    I couldn't remember why I was saving these pull tabs. I'm 63 and been saving them for years. This video looks wicked to make something like this. I called my younger sister and telling her about this. She told me her kids asked me to save them while t u ey were in grade school.😂😂 they are both grown and have children of their own now. 11lbs (176 ounces) of soda tabs lol I'm really proud of it. It remains one of my top achievements. Right up there with my half inch kusudama flower ball. 60 hand cut half inch square sheets of paper. One sheet per petal. Five petals per flower. 12 flowers Per ball. Roughly 20 hours of labor. And I made three of them. One day, I will achieve the nearly impossible quarter inch scale. It took me five hours to make one flower. Only 11 more to go. Trouble is, I haven't been able to figure out a way to create my tools that small. Lol I was using a needle and a razor blade to do the folding. But the needles are too big to use for clamps.

      that's pretty exciting dude! no pressure though. you've already covered it on your channel and it is a lot of work. if the purpose is armor, you can just skip the gouging. that way you can use any tab. i have a whole lot of tabs left over. ill get back to you when i get around to making big sheets for ya. :D save you some trouble. it would be really cool to get this concept out there no matter who tells the world. hopefully its already helped a few people out. that bad boy would not exist had i not come up with the modification.

    I do prefer historically accurate chain mail, but this looks good and can be good for cosplay. Maybe since it is weak aluminum, you could maybe use those flakes to make make-shift rivets and use pliers to squish the “rivets” so they keep the ends together. (Basically pop tab riveted mail)

    • @honestgashandmade5831
      @honestgashandmade5831  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      oh man! ill make a trenchcoat out of traditional chainmail one day. man that is gonna be heavy lol. hhmmmm. thats an interesting idea. im looking at a flake at the moment and it does seem to be long enough to wrap around the split. im not sure its entirely necessary though. the links stay together pretty well. especially if you store it flat. i only took it out 6-7 times and maintenance was minimal. the main thing is the sheer length of time it would add to an already 1.5 year project. ouch. i would probably do that for a traditional chainmail trench coat. totally worth it. ive been thinking of going into sewing my own trenchcoats. all i can ever find are cheep costumes and lame styles. its just a tad expensive. but i would definitely add chainmail in some way to my style

    I’ve been collecting soda tabs for a few years now with the intent to make chainmail. Unfortunately the majority of the tabs I’ve collected are the kind you said not to use for this method. But because the only problem is that they break in that middle point when you gouge them I realized that instead of clipping the regular suggested part I could just use the side that breaks easy as the opening and attach them together backwards. And because that point breaks so easily I don’t even need to use wire cutters, I can just use the same pliers that I’m already using to break the weak point.
    I’ve only made a small section so far but it seems like it’s working pretty well so it might be a good alternative for anyone who has tons of the wrong kind of soda tabs like me.

      EXCELLENT!! :D it was all worth it! lol better get on it man. i set up a portable soda tab preparation station to work on them any chance i could. something small and preferably with three compartments but not crucial.
      the ideal thing is to make it on a manikin. sew the top shoulder seams to the clothing you want to emulate and go top to bottom. where there is a seam on the coat, there is a seam on the mail.
      to taper like the back of my trench coat, you just add one unit to one side of the seams from the center every 5-8 rows. to expand like a "dress" add to both sides. it doesn't hurt to place markers on the rows so you can keep track. trust me lol you don't want to have to go back and find where it messed up and undo it. ho boy.
      to make the corner on my hood so its some what round, you take a rectangle sheet. fold it width wise. then connect the units on one side. do it again for the other side and connect them together with a seam.
      you'll be able to figure it out im sure. im not much of a teacher lol. please don't hesitate to ask questions if you get stuck!! i can't wait to see what you came up with!!!! :D

    I've been saving up soda tabs for about a year now so I could make a chainmail shirt for cosplaying as my D&D character!
    I found this video a while back and I remembered about it today while I was thinking of whether or not I had saved enough tabs to start something with, and I think I might be close?
    Do you remember roughly how many tabs it took for you to make your chain trench coat? I know that's way bigger than the chain shirt I want to make, but I figure if I have enough for something that big, I should easily have enough for my chain shirt

