  • The Mill Creek Central Railroad celebrated their 20th Anniversary August 08-11th, 2019. We were on hand for the meet and filmed all the visiting steam power that pounded the rails over the four day meet.
    In our first video from the meet, a 1.5" scale, 7.5" gauge Pennsylvania Q2 is fired up and operated in the afternoon hours of Friday August 9th. This Q2 is a duplex locomotives which means that it has four cylinders mounted to a single rigid frame.
    We hope you enjoy the video--keep an eye out for much more from the Mill Creek 20th in the coming weeks. Thanks for watching The Steam Channel!

      The Q1 was built with 77" drivers - not ideal for a freight engine. And the rear cylinders were underneath the firebox - very dirty location. The Q2 had 69" drivers - about perfect for a fast freighter, and correct cylinder location. It was a much improved design over the Q1. Unfortunately, they not enough better than a T1 2-10-4 to justify the cost and extra maintenence. Pity none were saved!

    • @pennsyr1
      @pennsyr1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Michael Naisbitt To answer your question, few Q2s were built due to business economics. When placed side-by-side with the PRR's other modern heavy freight steam locomotive, the J1, the Q2s were a little stronger and significantly faster, but had far higher operating and maintenance costs which offset their advantages.
      The Q2 would number just 26 units, compared to the J1 which would see 125 examples built across two class variations.

    Do the prototypes of this Q2, or the Cab Forward or Big Boy articulated locos have a specific timing between the front drivers and the rear drivers, or if one set slips, do they just wind up in some random timing?

    • @espeescotty
      @espeescotty 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both of the sets of drivers are completely separate from each other in terms of timing. One throttle controls the steam to both engines (the term for each cylinder/driver set) and they operate independently. It does happen at times that one engine will lose traction and begin to slip while the other still grips the rails and continues to pull. It works this way in all American articulateds and duplex steam engines. You can find videos here on TH-cam that show it in action....UP Challenger 3985 is probably the most common, although there was even a video from May of this year with Big Boy 4014 losing his feet for a few seconds. I hear that Big Boys weren't known for being very slippery. There is even one famous, maybe infamous, clip that shows a Pennsy T-1 4-4-4-4 duplex in the 1940's as she looses traction on her front engine and the wheels spin up to what must be at least 100mph in an instant while the locomotive and train and rear drivers are moving at 30ish mph.

      That would vary widely based on the kind of locomotive your referring to and how you’d plan on going about getting one. The H10 after the intro credits is offered ready to run for $25,000. Hiring a shop to build something like that Q2 would cost well over $50,000-$100,000.
      If you plan on building an engine- you may spend $10,000-$15,000 on castings and material over 10 years, and then whatever a boiler would come out to...but you’d save all the labor costs. $1,500 a year on a project makes it more attainable if you have the skills (or are willing to teach yourself).

    Is there a chance we could see a model of PRR’s S1 duplex?

      It's the builder's preference in this scale but it is not necessary and just one more thing that will need service on the engine.

    Theyre rebuilding a problematic Duplex instead of the q2, the only One that Worked as intented

  • @K9TheFirst1
    @K9TheFirst1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    So can anyone tell me the engineering reasoning for Pennsy to make a duplex with a non-uniform set of drive wheels? Most duplexes I've seen - along with the only two classes of triplex engines - usually have the same number of axels in each set of drivers.

    • @RedRam331
      @RedRam331 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, there was no reason not to. The Q2 had ten drivers for the same reason a J1 2-10-4 Texas type had ten drivers. It was the right number of drivers for the size, weight and performance of the engine.
      They clearly got it right, as the Q2 was the most powerful steam locomotive the PRR ever used, and the most successful duplex-drive engine ever built. Unfortunately, even with all that, they weren't that much more powerful than J1 and were a lot more expensive to maintain, so when freight diesels starting arriving they were near the top of the list for early retirement.

      @@RedRam331 I think the reason for the duplex drive was to lighten the weight of the driving rods and reduce the size of the cylinders to reduce operating stresses of that the cylinders and rods that 2-10-4's had. There was an article in Trains Magazine back in the late 80's about this and other super power locos. I think the end result was a more complex machine that had other problems that simpler steam engines did not have and they fell to the more efficient diesels.
