high guard is the best for self defense & most of boxing imo. Most people are head hunters, few are liver killers. And the torso just like the legs you can condition them. You cant condition your face a lot.

I think another important factor is vision and head movement. Tighter guards make it harder for you to move defensively and also make it harder for you to see. In boxing I prefer to have my hands a little out so i can see punches without clearly and also move my head. For me its better to avoid or intercept a punch entirety, with high guard being a last resort. Some people really do punch hard enough to rock you through the guard, not most people, but some.
That makes sense cause you don't want to be too tight or too long I use that mid style too. I try all the other ones and I feel more complete with this one.
Congratulations on reaching 200K subscribers Gabriel,l Amazing Accomplishment, and thank you for this video, I think it will definetly help me for developing my ideal guard!
I use long high guard the most soviet style with only the lead hand extended and the rear hand holding the phone. I mix That with philly shell. I use lift and drop parries as i move between the 2. If someone forces into close range i go to a reverse cross guard and use only my elbows until i can get space to go back to long range counter striking. I don't mind stopping kicks with one arm as long as i move my head away at the same time. All from a bladed stance with switch stepping to turn bad positions into good positions .
Congratulations for the 200k subscribers. I hope you will continue to create more content like this. It really educate us about martial arts especially to us who have a very little knowledge about it. May God bless you always.
Great content as always and you probably get this a lot but you and Jeff (mmashredded) really should do a collab together. We've seen you with Fighttips, hard2hurt, sensei Seth. You and Jeff in a video would be fireworks!
Love to hear that. I'm still scratching the surface of what I can do with this channel. Proper filming space, training partners and a punching bag and it's going to get extra special.
You should honestly have two guards you focus on, in my opinion. One for strikers/boxers, one for those that like to chute or rip lots of kicks. And the answers/suggestions are, again to your point, completely dependent on the martial art + what defense suits your natural body movements.
Good point on finding the guard that fit our style. Reminds me of a coach who blamed me for using a long guard during a sparring saying "you fight like you're confortable". Well yes I am 😂!
Worth noting about the growing popularity of 4oz gloves in MMA and One Championship Muay Thai: guys are getting KO’d through and around high/tight guards due to the little defensive real estate the small gloves provide. I’m noticing the defensive style in those places shifting towards longer open guards + head/feet movement. This also allows for more play with hand traps “sticky hands” and elbows. Most of us Joes who are training/sparring 16oz gloves still should practice and mostly rely on tight guards. Open “sticky” guard as well as Philly shell guards are still fun to play with tho ;)
another important point to note is that traditional muay thai doesn't make use of the dutch guard because it is a lazy static high guard, and muay thai figthers have always preferred an active muay thai high guard.
The guards used to be longer and more elbows and forearms based when boxing used 4 to 6 oz gloves. If you go watch fights from the 20s and 30s dudes are always handtrapping and crossguarding with elbows.
Our instructor in muay thay gym does not like dutch style guard at all. He says its wrong in muay thay becouse opponent can grap your hands and pull them and make a knee to your stomach. Also it lives you open for elbows to head.
One disadvantage that i see also of using those tight guards, is that when get hit, you get hit the gloves and occupy your vision, this can make your opponent to get better angles (a thing that Lomachecnko is very good on doing vs tight guards). Also because you are getting hit on the gloves, sometimes at both gloves, both are occuppied on receiving the shot so you are not able to counter punch so effetely at the same time or in that small frame of a second. Another disadvantage is that sometimes judges count those punches on guard, has points, because is hard to see if lands or not. I like to mix with a long guard, low hands (if confident and to rest) and tight guard where I'm cornered too pressured. Nice video btw, you could also add Philly shell
I use a mix of the 2nd one he talked about and long guard/ Muay Thai guard. I don’t have my Arms to far out though. It’s close enough to where if I get swarmed I can get them to my face quick. Just gotta play with all the guards and you’ll find a couple that you like and you’ll build like a hybrid type is guard. That’s just my opinion.
I have always liked the Superfoot stance. But you have to be quick on leaning backwards correctly and the Jab is a little more work because you have to bring it up than out. Other than that I feel more relaxed with the front arm down and feel like it saves you shoulder some strength.
