An important thing to keep in mind when you watch their choreo is that Gfriend came out in a time when girl group choreo was mostly "stand in a line and do the moves". I think without that context it's probably hard to grasp just how absolutely groundbreaking they were in that aspect.

@@roguereacts yeah they marked a shift in the industry by proving complex choreos weren't just for the boys. You can see the impact in Twice for example(since you're definitely more than familiar with their catalogue at this point). In a couple years you went from simple choreo like Cheer Up to Dance The Night Away because the whole industry saw what Gfriend were doing and knew they had to step it up.
Rough is in the top 10 list of all time kpop songs with the most music show wins.
You are wrong. Rough shares 7th-8th place with song Energetic from Wanna One in the top list of all time kpop songs. And 2nd place among female group.

Rough and Navillera broke Kpop when they were released. Rough not only gave them their first win but also achieved the first ever perfect All Kill in Kpop for a girl group being number 1 on every chart simultaneously and winning a near record 15 trophies on music shows, winning them the much coveted Triple Crown. Navillera also was a huge success also winning 14 trophies, giving them a record 29 wins in the year with just 2 songs. In the video SinB (VIVIZ) is polishing and playing bowling with 14 trophies which seems like a prediction of how well this song would do.
Yes it was snow in the Rough video as the song was from the album Snowflake.
I would also recommend their 'blind' dance prictices, because its so much fun and they nailed every single one of them.

When Twice covered Me Gustas Tu on a TV special stage, GFriend then covered Ooh Ahh dressed as cheerleaders. The concept for the show was that the 2 biggest girl groups in Korea who were still rookies at the time, would cover each other’s most iconic song. Both did great and added their own flavour to their version of the cover. You might like to react to GFriend’s cover as well now as it is fun to watch.

I really like the fact that you're constantly pointing the guitar out. I remember there was a time when people had been calling Dreamcatcher "Gfriend's dark side" exactly because both groups (somewhat) heavily relied on electric guitar in their music.

Gfriend initial concept is known as "Powerful Innocent". The group is well known for their amazing vocals, knife-like choreography and ofc the synchronization. Because their music is mostly filled with strings or violins, Gfriend's music genre is usually called "Orchestral pop". Another iconic sound by gfriend is their "passionate melancholy" theme which is my favorite sound from them (Rough, Summer rain, Time for the moon night, Sunrise, Crossroads).
Oh yeah, gfriend's Japanese tracks are also amazing! Top tier discography.

oh, yay, another favorite group of mine. The vocalist you kept pointing out was Yuju, she's my bias, and her debut solo album (titled REC.) is one of my favorite albums that came out last year (probably one of my favorite albums ever honestly). fun fact Sinb from Gfriend is really good friends with Eunseo from WJSN, so fun connection there. Less fun fact, their disbandment was one of the most emotionally devastating disbandment announcements for me.💕

I think almost every buddy is an inSomnia and vice versa, cus they both use a lot of orchestral rock sounds, unique instrumentals and they both have crazy choreo.
For they b-sides I will say we have:
- cute ones being White, Love bug, Gone with the wind, One
- soft ones, like Better me, Trust, Crème Brulee, Falling sleep again and, of course, Dreamcatcher.
- hard hitting/epic movie/drama ost sound, like Labyrinth, Memoria, Eye of the storm, Here we are.
Gfriend has a complex MV lore. Their MVs are all (except summer bops) connected and if u r just a casual listener, they look pretty, cool or intense, but if u r into those storylines... them u r up to a nice trip.
Hope u like them, I was a kpop fan since BoA (1gen) but when 3gen came I was kinda not that into kpop... I saw Gfriend's debut stage on my yt recommendations and something made me very intrigued since there was a girl (Sinb) who looked a lot like Jessica from SNSD, they were all very clean, fresh, natural styled so I decided to see (since I missed those times in kpop) what they were about and I ended up being a buddy with all my heart. They worked so so SO them hard since day 1 that breaks my heart every time I think about what happened. Gfriend, Seventeen and Dreamcatcher brought me back to kpop.
For the b-sides, don't forget to include 'Rainbow' as well :D the song has beautiful melody with ofc amazing guitar in it
@@mimbo15116 Oh, I agree so much! Don't get me wrong, basically love all Gfriend songs and Rainbow is indeed an amazing song, so seeing someone who likes it too makes me happy! A perfect romance/action anime opening with stunning vocals and melody indeed. The ones I recommended were not even all my favorites, I just choose the ones I thought ppl in general liked the most.

