    Hello! I've discovered your video kinda late but I was watching this and realized you're a current student at UAS and I live in Wasilla AK and enrolled into UAA to begin my biological science degree 😀 my dream is to be a marine biologist as well since I was 5. I just wanted to say hi its really cool that I found your videos and that I can relate to you being so close. Thank you for your content it has really helped me gain the confidence I need to finally follow my dream to study the ocean and its inhabitants.

    Do you think it'd be a good idea to get a general biology bachelors degree first and then get a masters in marine biology?

    • @onedirectioninfection5756
      @onedirectioninfection5756 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      suuper late but i wouldn't recommend it. you'd be missing out of 4 years of field and lab work, making connections with professors and others in the field, and would be missing a loooot of marine bio knowledge going into grad school. my 2 cents :)

    • @onedirectioninfection5756
      @onedirectioninfection5756 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@reidp646 hi! just graduated with a marine affairs degree and currently am in grad school studying marine policy & management. first, know that there aren't many jobs with the exact title of 'marine biologist,' there's many things you can do in the field of marine biology where your title won't explicitly be Marine Biologist. find a school that gets hands-on the first year (first semester if possible) so you can get in the field and learn tools, data analysis/collection, species of your local area, etc. this can help in getting an internship/job during your college time. keep your mind open throughout your college career because marine biology is SO broad. depending on where you go and the classes you take, you can possibly learn about mammals/vertebrates, inverts, law & policy, algae, oceanography, animal behavior, human impacts, social science, research, etc and be open to all of it because it may be something you never thought you'd like. definitely take note of your interests and let your professors know so they can recommend you opportunities. also, try to do research or a thesis if you can because data analysis and collection is a major plus in a lot of fields. overall, just keep an open mind and find a college that gets you out in the field as soon as possible. let me know if you have any questions!

    When you say “research the school”, What ways do you recommend doing this? Any tips?
    You’re from California, right? Which California schools do you recommend for Marine Biology? We are really just going off of the top rated ones. My daughter doesn’t have a speciality she is looking into, like you have so we’re really not sure what else to go off of.
    UCLA is ranked #1, but obviously a tough college to get into.
    She is also looking at UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, California State Long Beach, and UCSD.
    Also looking into University of Hawaii at Manoa. (We just returned from touring the school, but didn’t get specifics about the Marine Biology program).
    This was a great video. Thank you. Good advice on the professor hours too. (Marine bio, or not).

      Look into their schools website, and ready up on the marine biology/marine science programs! Long beach is GREAT! I myself didn’t apply there (too close to home😂) but I have friends who go there for Marine Bio and they adore it. They have great shark research going on as well! Santa Cruz is also great! Just keep in mind UC schools are more expensive! (not sure if that’s a factor, but it was for me and a lot of people!) I haven’t heard much on UCLA tbh. No one I know has attended there for marine bio. I applied to Manoa! I loved the school but felt my heart belonged in Alaska. She has a great list going! Good luck to her!🤍

      Advice to anyone who is thinking of attending University of Hawaii Manoa: Don't. I would avoid that university like the plague. They have a poor safety record and keep getting themselves involved in litigation. Choose a University where you be appreciated and valued.

So any suggestions would really be helpful!

    Question. I am going to college and I want to be wildlife vet or aquatic and is marine biology the same as aquatic vet or which do you prefer? And what classes and courses should I take? And as far as wildlife should I get into zoology or? Idk haha im a little on both sides with wildlife and aquatic and well as marine biology. I'm also going to RCTC that's In Minnesota :)

    • @Artwasheree
      @Artwasheree 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pretty sure marine biology and aquatic vet are different they both deal with aquatic animals but marine biology is more of labs and ocean work where as aquatic vet your working with the animals constantly and doing surgery to fix them up and heal them so essentially with an aquatic vet your like a doctor but for marine animals.

      U of T is much better for marine science- they offer a dual degree marine science-biology which is much better for job opportunities. But they are VERY expensive. I wanted to go there, but unfortunately can’t afford it. I’ll be going to university of south florida next year

    • @onedirectioninfection5756
      @onedirectioninfection5756 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i'm not OP but i'm majoring in marine affairs w/ a marine bio minor. some courses my school (university of new haven) offers are the standard first-semester intro to marine biology (run down of all the tools, coastal environments, common organisms, etc), marine invertebrate zoology, marine vertebrate zoology, aquaculture 1&2, marine pollution, marine botany, marine ecology, oceanography, marine conservation & restoration, global change, animal behavior, and intro to GIS! some marine affairs courses (that i love!) include marine fisheries policy, coastal marine resource management, and marine environment society & sustainability! there's a lot of overlap btwn the two and a lot of people take classes from both and also env sci!
      at my school, a lot of the classes will go out on the field at least a few times a semester, with intro to MB going out every single class (which was once a week for ~4 hours and amazing because your second week at college you're waist deep in the ocean), oceanography goes out on boats to collect samples to monitor water parameters across the months of the semester, both inverts and verts go out into the field or on field trips as well as having a mandatory lab once a week with often dissections, aquaculture involves setting up and maintaining tanks on your own and class time, and marine botany goes out often to collect algae and make presses of it for a big final project. hope this helped! :)
