did get some hate for that, people said they were trying to copy SNSD and would never be like them, you know, the usual stuff when you get compared to your olders peers, but they proved themselves eventually and became loved by everyone!

Glass bead looks like ITNW because the group was created by an ex-SM Entertainment manager who also worked in the production of SNSD and other SM groups. And SNSD was often used as a model for new girlgroups in their first single. The same thing happened with I.O.I for example with their debut music video Dream Girls that also has elements from ITNW.
Don't worry about the SNSD vibes comparison. Everyone noticed that since day 1 and numerous talk shows has mentioned it a lot of times including Sinb being a Jessica look a like. Even GFriend themselves told SNSD Sunny on a show that people are saying that their group reminds them a lot of SNSD.

Many Buddys have already fed you with insight about Gfriend. 9 years ago today, Gfriend released their debut EP 'Season of Glass' with the title track 'Glass Bead' ❤️
5 members were still at school when Glass Bead was released. Yerin attended her graduation a week later and sat between HaYoung (APink) and Joy (Red Velvet) on the front row. You can see them both singing a bit of Glass Bead to Yerin in the middle who is giggling. They remain lifelong friends to this very day and always support each other on their comebacks still. The 3 friends did a special stage together on a music show which is an iconic moment.
Yes GFriend got a lot of hate from rival fandoms from the beginning, something which continued throughout their careers. VIVIZ even featured that unpleasant aspect of the industry in their earlier comeback this year Pull Up which told haters to shut up as they are kinda busy right now and have no time to listen to their lies.
It started by hating SinB because she looked so much like Jessica as if that was her fault for being born like that. The comparisons you made with SNSD were commonly used to say they were just copycats because they had the same fresh innocence and nostalgic sound as them as well as them both being great vocalists and dancers. So you did well seeing that similarity on your first viewing of the video.
It summarises the attitudes and personalities of the girls that they took the criticism in their stride and tried to turn it into a positive, saying that were flattered that anyone thought they were like such an iconic group. But deep down it must have hurt privately that their incredible hard work was being devalued by many. They actually practiced Glass Bead for 7 months before the company, which was bankrupt, thought they were ready to debut. To make it into the To10 with their debut, when both they and their company were totally unknown with zero company stans as they were the only group they had, is a remarkable achievement.
The oldest was Sowon the tall and beautiful leader and a mom to the girls like her children (naughty!) who frequently had to be kept in check. Yerin was 18 with the cutest possible eye smile. Eunha and Yuju were both 17 at debut and graduated together, our lead and main vocalist respectively, and SinB and Umji were just 16 at debut. SinB was main dancer who became their dance trainer early on in their career as the company couldn’t afford to hire one for long, so she learned the entire routine really quickly and then taught it to the rest of the members after the choreographer had gone. Umji was walking home from school when the CEO spotted her and asked to come to an audition. She debuted just a few months later with virtually no training.
When the remaining three members competed in Queendom They chose the songs "time for the moon night" and "rough" and it made me cry thinking of everyone in the group. I want them to come back one more time.😢
The girls of Gfriend was like 18 when they debuted. You did recognize Eunha fast. The girl you said was gorgous at 03:53 is Sinb. You also recognized Umji fast, they hated on her more on Rough comeback because she wasnt so skinny like the other kpop idols. Umji was 16 when she debuted. The girl you said had a good voice and leader vibes was Sinb. The girl you liked because of deeper voice was leader and main rapper Sowon. The girl at 09:30 you said kinda look like Jessica Jung id Sinb, and she became really popular in the beginning becaushe she was known as Jessica look alike. Gfriend became really popular after a fancam became viral of the girle in the rain performong Mr gustas tu and even though they fell alot and hurt themselves they didnt stopped performing, just like they said in their lyrics from Glass Bead. Sowon is really tall and working as a model now for the moment. The one you said have a very full voice is Yuju, one of the best singers of kpop. She does have covers of Mariah Carey and she loves Destiny Childs, so I think she inspired herself in them with her diva voice. The one with the high notes is really the main vocal. The one you said looked so beautiful and more tan is Sowon, leader and modeling at the moment. They actually became more known and viral after Me gustas tu. Rough was the song they really became popular and win all music shows on first place, like 16 trophies in this comeback and was first place everywhere. Gfriend was known for their powerful vocals and choreos. The lyrics of rough is really meaningfull because it talks about them loving someone that they cant be together at the moment but one day they will be together again, thats why they perform this in Queendom ans everybody cried. Because the girls didnt know they would disband and they wanted to stay together, they won the lawsuit to get Gfriends name and they promise Buddy that they will reunite again. This first three comeback were known as the school trilogy, now with the Next comeback, Navillera, they start to havr other concepts and Eunha will cut her hair in her iconic hairstyle, you gonna recognize her, she became popular with this style. Would be fun to watch your reaction of their comebacks until Mago, they really did matured, even more after their company joines Hybe, than they really changed concept. Their japanese songs are one of the best, I would love of you react to them too. I think you gonna love it. The order of Mvs was right, you still didnt reacted to Time for the moonnight, but they performed a mix of Rough and Time for the moonnight in Queendom, thats why maybe you know it a little