I subscribed for your Dreamcatcher Deep Dive, but I was a Buddy before I was ever an InSomnia so I couldn't be happier you're doing this Deep Dive.
The Main Vocalist is the one whose voice you said you liked so much, her name is Yuju (real name Choi Yuna) and she is one of the top vocalists of the 3rd generation, together with Siyeon and Red Velvet's Wendy. She is a Soloist now and has released 2 mini albums so far.
The rest of the Members consist of:
Sowon (real name Kim Sojung), the leader, visual and tallest member of the group. She is considered a leader figure by Viviz although she is not in the group. She is now an actress.
Eunha (real name Jung Eunbi), the lead vocalist and official cute & shortest member. She is now a member of Viviz.
SinB (real name Hwang Eunbi.. yes there are 2 Eunbis in Gfriend), the Main Dancer, Tsundere and possibly my bias. She is now a member of Viviz.
Umji (real name Kim Yewon), the maknae of the group and used to be called the ugliest kpop idol, but she has since gone through a glow-up. She is now a member of Viviz.
Yerin (real name Jung Yerin), an all-rounder and energizer bunny of the group. She is a soloist/actress/host (did I mention she's an all rounder?) and will be releasing her second Mini Album Today!!!! (Hint)

Gfriend's Korean name is "Yeoja Chingu" which literally means girl friend. Their fandom name is called 'Buddy'. Thankyou for the reaction! If u want to check out their dance practice, make sure to include the Love Whisper dance practice (their most difficult choreo) and Mago dance practice (eye mask ver) :)
I first discovered Kpop through GFriend and I fell in love with them completely and utterly. I loved everything about them. Their music was so enjoyable to listen to, the synchronisation in their dancing was so perfect it felt telepathic and they had the ability to always leave me with a smile on my face whenever I watched them.
Only if you did a deep dive into their personalities would you be able to appreciate just how nice they all are as people too. No matter how successful they became, they remained humble and grateful for everything that happened to them and everyone behind the scenes who met them remarked on how nice they were. The fact that they single-handedly saved their bankrupt company and made them rich is testament to their hard work and dedication as well as their talent. The fact that Yuju begged a dentist to remove all her healthy wisdom teeth just so she could have some time off shows how hard they were being worked.
They are entertainment gold which is why they were invited onto Weekly Idol more than any other group despite only being around for half the time it ran. Being funny is natural for them without trying so you only need to lock them in a room for an hour with a camera and it is guaranteed hilarity and chaos.
They don’t have to act adorable for their videos because they just are naturally. SinB and Yerin had a special relationship with fans calling the ship SinRin. I loved seeing how SinB just let Yerin use her Bad Hands whenever they were together even though SinB hates being kissed. Haha 😂. Yuju had no such problem with Yerin though. The YeJu ship.
Eunha is the mental maknae as she was born cute and will still be when she is 60! She so desperately wants to be thought of as sexy but it hard to stop the cuteness getting in the way. Haha 😂.
So their music, personalities, rags to riches back story, synchronised dancing and sheer adorability meant I was dragged into a black hole I never want to come out of. They are still my daily Happy Pill that is better than any drug. I now support every member in their projects, having all the albums they release on my shelves. The quality of their B sides post breakup is still top tier. The 3 albums from VIVIZ and the 2 albums from Yuju are a joy to listen to. Yerin released album of the year for me with Aria and I am looking forward to her 2nd album due out in just a few hours.
Those soaring choruses, guitar breaks, and powerful vocals became some of their trademarks. GFRIEND started as a shoe-string budget group, and likely most of their budget was spent on getting two of the best producers in kpop, Iggy and Yongbae. So the song quality was there from the get go. I think maybe the whiteout filter stuff was a hail mary attempt to add some stylization into the MVs without any cost. In the Rough MV is makes sense though, since the song and MV is about looking back at the old days.
Dreamcatcher was called "dark GFRIEND" a lot. And GFRIEND carries those same rock and orchestral influences, but leans more towards the orchestral for sure. If you do a deep dive into them later, you'll find darker songs that could just as easily have been from Dreamcatcher in the bsides. Eye Of The Storm, Tarot Cards, Room Of Mirrors, Flower Garden etc etc. They also have a song called Dreamcatcher lol. Waiting for DC to release a song named GFRIEND! But GFRIEND started out more on the cutesy side, and transitioned into a more melancholic and adult song from Summer Rain onwards.
The girl you kept mentioning the vocals of is Yuju, their main vocal. She's currently a soloist under Konnect, with 2 albums out so far. She's one of the best voices in kpop, and turns out a really solid songwriter too! Yerin (the silly, gorgeous eyesmile one) has also gone solo, and has a new album in a few days. Last one, Sowon (tall model leader person) is currently an actress. They're all still fast friends, and have all been really vocal about GFRIEND not being over though, so that reunion is most likely happening eventually!
Will echo the requests to check out the dance practices. They have some stellar choreographies, and their synchronization is just crazy. They even have crazy blindfolded ones, and 2X speed ones. They also have some great covers and performances on shows like Pinic Live, Sketchbook and Immortal Songs.
I can totally see why Dreamcatcher was called the dark GFriend they have similarities in some of their sounds!
Just as BAND-MAID got me into J-rock, Gfriend (Rough) got me into K-pop and once I fell into that rabbit hole there was no getting out. In many polls, YUJU, the main vocalist usually falls somewhere in the top 5 or even top 3 of all-time greatest female K-pop vocalists. Like TWICE or DREAMCATCHER, Gfriend takes silliness and fun on a whole new level, once you get to know their personalities, you will know what I mean. Their dancing/choreography routines are among the best in the history of K-pop. I had only been into K-pop for a couple of years when they "disbanded" and it was devastating. Once a Buddy always a Buddy, and the hope is that someday they will reunite.

