Yeah my locals had 2 yugioh tournaments a week, one were all spyral cards were banned the other was normal. My locals was the only one in the area to do this and the turn out every week was crazy. A usual size is around 15 - 20 people, this was around 35 - 40 people. It became so popular that they ended up doing a top 16 tournament, as you top locals you accumulated points and could participate if you were good enough. My locals ended up making custom mats with spyral masterplan coverd by a massive red cross as a prize for top four.

Multiple copies of Perlereino being able to turn into multiple different Tear names would turn otherwise somewhat bricky hands into the best hands the deck could possibly produce, and the same is true for Kash. The only time a ROTA not being once per turn doesn't matter much is if there's only one good target for it in the deck, and that target is a hard once per turn.

If there's one thing this series has taught me, it's that Konami is actually terrible at hitting problem cards in the meta. DAD? Eventually went to 1 after... a while. Wind-Up? Completely missed at first, almost lose the playerbase to Cardfight Vanguard. Dragon Rulers? Lmao almost a full year of them.

I'm having flashbacks to playing pen magician against my friend with spyral at the time. I got 2-0d almost every time. The amount of times I'd get droned for Maxx c on the top of my deck or would have to open a hand trap which just bloated my hands with non board breakers, it was rough
I don't think that the e ban was meant to stop tear tbh. It was more about giving players the option to contest Tear by removing floodgates while also dealing with problems like Mystic Mine and Curious while the players wait for the actual banlist and konami picks up data of tear from both the OCG and the remote duel tournament. Also they would've probably hit it abit if it was nats season or something, but since the format happened during christmas and new year were only remote duels and locals took place they probably just thought that a list wasn't that necessary since people have other things to do then playing yugioh.

Did they play any decks with set rotation since that limit feels a bit out of nowhere. I know there was a whole gateway to chaos at some point in time blocking the opponent from using their fieldzone but I don’t remember seeing it yet in history.
I think SR saw play early on as Field Spells 5-7, Trickstar probably running it as well as a bunch of jank. I think they probably just hit it because they knew it would be a problem card in the long run, especially once Field Spell turbo with Destrudo/AFD rolls around the corner
Set Rotation actually was one of the most important Anti-Spyral Card (while also being great in Spyral) So for you it's just Terraforming 4, 5, 6 which means 9 cards of your deck are your fieldspell which alone is broken (Spyral, ABC, Zefra, you name it) But more importantly, there are two fieldspells that MANDATORY search an archetypal card, Gateway to Chaos and Oracle of Zefra. So what you would do in e.g. a Spyral Mirror is go first, activate Set Rotation, get your fieldspell and with that basically full combo but more importantly block your opponents field spell zone forever because they couln't activate Gateway (or Oracle, but Gateway was more common) and Set Rotation says you need to activate your set field spell before you are allowed to play another. It was so gamechanging that people sometimes sided into a BLS Ritual just so they can unclog their field spell zone. As a Zefra player at that time that was the shit because no deck could abuse that better then Zefra but all in all it deserved to be hit, the one correct choice on the banlist.

What do you mean by not much interaction? Spyral's end board is 2 pops and maybe a Spin at this point, and there are enough handtraps to actually interact in Ash, Ogre, Mourner, Droll, Gamma, etc.

Ah yes, modern TCG banlist philosophy: Do as little as possible until they want to push a new thing, then kill everything that gets in the way of playing that. Why even have a "banlist schedule" when only 1 out of every 3 lists does anything noteworthy? They should just dedicate the other 2 list changes each year to adding old cards back into the game if they REALLY want to be that neglectful in their balancing.
Interestingly enough, Master Duel just.... does as little as possible, permanently. Frankly Tearlaments is the first deck they've really had to just slam on the banlist. With the exception of decks built around individual powerful non-archetypal cards (Halqifibrax), they've mostly just given small consistency hits and then waited for them to naturally fall out of the meta with powercreep.

It didn't regain Tier 0 strength until about a week ago when the new Fusion Grapha released and Tear players started running King of the Swamp again, as well as more tech pieces like Beatrice and Diviner of the Herald that give them extra spins on the self-mill slot machine.
This era of Spyral reminds me alot of the Tear 0 format. The Tier 0 deck puts up alot of interaction and not floodgates (sleeper, utility wire, handtraps, etc.) while all the decks below it are trying to floodgate the best deck, with this match showing that Pendulum Magician was just making Bagooska and/or handlooping for 3. (Yet Mr. MBT doesn't cope on this format, odd :))
Spyral makes the same line 99% of the time, but tear is a secuencing puzzle every game (and a lot of gambling with the mills for a dopamine rush). So spyral has a boring gameplan and an even more boring mirror, while tear has fun gameplay and an enjoyable mirror. Both formats might be the same on paper, but when playing the you realize how different they are

Also, did you watch the SPYRAL mirror episode, the games become Sleeper control, and become very grindy and interaction heavy. The tear mirror has just who drew more Bystials/Milled more shufflers.
I don’t know if cimos argument for this deck sticking around holds any water looking through the lends of 2023 when SHS and purrely were killed after just becoming playable. And a year prior the did it to bird up.

The monsters they search are HOPTs...spyrals weren't for the most part. So it wouldn't be much of a benefit these days

Pendulum monsters are monster cards. They are only treated as spell cards if they are set as scales in the Pendulum Zone.