    • @honestgashandmade5831
      @honestgashandmade5831  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HEY! :D thanks! so i was doing teh maths and wow. i was expecting a lot less. so i weighed a single tab and it came to .25g so i converted 11lbs into grams it came very close to 5000 so i rounded up and multiplied it by 4 and the whole trench coat comes to 20,000 tabs... roughly.
      soo i would say the shoulder to waist is maybe 40% (8000) waist down is about 50% (10,000) then of course the hood and mask must be the last 10%. (2000) depending on the length, i would say you are looking at 5000 at the least. :D a pound of tabs is a little under 2000
      a pleated skirt can be made by adding one more tab to each side of the sections between the seams. so. say you have ten tabs per row, (9 tabs per row every other row) between 6 seams. you have ten rows of that. then in the next ten rows, make the 9 per row into 11 per row (10 per row every other row) and just repeat down the line. :D
      i would bump up those numbers for the sake of it. i don't think i had the hood and mask when i weighed it.
      :D im so excited you are interested in building something big! :D it will take some time. but if you just keep putting time into it. it won't take all that long. i suggest you set up what i like to call my portable soda tab preparation station. a fanny pack, or a satchel (for me it was an old three compartment vitamin case) big enough to have three compartments, and enough room for a small pair of pliers. one compartment for clean tabs. one for gouged tabs and one for bent tabs. what you wanna do is make a bunch of each step. that saves a little time not having to go from wire cutters to pliers to cutters. if you have any questions or need motivation, let me know and we can figure it out :D im here to reply.

      First, you need to know the shape of what you want to make. If you have a skirt that you want it to look like, you can measure the seams and start at the waist. It's way easier to put it on a mannequin over the skirt.
      Say you want to have a split, down the front or sides. You would keep with the aforementioned pattern for a pleated skirt but not add any to the parts that border the split. Maybe even remove one.
      The way I got mine to drape down the way it does is by only adding one to the side of the seam furthest from the middle seam. (Both sides of the middle seam.)
      Really, you just have to get started. :D you can get more tabs along the way. Churches and bars are good places to ask if you can put a tab jar where people can see it. It's best to explain what they are for so people can excited to get involved. :D
      It's gonna look awesome! And it's gonna feel good to show it off :D and I'm gonna feel good knowing that someone will inevitably be inspired by you to do it too! I have a discord that we can chat in if you ever need more direct instructions.

    Hey! Super cool idea. I’m wondering when it’s necessary to use the seams? Also, how do I get a more rounded shape? Thanks for this tutorial, super neat!!

    • @honestgashandmade5831
      @honestgashandmade5831  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      excellent question! :D i used my existing trench coat as a template. i measured out 63 feet of seam. then draped it over the shoulders. aside from cosmetic, it also allows you to add and subtract from either side of the seam. for example, after the waist, i began to add a unit, starting at the middle seam on both sides every ten rows. then from the middle out, add a unit to the side of the seam closest to the middle. (also every ten rows) that allowed for a billowing effect. (looks like assassins' creed) by accident, mind you. you can experiment with different patterns. if you add to both sides, it would make a sort of long "skirt" ( seams end the same length)
      i really hope that helps with a more rounded shape. if you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to ask. ill do my best to solve any problem you come across. :D

    First, thank you so much for sharing this technique! Very useful and helpful. I've started on a pretty good set of links, but I'm trying to figure out where exactly I should put the seams. Any advice on that? I imagine around the shoulders and maybe at the waist. When you showed the headpiece I couldn't wrap my brain on how you made the links go around like they did. I have no tailor skills so I'm a little stumped when it comes to making the shape lol. Thanks in advance!