Me Gustas Tu was their breakthrough song, not for a good reason. There was a fancam from an event where they were performing in the rain and they kept on slipping and falling through the whole performance. People were amazed by how professional they were to keep doing the song even though they could hurt themselves (which they shouldn't, but we know how the music industry in South Korea is). That garnered some attention and a lot of fans to the group and then Rough (their next comeback) got first place on fifteen music shows which, to this day, is the song with the most music show wins by a girl group after Apink's LUV. Rough also won best dance performance on MAMA 2016 which cemented them as one of the biggest 3rd gen girl groups ❤
For the members: The one you mentioned looking like Jessica is SinB, I don't remember if you ended up drawing that connection. The one you pointed out as really tall and really pretty is Sowon, she is the leader of the group and she was one of the tallest girl group members in Kpop. Actually Gfriend as a group is surprisingly tall, they were at one point the tallest active girl group in the industry (I believe Weeekly surpassed them). There is a picture of Gfriend standing next to Mamamoo (who is one of she shortest girl groups) and its one of my Kpop photos. Anyways, Sowon is currently promoting as an actress. The girls have mentioned that they still see her as their leader even though the group isn't active at the moment.
The girl with the really belt-y "diva voice" is Yuju and she is the main vocalist of the group. Her vocals were INSANE and it always blew people away, especially in their early days. Though I think all that belting, hitting the high notes, and constant busy schedule Gfriend had, took a toll on her. There was a time around 2017/18 where Yuju disappeared from Gfriend activities for some time (which the company never really addressed why). Some believe she was having some confidence issues about her singing, some said she damaged her vocal cords and either had surgery or was resting it. Either way, she did eventually come back and continued performing with the group. In later half of Gfriend's career, she did seem to step back from doing all the crazy high notes and belts and Eunha started taking some of them. As of now, Yuju is promoting as a solo artist and has a few solo releases and OSTs. Even though she doesn't do that crazy high pitch belt that she did in the early Gfriend days, I think it's given her an outlet to showcase her lower register and power in her voice.
Yerin is the last girl that's not in VIVIZ, she was the Gfriend member that appeared on the most variety shows on behalf of the group. She's also currently promoting as a solo artist.
As of now, though the members are doing their own thing, they are still close with each other and you see them get together from time to time and constantly promoting each other's work on social media. Recently all the members did participate in VIVIZ's Maniac dance challenge. The members have mentioned several times that they do hope to reunite as a group one day.

I love Gfriend, they have some great music. They were known for their knife like choreo, one of the most synchronized groups out there. Mu Gustas Tu was an iconic song, especially the one live performance of them performing in the rain and huge moths. Rough was their first win and they ended up having the most girl groups wins on a song at that time with it. A funny thing is Gfriend does a CF with BTS for school uniforms. during the release season of Glass Bead; SinB was going viral for looking like SNSD Jessica Jung's sister or twin. It became talks and had been part of questions to introduce SinB and the GFriend as a group. It may be a little awkward, but that was part of how they got known by the public. And yes, that Kick that's similar to SNSD's Into the New World also took part in online chatter being identified as part of GFriend's publicity.

Me Gustas Tu spent one year in the Top 100 and became the first ever Kpop video for a girl group to get more than 100 million views but sadly they were all lost later when a contractual dispute with the channel holding the video with all those views decided to delete the video. It is the unofficial national anthem of South Korea played even by military bands at state occasions.

Yes, their name is "girlfriend" in Korea. A bit weird, but if there was a space in the middle it would make a lot of sense as their concept was "girl next door", so they could be your female friend.
The 3 other members are:
- Sowon. Yes, the same name as the fandom of SNSD. It means "wish". She is the tall one with legs for days. With 1m73 she's even 1cm taller than Sooyung. She's also the leader.
- Yuju. THE main vocal. She's now solo and I think you'll like her songs. At least you'll love her vocals. She is also very good at poledancing, running fast, halli galli, etc.
- Yerin. The clown who is really good at acting cute. She's also solo now. Check her out.
G-Friend was also famous for their incredible synchronicity in their dancing. They were the reason Weekly Idol started doing 2x speed dances, which they aced every time. They even did a choreo blindfolded! And if you think about how much taller Sowon is, it's even more impressive. Definitely check out some of their dance practices!

I can hear the SNSD parallels, but I think that especially in later comebacks they had some major melancholic energy SNSD never tapped into, as far as I can tell.
Yupp, what set gfriend apart from other ggs is their passionate melancholy concept with an orchestral-pop genre. It's unique and different from the usual kpop sound, like rough, tftmn, summer rain, sunrise, such masterpieces.

Yes got so many issues before; Glass bead sounds like ITNW, Sinb really looks like Jessica, yerins childish cry, poor company/cheap outfits, umjis visual but hell yeah, they did great!!! My first time seeing is Me gustas tu. This song made me a buddy because of their professionalism. If you can watch their me gustas tu falling performance in rain, youll know why.

I remember when glass bead teaser came out a lot of people did compare it to into the new world and yes there was a lot of hate but I think for gfriend that was good. Because they were from an unknown, poor company that got people talking about them and tuning in when the mv actually dropped and by that time I remember a lot of ppl where already saying stuff like "I guess it's a bit similar but..." or "well now that I see the whole thing it's not THAT similar" hhh The hate was also how I discovered gfriend back then bc I loved snsd so of course I was curious and I immediately fell in love so I'm thankful for the hating kpop stans who made the similarity a big deal lmao
