(it is wisely written through out her character) h 18th century or 21st century = she dont hear it when others tell her -> her heroism comes off as HELPFUL but in a nutshell she is thinking of her position 1st. Kevin: she need him as a white person in that period Mom: she wants her mom back into 21st century; and leave the little girl alone in a dangerous time. Her mom & the little girl a freed people. DANA literally upset everybody's life she walks into. = the neighbors. her aunt/uncle the slaves the slave master yet she does her best to be bring heaven to all.. with full hell in her basket 😘no pun... because she has a tote bag w/ her all the time. at 1st i thought she was a typical anti-hero character... but i have wait since i did not read the book

It was so good but it made me mad that Kevin kept telling her to leave and she wouldn't listen. I did feel that her staying there was making things worse for the slaves.
Honestly I was constantly annoyed by her character. She would constantly do things that get herself and anybody else killed. Her uncle Even said it right " I'm tired of trying to helping someone who puts herself in danger"

(i'm only in epsiode 2) i was surprised that they went with her boyfriend getting taken with her - it made sense, logically, but was still a bold move. Hopefully they continue being bold but logical.
I seriously hope they bring this show back for another season! The sci-fi aspects along with it being a book adaptation is so good. I’m wondering if she goes back will he be an old man or passes away because he’s aging faster.

Dana really upsets me at times . I’m like what are you thinking ? She thought solely on emotions, which is why Kevin is there and she’s back at home. He expressed several times. He wanted to go , yet she didn’t. Not only that , it’s almost as if she forgot about the times she lived in (slavery) it was prohibited to read, among many other things she’s done . Which in a way was selfish for others , who don’t have the privilege to leave when things are hard. This show has left me on edge . I’m curious and anxious to see where it goes.

Even though I enjoyed the series, it did leave me wondering why she was trying so hard to save that spoiled little boy who seems destined to be the monster that is his father. She’s obviously in the future so maybe this little boy isn’t as destined to be her ancestor as she seems to believe. Her actions left a really good man in a world he finds abhorrent, just so she can ensure that the rape of her ancestor is fulfilled. I do not get that at all. I’ll get to book so I can get a better understanding.
I just finished the series point 2 seconds ago. Now I'm mad there isn't another episode. This series was fabulous. Of course infuriating parts but still good.
I know right??...I thought it was a glitch in my downloaded version...the sudden jump from the Police being in the Dana's house to her Sister there talking to Dana.....then the jump from Kevin and Alice being in the house with Alice holding a gun, to Weylin sudden there with three other men interrogating Kevin It didn't make sense...like there was a rush to close the season
As a lover of the book, I’m going to be honest I hated the changes made to the plot 💀 but I do think this was still an interesting show ! If I hadn’t had any book background knowledge I might’ve been able to enjoy it even a little bit more

KEVIN! I felt horrible when I saw he aged so much. He wanted to stay behind in L.A. and she grabbed him. They'd only known each other for 2 days--they already had sex--but it wasn't right how she pulled him in like that. He'll be changed by his environment and won't look at Dana the same way. On the other hand, he did talk to his sister about fate, was it? He also joked about traveling and the place being like a retreat. Bad mojo, right there!

Series is different than the book which I read twice, Octavia Butler is one of my favorite authors. I was skeptical about watching it but decided to give it an unbiased view. I'm pleasantly surprised. Although they made changes for television, season two is necessary and even a third season. The possibilities are endless due to the time travel aspect. Octavia, rest in power and I hope you're pleased. She has other books that would transfer greatly into movie or television formats as well.❤
This is such a good show and I had to go and read the book and listen to the audio. It is so different from the show. So you can read it and not feel like you are going to know what happens next. I highly recommend that you read the book. It is really good.
I'm surprised at how few people have reviewed this series online. I want to discuss episode 8 because it made me sick; quite literally. The scene with Kevin, Tom and Rufus in the club was disgusting and traumatizing.