Best guard changes depending on range, angle, level and intention. You should be able to transition between multiple guards seemlessly. Thats one thing boxers understand that other strikers don't.
Congrats on reaching 200k subs Coach! And thank you heaps for putting out high quality content. You are one of the few YT content creators I fully trust and heed their advice to a tee when it comes to striking. 🙏💯👍
Gabriel - thank you for all you do! Your content is amazing, and I learn so much from you. Question: could you speak to which guards are better for which body types? For example, I’m tall and I train Muay Thai, so I feel much more comfortable in a longer guard. Would you say that’s the right approach? It just seems to work better for my range.
Hey Gabriel, great video as always and congrats on the 200k - you'll be at the million in no time with your dedication 😊. I think a breakdown video on Tawanchai would be incredible! His style is so crisp
I use the Dutch guard when I have boxing gloves and the 2nd hands out guard that can parry in MMA gloves. At mid range I sort of use the 5th guard though only with my lead hand. My jabs can hit from unconventional angles and from below the usual field of vision and at mid range I can use head movement for punches and see kicks coming to back out. In the pocket though, I use the Dutch guard almost exclusively, and a modified version with mma gloves
As someone that's 6'4 I always did pretty good in sparring but always felt something was missing. It's like when you try to do certain moves shorter opponents do you just get hit. Nobody teaches the tall guys how to fight. After studying Vladimir klitchko and Larry Holmes my defense and counters have improved like 100%. I'm switching between a long guard and Philly shell and it's working pretty good. I'm not worried about the left hook for example because I can just do a little step back. My main defense isn't my guard. It's the space between us. The long guard and Philly style allows me to fire off jabs and probes to keep that distance. Then I can fall back to catching the arms on the inside, stepping back and slightly leaning, or tying up. While it might be boxing centric, I found it's worked very well in sparring against class mates who do muay thai. I only have to worry about leg kicks, but they struggle to land hands since I can out maneuver them while they have that traditional Thai stance. Dont sleep on the mid guard or long guard. Especially as a taller fighter that can get away with it. If you are 6'4 you shouldn't be trying to peekaboo and slip to the inside. Why do you want to be on the inside. Jab jab and jab some more.
6:20 What if your hands are higher up but they’re still moving around a bit? Kinda like Rafael Fiziev. Im pretty short and usually my sparring partners are taller than me. Been training MMA for 3 years. I tried utilizing a more dutch/standard boxing guard first (my background is boxing), but longer guards feel a bit easier for me. Example: Volk and Saenchai
I am somewhere between Nong O and Superleks guard. I love real thai boxing. Difficult to be a Femur striker in dutch guard, that works best for people who lean more on the boxing. I like to have my hands more available for hand traps and such
you should try the muay thai long guard system, and if you are a Little more advanced learn how to use muay thai low guards. so you can look like a professional thai fighter
Hey Gabriel great video! Maybe you could do a video on developing that “killer instinct?” I do great in sparring sessions when it comes to striking but fumbled when I got into the MMA cage. I still won but I knew my striking could be better. I was hesitant
Great video! I use the dutch guard aswell, and i think alot of people that have issues with the dutch guard things you said some have, is due to a weak link somewhere? I found that even if one element is off, such as bad foot contact/not tighting core, not leaning into the guard slightly, not making proper arm contact with the body, it makes the guard frail and easily rocked around. This is just my opinion! But i do think the dutch guard has alot of small details that needs to be executed to make a strong guard, and if one of the links are weak you might get a frail guard.
Yeah you have to block with intention, thats why i like this guard sometimes since i can go toe to toe while being "safe" from uppercuts/cross/jabs, still have to adjust for hooks, but when im shelled up i always make sure im ready for that punch@@dirtpoorchris
Hi Gabriel, are you gonna do an analisis in the next Adesanya opponent, Sean Strickland with his weird philly shell-parry style were he parry most of of attacks granting him the best strike defense in his weight class
Dutch guard is useless against elbows, aspecially from the middle and picking elbows from the sides. It's also puts you in very vulnerable position if someone clinches you. It might take a lot of time to be comfortable with the long guard, and yes you might take some punches to the forehead, but at least you wont get destroyed by elbows and clinch.