Oh god you got in to Gfriend, they debuted in 2015 glass bead which they practiced for a whole year to make it perfect and speaking of perfect so are their choreographies, they are the creators of the x2 dance where they put a song at double speed and have to dance it perfectly coordinated, and guess what, they achieve it even with their eyes closed.
The girl with the high notes is called Yuju (choi Yuna is being her real name) is spectacular as she sings and dances 14:12
My bias in the group is called SinB (Eunbi her real name) she is the main dancer. 11:22 she is the middle one
They are well known for their concept called "innocent" but as you could appreciate in their songs they create a very alternative sound reaching some rock, thanks to this they are also known as the other side of the coin of one of your (and my ;) ) favorite band Dreamcarcher for their rock touches in their songs and their well done and synchronized choreographies.
They have lore in their videos, so if one day you would like to see them in order I can make you a list, so just tell me and I'll make it for you.
They unfortunately did not renew their contract with their company and that created a big surprise in the Buddys (name of the fandom) since we did not see it coming, it was painful for them and for us but they are a big family and they are still very united no matter what they do.
-Sowon the leader of the group went to the acting side as did Yerin.
-Yuju started her solo career.
And last but not least Eunha, SinB and Umji are in a group called VIVIZ being a trio.

- High notes are almost always done by Yuju, the main vocalist, and one of my favorite vocalists in k-pop.
- The tall one is Sowon. She was the leader. I'm still amazed how she managed to be so in synch with the dancing of the others. Seriously. Just think about it: she's 173 cm (5’8″) while Eunha is 162.7 cm (5’4″). That's a HUGE difference. For her long limbs to reach the same angles and still be in synch is amazing. And not just be "a bit" in synch, no no no. G-Friend was famous for being THE MOST IN SYNCH group, and very well might still be to this day.
- The closest english pronunciation of Viviz in korean is probably: Vee Vee Gee
- The maknae is Umji (means "thumb"). A LOT of other female idols adored her.
- their concept was "innocence"
- will they wreck you later? I don't think so. Their style did change though through the years, became more mature, but I don't remember any that needs a warning.

These girls were the first group I loved. Slowly a group called ILY:1 is starting to fill the Gfriend shaped hole in my heart. And yes, you were right, 3 of the members (Sinb, Umji, Eunha) have formed a group called VIVIZ and when they performed some Gfriend songs on Queendom 2, I cried the manliest of tears.

I love so many of their songs but Rough just holds such a special place in my heart it always stayed my favorite of theirs. You must watch their 2x dances from Weekly Idol, the best. They also do a ballad version of Rough that is beautiful.

I am very excited to see your reactions to GFriend as there is no one else like them. Honestly you could pick 10 random B sides from them and you would have a great time as they have OFFICIALLY the best discography of any group in the history of Kpop, according to the poll conducted in 2021 before their contracts were terminated early by the company. They unbelievably scored more than double the votes for BTS who were in 2nd place which is crazy. But that is how good their B sides are, apart from their comeback songs.
The B side Bye is very emotional as it imagines them saying goodbye to Buddies for the last time and has an iconic guitar solo outro which destroyed me when performed live at their concert. After their break up the song has extra meaning now.
I looooved all the songs I've heard and can't wait to explore more of this discography! 💙

Once upon a time Dreamcatcher was known as the Dark GFriend. Also, one of the members of GFriend, SinB ,got notice initially due to her resemblance to SNSD's Jessica Jung.