I thought it was so good. As a fan of the book it stays true enough to the original while still making adjustments to keep it exciting to watch, with additional cliffhangers and tension
Oh gosh my dad was watching it and I was hooked it was so tense and intrusting. I hope the series will continue I was dying to see what is going to happen next. The cliff hanger left me baffled and I wanted to see what happen next.
We binged the entire season Such a cool concept but man I cried way too many times. I felt every emotion, feeling, verbal and physical abuse like it was happening to me The acting was top notch Bravo to cast and crew

Dana’s compassion and moreso desire to save everyone royally screwed with her and Kevin ever making it back to 2016. There was a lull where Kevin kept asking, “Can we go now?”, then lots and lots of waiting around (padding for runtime). Could this have worked as a 2hr film instead? Maybe.
So can was there a mistake because the Olivia said the last time she saw Dana was when she was two years old Dana now is what 24? How has it only been 11 years gone in? Is this a mistake?
In Episode 1, Olivia asks what year is it in Dana’s time. Dana says 2016. This confuses Olivia because only 11 or 12 years has passed for her and Dana was “barely two” when she left. Therefore Dana should only be a teenager. I think we have to chalk it up to the way time moves differently in the past and present. What’s confusing is: from Dana’s POV, time in the past goes by much quicker than in the present. Therefore, Olivia would have been in the past for MUCH longer than 11 years. BUT, since these jumps to the past didn’t occur until Olivia and Dana turned 26, that may have something to do with it. In fact, the first time we see Olivia (when Rufus is a baby), Olivia had to have just gotten there a year or so before Dana showed up to roll Rufus over in the crib and save him. So Olivia and Dana were around the same age that night. Anyway, I don’t think it was a mistake, I think it has something to do with the age of 26 being the launchpad for the time jumps and therefore, Dana couldn’t have gone back before that age. The book may answer this question, but I haven’t read it.
I read the book a long time ago so it’s been blurry from my memory. But I think Dana was more mature in the book, maybe because the setting was in the 70s instead of 2016. The tv character looks so young at times ( not a bad thing ) but it definitely correlated with her immature and irrational actions. Yes Kevin is white and will have a more suitable experience than her but I was pissed that he was left there. It’s kind of ironic as a black viewer I have more sympathy for the white character in a slavery show
I loved the show. Dana gave me anxiety, but I’ve had the book for years and I think I never finished it. Deff reading it soon while I wait for season 2 🤯
I'm sticking to back to the future rules/laws. Wouldn't them going back in time in the 1st place mess with the time quantum...meaning the chain of events happened. Once you've changed the past you alter the future. & I remember on one episode her mother saying she can't go back because she's from a different time yet either way it goes it would still be present day for her as well because she never died. I'm just upset that we didn't get to see her mother in the end, alot of scenes where cut. was pretty disappointed, after being really excited to see how they adapt Butler's beautiful book. They seemed to cut important scenes particularly in the final episode what happens with Dana & the cops? Why is Kevin's sister crying to the neighbors? Where is Minnie? How does Tom get to Kevin at Olivia's house? How does that lead to Kevin and Alice on horses? Really underwhelming storytelling, and little exploration of the context
The only answer I have for you is : I don’t think Tom was actually looking for Kevin there but to see if Olivia and Dana reappeared at her house since they both disappeared while getting whipped

