      This is the way I think about it. Most "prey" animals automatically know their predators innately. You can breed chickens indoors for 15 generations and the 16th generation of chickens will still be terrified of hawks and large predatory birds.
      So now this leads to the pondering part of my brain. Why would we as humans have that same innate feeling towards things that are pretending to be humans?? As if.... maybe there was a point where there was something that would use decoy humans to lure humans in. In the exact same way we use fake ducks to lure ducks in or fake doe to lure bucks in.

      Read Blindsight by Peter Watts. Amazing sci-fi book about (among other things) worldwide ancient vampire legends being based on an ancestral memory of a hominid predator that stalked us at night, drank our blood, had super-human strength, speed, and cunning, very nearly (but not quite) human appearance but just imperceptibly different that merely looking at their faces gave humans a feeling of dread and terror without quiet knowing why…but who died off around the time of the agricultural revolution and the construction of permanent structures and buildings - which created the presence of right-angles, not usually seen in nature. The problem is, for these nocturnal hominid predators, thru a purely random evolutionary glitch, right angles caused them to have seizures. Hence the ancestral-memory-turned-legend of vampires - human-looking monsters that feast on human flesh and blood, who hunt us at night, have superhuman physical and mental abilities, and who hate crosses.
      Great stuff.

      That's too complex...if that was true it would have evolved in other animals too but it's not observed. The only difference between humans and animals is our technology and complex behavior, stemming from our complex brain. One of the most accepted hypotheses is simply because our expectations don't match reality. Robots don't exist in nature, they shouldn't be real and yet we make them real. Because of our complicated brains but mere animal nature, our brain can't compute that something looks like it's real but it isn't, making us feel uncomfortable. Not because we evolved to feel that way, but because we can't compute it in our heads. It's why religion exists too, completely fabricated behavior by humans because of our complicated brains. Gods don't exist for other animals.

      @maximusasauluk7359 you know, evolution is random changes making slow progress by rule of elimination. if this set of changes made by pure chance make it through to the next generation, its either better for surviving long enough to breed and for getting a mating partner or you got that far by luck.
      its not as if all the animals meet at some round table to discuss what theyve changed every couple thousand years, its pure chance.

    • @maximusasauluk7359
      @maximusasauluk7359 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      @@johannesviljoen9656 Evolution is much more nuanced than that, if only it was that simple. You have features in animals that are seemingly useless, like: Vestigial structures, in humans, our weird body hair is an example; Spandrels, which are features that are indirect consequences of evolution. For example humans didn't evolve a chin, it doesn't serve a direct purpose, it's existence is simply due to how our skulls evolved; Irrational phobias probably fall here too, or diseases that were never eliminated from our gene pool because they were never a problem before (type 2 diabetes, morbid obesity). This uncanny valley could fall in this category beautifully, it may be an unintended result from our complex brain; Sexual selection, many birds have shinny extravagant feathers for absolutely no reason other to impress a mate and reproduce, they provide no survival advantage.

Could also be something from our deep past of ancestors like fish fearing predators that mimic their species.

    For those who are wondering why humans need mechanisms that make them avoid things that look human but aren't human, I've seen this discussion before. The theories that I heard and found convincing are that this was the way for people to avoid corpses (because they could easily become infected with something, obviously), as well as other people who contracted rabies from the bite of other carriers. Rabies is fatal and there is no cure for it, and the only way for primitive man not to die from rabies is to avoid contact with infected people. Rabies can be recognized at later stages: in addition to behavior, it affects a person’s appearance, movements, and facial expressions. Look it up if you want, but be warned that it's quite unsettling. Some theorize that this is why we are repulsed by things that look human but behave uncharacteristically or look just a bit off.

Can we all agree that the fact that there have been predator beings that were similar enough to 'pretend to be human' in a reality from an ancient past that's far more terrifying than we're aware of, for long enough to develop this instinct but recent enough for that trauma to follow us psychologically today is the *_real_* uncanny valley reality??