That's a way too simple explanation, which in some way has been debunked since people in ONE fight muay thai with small gloves and a lot of muay thai fighters get knocked out because they are not used to brawling/punch flurrys. With regular gloves Dutch guard will be a safe option for most people, especially in kickboxing rules, while ofcourse open hands guard fits muay thai rules since the pacing is way slower and majority of the time the trades are shorter with often a longer distance preference for kicks scoring.
@@DKYtut I would say the key is to know when to ditch the long guard to the duch guard, bu if your default/ initial guard is dutch you won't last long in muay thai fight.
My reach is fing long to really do anything with Dutch guard besides guarding. Yes, sometimes I'll use it to just guard attacks effectively, but that shit is for fkin manlets honestly
but these are not all the guards gabriel, there is a mixed one where left hand is more extended and right hand is closer to body. i think some called it the "fencing guard" there is another where your left arm is low and protecting the stomach (mayweather philly shell)

I like to utilize the Dutch guard, but Tawanchai braking Kiria’s arm was pretty brutal. Can you do a breakdown?
He didn't absorb the kick with both hands and he used his forearm.
You have to stay in the pocket with tawanchai or stick and move
Great video! I use the dutch guard aswell, and i think alot of people that have issues with the dutch guard things you said some have, is due to a weak link somewhere? I found that even if one element is off, such as bad foot contact/not tighting core, not leaning into the guard slightly, not making proper arm contact with the body, it makes the guard frail and easily rocked around. This is just my opinion! But i do think the dutch guard has alot of small details that needs to be executed to make a strong guard, and if one of the links are weak you might get a frail guard.
Some people don't actually block or parry a punch they just sorta flinch and shell up and happen to block on accident.
Yeah you have to block with intention, thats why i like this guard sometimes since i can go toe to toe while being "safe" from uppercuts/cross/jabs, still have to adjust for hooks, but when im shelled up i always make sure im ready for that punch@@dirtpoorchris
I do feel like people's guards improve significantly after the first time they get rocked haha
isn't dutch guard a death sentence in a street fight?
I dont know i dont do street fights@@thomasmanana2958
I wish you would have talked about both MMA gloves and boxing gloves. Since you have experience with both.
got a recent video for you on that.
4 oz vs 10oz and the differences it creates

Congrats Gabe on your 200K subs. For me your channel is the go-to place for the kickboxing sport. You are the man🏆
🙏🙏🙏
Great video but what about Philly Shell?
Thanks for the info 👍
How do you think the Dutch guard would fair without gloves? Like in a self defence situation.
As a very lanky guy with long arms, I prefer long guard. But as soon as I enter into boxing range, I Switch to high guard
💯 Best of Both World's 👊👊
i believe that if you have a close guard ... there is a way to go throw.
Hi Gabriel, are you gonna do an analisis in the next Adesanya opponent, Sean Strickland with his weird philly shell-parry style were he parry most of of attacks granting him the best strike defense in his weight class
nice
what about the strickland shell
Hello man. You can explain me the guard of Chingiz Allazov ? Please ? Thanks!
Philly shell Is pretty much In a class of its own. Also I know boxing is not mma or muay thai.
I like peekaboo cuz it makes it hard to see what attack I'll throw. Arms legs it's all good👍basically the dutch guard
the dutch guard is crap try an active highguard

I would say the key is to know when to ditch the long guard to the duch guard, bu if your default/ initial guard is dutch you won't last long in muay thai fight.
My reach is fing long to really do anything with Dutch guard besides guarding. Yes, sometimes I'll use it to just guard attacks effectively, but that shit is for fkin manlets honestly
but these are not all the guards gabriel,
there is a mixed one where left hand is more extended and right hand is closer to body. i think some called it the "fencing guard"
there is another where your left arm is low and protecting the stomach (mayweather philly shell)
What about Philly Shell Gabriel?
can you make shorts of ur content my attention span cant handle this
Wich is better for streetfight as self defence? What if no gloves?
200k!!!!
