Apply a little heat with you heat gun and try to reform the foam for a flatter shape. you could also do that and glue a small strip of 2mm foam to the inside while it’s curved to the desired shape. This will give the foam into the new shape

Hey bud. Love your work! I’m sure you’ve been asked before so apologies if so, but Is there any way to make impressions in the foam like the plates on the sides of Sutton hoo helmet?
A couple of different ways you can burn them in with a heat tool, or heat the foam and press a design in that will emboss the surface. Check out my how to make foam look like leather video and it will explain the process
Foam itself is durable and great from a lightweight alternative to metal and leather. But it is just foam so it’s not like you are going into actual combat

i made the helmet out of 12 mm foam and it worked out pretty well! the only thing is that you will have to heat form the foam in some way, i used a hair dryer and it worked pretty good. in terms of the shape of the helmet it looks pretty good but the bottom of it is flared a little bit and i blame it on the fact that i probably didn’t heat form it enough. other than that it was super simple to make and the template was perfect! my boyfriend loves the helmet lol

Follow the directions on my site and open the pdf in adobe acrobat or adobe reader and click poster in the page size area that scales it properly over several sheets regardless of your paper size
Thank you for this tutorial! i do have a question however. could i use 12 mm foam for the base of it or would that be too thick? or if i am able to use it would i need to change the size of the template? unfortunately im not exactly in the position to buy 6 mm foam lol
You’re welcome! 10-12mm might be a bit to thick for this build my only issue would be trying to get the curve of the helmet to stay. But you could always try and let me know 👍 I think the size of the helmet would still be ok without scaling up. But if you did I would go to much
@@SKSProps You never know until you try right? lol im gonna try and ill see if it goes well! wish me luck :)
i made the helmet out of 12 mm foam and it worked out pretty well! the only thing is that you will have to heat form the foam in some way, i used a hair dryer and it worked pretty good. in terms of the shape of the helmet it looks pretty good but the bottom of it is flared a little bit and i blame it on the fact that i probably didn’t heat form it enough. other than that it was super simple to make and the template was perfect! my boyfriend loves the helmet lol
I always follow SKS links to buy my foam and stuff. Unfortunately dickblick is out of SKS foam clay. Does anyone know where else I can buy SKS foam clay? (No other brand, only SKS brand) thank you
My Foam Clay is currently on a boat to the US should be available through Blick early January
Michael email me at SKSProps@gmail.com I might still have some in my warehouse
I am really struggling with printing out the template. Can anyone help.
Watch the how to print templates video
super
anyone else not able to get these to print to size even though you changed to the correct paper size?
Paper size doesn’t matter open the pdf in adobe acrobat or adobe reader and click poster in the printer settings that will scale it properly regardless of the paper you use
i downloaded adobe and when I print it printed the entire design on a single page. I unclicked the "fit to page" setting and now it only printed a single page with part of the template on it. Hopefully I can figure out what I did wrong. I am brand new to this hobby and have only made one helmet before today.
Under print setting in adobe click “poster” that will fix your problem
@@SKSProps That was it. Thanks. Now to make my son a helmet