So I've done Pull Up NOT realizing they were once part of GFRIEND lol you bet I'll be looking into them more now lol
Because your concern about their theme. Fingertip the next song after Navillera will confuse you but after that their concept changes will feel really natural. Also 5 out of the 6 still make Music. Viviz, Yuju Solo, Yerin Solo. The girls also want to release more music as 6 we don't know when tho, after their disbandment (which wasn't their choice btw) they wanted to grow on their own. Sowon wanted to act, Yerin wanted to do more entertainment stuff and also acting, she also realesed new songs and Yuju Solo stuff. Umji and SinB thought about redebuting as a group again and then asked Eunha to join. All of the members are still close with each others, they werent just group mates they are soulmates. They still meet up as a group every couple of months and do reunions.
Dance Practices I recommend: all of them that u reacted to, Time for the Moon Night, Love Whisper (their hardest Choreography, it was actually made from one of BTS Chorepgrapher), 2x Speed Dance Videos, Blindfolded Mago Version

The filter you kept referring too was on purpose due to these early MVs were done outdoors Source at the time the company was basically bankrupt,, these girl was the last attempt to stay in business so they couldn't afford studio filming. rough and Me Gusta Tu, were 2 MVs that were 1st for a GG to reach over 100million views, these 6 achieved a lot of 1st for GGs/ ON note , Eunha Sinb Umji are the 3 in BBG Yuju solo, Yerin solo, Sowon their leader has gone into acting, their sound is not the norm but it is very beautiful, and I was blessed to find them on their debut and have never found another like them some close yet just don't have the same twist in their music, buddy for life
Glad to see you do a deep dive on Gfriend. If you are into the music, in particular the instrumental, you will thoroughly enjoy your Gfriend journey. Their music style is popularly known as orchestral pop, where you will find very notable presence of string instruments, and of course that staple electric guitar :-) Dreamcatcher and Gfriend encountered early comparison and some claimed that Dreamcatcher is the darker version of Gfriend with more rock influence.
Gfriend's initial musical concept was based their school trilogy from their first three songs. Its fandom adoringly named it "Powerful Innocence" as the basis for their theme that took them to stardom.
Of course you wouldn't miss Yuju's vocal. Yuju really is the vocal phenom in the 3rd gen era. She brings tremendous power to her voice with a tone uniquely associated with her. She has began her solo career.

My first contact with kpop was back in 2011 when a dance game I played had some kpop songs, but I eventually stopped listening because I had more insterest in other songs (I'm more of a metal, hard rock and 80's/90's dance music fan).
Then, one day, while I was listening to some japanese and korean rock bands, Rough by GFRIEND was recommended to me by the TH-cam algorithm. I instantly loved it. The strings, the guitar solo in the bridge, everything was perfect.
So I started to search for more Gfriend videos and, on the recommendations of one of them, there was "Dreamcatcher - Scream", it caught my attention so I clicked.
Fast forward and Dreamcatcher is my ult group and Gfriend my second most loved group, all thanks to Rough.
To this day they are the only groups I truly ADORE in kpop, the technical quality of their music is unmatched in this industry, and in some way they are revolutionary and really important for kpop history (but they don't get enough credits).
My favorite Gfriend song is Rainbow, I hope you listen to it, it's simply magical.

I listened to GFriend a bit after debut but, I didn't get into them completely because I was following too many groups and I wasn't really into the initial cute theme. I enjoy it once in awhile but it's not my favorite. I did enjoy the songs though, really liked "Me Gustas Tu." I forgot about them for a few years and then I went back and they were so good. I love the later albums. B sides amazing. Also that filter is used in alot of Korean&Japanese dramas especially school romance themed ones.
It's almost fitting that Gfriend was picked during the Twice deep dive. There was actually a lot of friendship between the two groups. There are fanmade videos about "TwiceFriend". Gfriend was my first real bias group after Stellar disbanded, and I only got into Twice cause of how aggressively Sana pursued Eunha. They're sooooo cute together that there's entire compilations of just those two lol
Also Gfriend in general were so ridiculously influential that they made Twice start TTT by first starting Memoria themselves (same idea, extremely long weekly variety show when the pandemic first started).
When we get to the deep dive I'm 100% going to need to check out that variety show!!

I think that aside from 2NE1 and Girls' Generation, 2nd gen groups are getting overlooked because most kpop fans (and I assume most of your subscribers) are slightly younger so are more likely to vote for 3rd gen groups because they know them better.
But I'm basically a pensioner by kpop standards, I've been in the fandom for 13 years 😅

So in Korean VIVIZ is pronounced as 비비지 (bibiji) which is cute because Eunha and Sin B both share their real name: Eun"Bi" and the third member in Um"Ji" ^^