      @honestgashandmade5831  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that is excellent news!! :D im so glad my video found you man. it really makes the whole channel worth it lol
      most certainly!! i put my fabric trench coat on a manikin and mapped the seams from there. if you don't have a coat to emulate, you can use a t shirt and add seams where you like. if you don't have a manikin, you can make one out of duct-tape and stuffing and add a layer of fabric to it.
      start at the neck hole and shoulders. you can add the collar later. you don't want it to be super square so try to match the shape of the pattern of the coat. you are working on this grid (X and ---) you can add or remove units to any end of that grid. or any row along those lines.
      i accidentally created a tapering in the back by: there is a left and right side of every seam. Starting from the center seam down the back, add a unit to every row on the side of the seam closest to the center.
      if you have 10 rows of 10 units on the right side of your coat, the next ten rows down will have one unit added to the right side of the seam. making it rows of 11 units. mirror the other side. to bevel out the coat, add to both sides. to come in, remove from both sides.
      it is important to mark every 5 rows to ensure that you don't miss a layer and have to go backwards to find the problem. yarn will work.
      hmmm lol i think i need to make a new tutorial on how i made my coat.
      unfortunately, i made my hood through sheer force of will lol and a lot of trial and error. but! i will take a closer look and make a video to try and address your questions and more if i can think of them.
      it is really cool to see this tutorial take off the way it has. that old way of doing it is just so unsuited for making actual chainmail. i came up with it so long ago and realized nobody had come out with it yet. so i threw together this really poor quality and way too long video and its still my top climbing video :D even after making the short better one.

      @@honestgashandmade5831 Thanks a ton! I started making a diamond pattern just for the heck of it and realized it took a lot longer this way because i had to link each piece in two places and it was harder to maneuver the chainmail to allow it, so I started making a row.
      My idea was to make it wide as my shoulders and work my way down from there but your comment gave me a lot of insight. I do not have a mannequin but I may try to make one as you suggested. I wasn't sure I wanted to invest the time and energy until I felt like I could complete it but it seems like you have to be fully committed from the start lol.
      I'm going to keep at it and see how it goes. I can kind of understand why you got a estimate for $10k to make this. It's a very time consuming project! But so far it's been enjoyable. We'll see how that goes. I'm subbing in case you make any further tutorials. Thanks again for all the tips!

      ahhh yes i think i see what you mean by diamond shape. like a poncho or cowl. it could work. explore the concept. not sure what kind of problems you may face but thats part of the fun right?! it would add a new grain to it. :D i made my coat with the rows parallel to the ground. working my way one row at a time. you dont want to do too much of one side before moving on to other side. it can lead to big mistakes that are a lot of work to find and undo.
      ive never made a manikin myself but here is a good place to start. you will need it to be strong so keep that in mind.
      th-cam.com/video/7-5NkJPYS9U/w-d-xo.html
      oh boy you aint kidding lol but ill tell you what helps. if you put in the work consistently, document your progress, eat breath sleep this project, you will have an awesome coat of your making in no time at all. :D you can say that you made it yourself and watch people's jaws drop when they realize what its made from lol.
      make yourself something i like to call,.. a "soda tab preparation station" its three compartments and space for pliers and wire cutters. one compartment is for un gouged tabs. once you gouge them all, dedicate the other two compartments for tabs bent forward and back. i used a fanny pack for a while. then a vitamin container with three compartments KEEP THE FLAKES!! :D you can use them for other projects or display them as yet more proof that you did a big project.
      this way you can take every opportunity to work on preparing pieces so you can put them together when you get home.
      i know you can do this dude. don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have. if you get stuck, we can trouble shoot. i want to help you make this something you can wear proudly. :D and more importantly, something that wont fall apart the moment you pull it out of the box lol

      excellent question! :D apart from aesthetics, they allow you to change the direction of the grain.
      if you are making a standard t-shirt, it would be ideal to emulate the seams because its a pattern that you don't have to guess.
      it is possible to make a seamless shirt but it is going to be stiff.
      i think a t-shirt would be awesome! :D its worth the considerable amount of work.

      Hmmm. Not really sure it's necessary. I've worn mine out a few times and it rarely needs repairs. I don't think I've ever needed to replace a peice.
      Lest see though. The most effective way would be to solder them. That would be a lot of work and can be messy but the best.
      Glue or anything like that wouldn't last long.
      Tape would have the same problem but may make it more comfortable.

      yeah the double layer really makes a difference in strength. It would be worth it to solder the single layers.
      An alternative would be to use colored tabs as the top layer to create the tones you may be looking for.
      Rubber cement may be a good idea. It would be a little messy and need some trimming but that would probably last quite a while and be more comfortable
