I PRACTICE MMA AND SHOOKAN SINCE 20 YEARS for those who thinks that only mma is the only right way.. think to this, in a real no rule fight any blu belt or better may defeat a lot of mma fighter with NUKITE in an eye. (for those that don't know nukite, the first time you study nukite in shotokan is at yellow belt , HEIAN NIDAN) real karate teach mortal technics, but the laws and the modern training methods avoid to teach those blows. MMA teach to have real good timing and the feel whit blows
Firstly, this guy is amazing, not gonna bother going into detail, he just is! Secondly, you can't compare this to MMA, they're totally different things, Karate is an ancient martial ART, MMA is a SPORT, and has no-one thought about the fact that mma means MIXED MARTIAL ARTS!!! Some of those guys probably use shotokan others, mui thai, whatever, dont compare them!
With Yahara Sensei, the fight isn't over until your opponent has stopped moving (or breathing!): he is just as dangerous on the ground as he is on his feet. And I have great respect for the"ukeni" - his training and demonstration partners: Sensei Yahara's version of control is to leave bruises, rather than lay you out cold. Very much looking forward to training with him in a couple of weeks - and just a bit scared, too!
Hes not bad at all good timing, speed and control of his technique. very good for a shotokan practioner (these days most shotokan schools dont use their bunkai for shit as its all point sparring, this guy's doing it oldschool). Good work.
Wow very excellent Video ! ! ! Thank You for posting on the TH-cam.. Such an incredible athelete with so many great accomplishments.. 5 STARS all the way around ! ! ! Paul D'Antuono The Punch Professor Studied under Sugimoto with Frank Cruz. Florida U.S.A.
Yahara has a private security company now, but when he was in his 40's he was working as a bodyguard. One day, 34 low-rank Yakuza members wanted to beat up one of Yahara's clients. Yahara faced them and defeated some of them in hand-to-hand combat, while the rest escaped. He was threatened for death by the boss of the Yakuza that Yahara beated up because he refuesed to pay the hospital of those men. After more than 20 years Yahara still alive...
thank you so much for your nice comment man....finally someone that knows about martial arts and respects muay thai even if he does something different ....i am a muay thai but i really respect grabling
I wish people would stop this comparing, MMA is a SPORT not actual life and death fighting. Some things work and some don't use what you can when you can in plus it's called Mixed Martial Arts so it's whatever you wanna throw together to make your own unique style.
he keeps attacking after his initial attack. that's the proper mindset to adopt for a martial artist. the problem with sport karate is that it conditions you to stop after the initial strike which is bad conditioning for self defense. he is a true karateka because he bypasses that sport karate conditioning when attacking and every exchange he fought as if his life depended on it.
There are few who practice karate like this, tough & painful but when life or limb are in danger, that is usually tough & painful because your survival depends on being tough & absorbing some pain.
Who cares about MMA? Every martial arts video on youtube is followed by shed loads of comments about how the person would do in MMA. Mikio Yahara is a hard man and has proved it on many occasions. There's nothing wrong with MMA, but it's not the be all and end all.
i'd like to see someone like Yahara enter the UFC/Pride. the MMA rules would put a lot of constraints on what he could do, but maybe his punches and kicks would be enough. plus, give him 9 months of BJJ or other grappling training.
It isn't about the belt that you wear or how long that you train but about the progression that you have made. imo people shouldn't be awarded above 1st dan in under 10 years of training unless they literally train everyday and gain the experience in that way.
@TheOneNo20 What makes you think someone fighting in the UFC isnt also capable of collar bone strikes, neck strikes, groin and joint strikes as well as pressure points? It's not limited to karate you know, and someone with an understanding of grappling will be able to execute a many other illegal moves if you happen to get close.
Funny my uncle a Royal Marine Commando in the second world war trained 90% in open hand strikes. If you've read WE Fairbairn's work which was and still is the definitive manual for training all special forces in unarmed combat around the world , there is zero grappling. All open hand strikes. Which are illegal in mma. And a major part of karate training. You're obviously attached to your opinion. If you enjoy mma then great. Karate has served me well.
you mean japanese kicboxing developed that way,in the states it was just a mixture of boxing and karate/tkd kicks, not specifically kyokushin since that wasnt a popular style in america in the late 60s/early 70s.
Philmoscowitz , I too would like to see this guy in an MMA arena. Sadly, while it's an excellent exhibition, the truth is he would be marmalized! Shotokan tournament fighting bears no resemblance to the skills needed in MMA.
so now youve discovered that no open handed strikes are banned in mma have you?The only strike banned is a headbutt, the rest are target bans.Full conatct open hand strikes are no more dangerous than punches if you omit vital spots, shootfighting has been doing it for 20 yrs.If you cant spar it,you cant test it.
I do not know but I can tell you that the champion from brasil desndency figths in the MMA uses powerful punching and kinking that many of then have knock down separing from jujitsu that brasilian is dangerus standin up I think posible that guy learned in japan
I think mma is probably the best environment for psycho-stress conditioning these days. Karate today isn't what it was when I was training back in the 80's and 90's. My only concern with mma is too much emphasis on 1 -2-1 fighting. But maybe I'm just nit-picking:-)
I practise open hand strikes full contact on a bag. The bag doesn't mind. Practising them full contact on a human being would result in undesirable consequences would it not? In mma some targets are illegal...exactly my point. There's a great saying which comes to mind here and this will be my last comment. "Faced with changing one's mind or proving there's no need to...most people get busy with the proof" I wish you every success in your training and in life.
Karate never had effective training methods, not in 1930,1970 or now,the contact was harder but still allowed no grappling and was point /ippon format.Karate has some decent techs but its the way you train them that renders them workable or not, machida has the right format, full contact with bjj and wrestling mixed in.
@twodeltas he has never done any substantial grappling training, hed be totally useless on the ground as would everyone without years of training. He has a great spirit though and could be trained for mma if he was motivated and in his prime just like machida.
the real karate masters have their open hand strike like the finger strike and knife hand trust as their real weapon in real combat and they train their open hand strike secretly. The usual weapon is the close fist for a one-punch effect which many karate blacbelts can not do it because they are not real karatekas. But behind the punch of a true karateka is the open hand trust which serves as a metal rod to poke or ice-pick the body, eyesand neck but only a real karate master can do it.
@OMFGDmanrules 1 person uses shotokan sucessfully,machida,1 person in 17 yrs.Yahara is a great karateka but this isnt fighting, its a points match with heavy contact allowed by appearance.
please do not mistake muay thai with kickboxing. kickboxing came from kyokushin karate which was influenced by muay thai. then it was sort of mixed with french savate but although it is a sport it is still different from sport muay thai
its as close to a real 1on 1 fight as you can do in training, what you spar with is what youll do in reality.Karate is too restrictive in rules and contact to be useful in that context.
hmm, nah I don't believe in "it's into their genes" the only difference between those people and others is how much they are willing to sacrifice to reach their goal. the only difference between successful people and non-successful people is that the successful people are willing to lose something to reach what they want while the non-successful people are wondering what they're doing wrong while sitting safely at home.
i disagree is he was allowed in MMA alot of people will b accidently knocked out if not crippled...look at his he truly practices the "the one hit kill" my theory, he had pretty much incorperated into his instincts, any challenger that takes him on gets injuried if not knocked out by strikes, my guess is any fighter: ufc or not that gets in range are as good as road kill unless they have very good plan for being in his circle
First of all I don't claim to be an expert, but after watching many tournaments I now understand why Funakoshi and other old instructors did not support tournament sparring. Not everyone has the skill of Sensei Yahara here. In tournaments practitioners hardly block because they're afraid it will be misinterpreted by judges as an opponents point. Also karateka are almost leaning backwards, so afraid to let the opponent get a point- developing a bad habit. karate teaches to drive energy forward
UFC is still a sport with rules. I don't think that Yahara Shihan as a professional body guard, is a sportsman, even though he used to compete. Lets face it, how often is a street fight one on one, wrestling on the ground is a sure way to get your head stomped in by ones opponents buddy. Real fighting karate transfers perfectly to the street. Change the gyaku zuki with the fist into a nukite attack, and check the results. If proper karate was allows in MMA there would be a lot of fatalities.
yes and if you only do them in kata without the padwork and sparring those knees and elbows are completely useless to you bcause you wont have the timing and power to make them effective. And guess what, the vast majority of karate schools do neither of those things.
I know exactly what you mean....to tell you the truth tournament sparring made me quit...the point system is trash...I got so many 3rd and 2nd places simply because 1. NO POINT! YOU HIT HIM TOO HARD AND A WARNING 2. Enemy Got A Point...Because Even If You Block It...It Doesn't Matter! 3. No Point Even Though You Hit Him 4 Times In The Stomach We Didn't See It Somehow! I'm not one to be scared I just dive in when I see an opening and go on a barrage of strikes and poitntsystem is useless for that
At the beginning of the video I do not know who is crazier, the guy standing and Mikio kick him in the head in full force ... I think it is not fair to present an attractive kick in such a way. Karate is not for brutalization! Regards.
VukSRB79 Although the kick look impressive, is from my perspective, done with full speed and power. Yahara was known by striking a little bit more the correct way.
you have to have grappling in any effective system as a fall back when things go wrong with your strikes, there is grappling in fairburns system ,but little to no ground grappling, thats its mistake, you dont chose to go to ground unless its single combat. There are no open hand strikes illegal in mma since it started, some targets are illegal. You dont practise those open hand strikes full contact in karate so they arent effectively trained. The grappling in karate is confined to standing.
ok hahaha none of this hapens like that the real life is alot faster and believe me you dont have time to jump around chairs and kick the best demostrations are the kumites between high level black belts where they rlly fight for points like in half vid. XD
I PRACTICE MMA AND SHOOKAN SINCE 20 YEARS for those who thinks that only mma is the only right way... think to this, in a real no rule fight any blu belt or better may defeat a lot of mma fighter with NUKITE in an eye. the swiftness of his strikes astound me.
no, really they do. my eyes are like this O_O
0:00-2:10 One of the best demo's ever! You can easily see a true master of martial arts.. Mikio Yahara! Thank you for posting!

I AGREE...THIS ART HERE IS SACRED AND MORE BEAUTIFUL
i wish they had some shotokan based contact tournament with mma gloves.
With that first dude was he like “bro just stand there while I record”, and then kick him in the face?
“I don’t have time I got so much things to do today”
“Nah, serious, just stand here it will only take a second relax”
There are few who practice karate like this, tough & painful but when life or limb are in danger, that is usually tough & painful because your survival depends on being tough & absorbing some pain.

@Troelsff That kata at 6:00ish is Unsu judging by the jump.

i completely agree with you i was reading up on kuimite in shotokan and it says that in kumite you are training to kill or cripple your opponent
It isn't about the belt that you wear or how long that you train but about the progression that you have made.
imo people shouldn't be awarded above 1st dan in under 10 years of training unless they literally train everyday and gain the experience in that way.

Yes, like him and like me.

did he really kill enemy yakuza members and if so for what reason were they after him? Yahara is awesome.
@my2opinion Wonder why :P the jump at 6:24 seems hard to perform
Which kata is he doing around 6:00 ?
Is sensei Richard Amos the other guy?