I don’t find Dana annoying like everyone else does but coming you have to admit her teaching that boy how to read with the door wide open like that was extremely dangerous. Forget her safety at this point She could’ve gotten him in big danger.
This show is unbelievable... and NOT in a good way. Two people travel back and forth in time messing up everyone's life. They take their misplaced 21st Century notions back and time and get people killed. This should have been a comedy. This show made me angry because the characters were hollow, clueless and soulless.
Ngl I had that head-slapping moment when Dana told the pregnant slave she shouldn't be overexerting herself. And the lady goes, don't you think I know that? I literally busted out laughing. Come on now, she's talking like she knows better, but had the nerve to say that to a slave? Soooo weird. There are a lot of weirdly comedic moments in this show despite how dark it's intended to be.
The Show is really good but I really have to say Dana was so naive to think she can just save a whole Plantation do and say whatever she wants also dragging Kevin with her when he several times said he wanted to leave that it effects him deeply its almost like she didn't care and gave him attitude for it ..felt so sorry for him because at the end you could see that Alice is older now so he Stuck over there for years and will be a complete changed Person just because he wanted to be there for Dana..Her being there made everything worse tbh and I don't think Kevin will recover from this Experience.. I really really hope there will be a Season 2 Kevin needs to get back home!!!!
Dana in the book is a little bit more careful, having been alive during the Civil rights Era. I think her being out of touch does match up with traveling back from 2016 but they were a bit heavy handed with it. I kinda hate that Kevin is no longer her husband coz in the book he grabbed onto her and went back hoping to protect her and she was actually pretty upset that she took him back and worried she might leave him behind.
It was really good. Can’t wait until the next season. I bought the book the day after I watched the last episode. The book is completely different. So I still have something to look forward to.

I love shows with creepy, unexplainable alternate realities. So this show held me intrigued enough to finish the season despite almost turning me completely off several times because Dana and Kevin were just...so...damn...dumb. Also, I'm not one of those people who believe feminism and the gay agenda are erasing all masculinity from society...that's a bit extreme. But there is a current trend in Hollywood that's been building for a few years now, and Kevin was hands down the biggest WAP in cinematic history. I love a strong female character, and I don't ever want it to go back to where the woman is just the helpless "damsel in distress". But these soft ass men in some of these recent shows and movies make it real hard for me to watch sometimes.
@@ellebaby825 yeah I read it. It was a good read. In the book, she didn’t have the support system like she has in the show other than her husband. Which I found more heartbreaking because they both were struggling in their own way to revert back into their time of living.
It shouldn’t be a surprise that Alice was the one that was more focused on being protected toward the end, because that is literally the one of the people in the book that Dana needs to protect from the beginning.

I'm so at a point where I'm like show me anything Pre Slavery. There are so many stories to tell that paint a different perspective than just Drama. It feels a bit like a Dead Horse dragged over the finish line of a genre attributed and apparently adopted by black people themselves to be represented as...I think we need a paradigm shift in our consensus and assessment skills as to what we're symbolising in limiting ourselves to this narrative. This we've all dipped our teabags in the Trauma to the T. There are so many stories pre slavery we could be telling. Like show me a movie about black egyptians so that ET (Elizabeth Taylor and the Brady Bunch don't show up in Every reference for Egypt edutainment wise or even Miseducational.) Or Mansa Musa or the Moors Kumari Kandam Melanesia and the Origins of Afro Asiatics. Like the entire Apostolic Library formally the Vatican Archives are Full with history that is not Allowed for mainstream audiences for one and one reason only. What it would reveal would shatter the white world's view on Black people's contributions to humanity and their significance in that role and would devalue the conservatism that justifies a white Cleopatra while a black one is offensive. There's this invisible boundary that is mainstream narrative that doesn't want to be crossed and that's exactly why we should.
My theory is that Kevin will grow more and more resentful towards Dana and probably other black people. I say that because you have to remember he is a white man from the year 2016 & stuck in the 1800’s with no money, family, friends, home, & an alcohol addiction. He will have to fit in with the times and might lose himself in the process. Also, Kevin even expressed to Dana that they shouldn’t stay too long cause everything that is happening could “change them”. I just hope they both understand what happened is technically neither one of their fault.😢 This show is SO good I’m throughly invested, even with the awful cliffhanger!😅
You're assuming that bc he's wht. Kevin seems to generally have a good heart, which is why it seems the 1800s were worse to him than her. I'd go as far as to say he's much kinder than Dana, who just seems to be selfish. She only helps Rufus to ensure her own survival. Everyone around her is a slave but she has no problem endangering their lives, by helping Winnie escape, taking books. She does things blatantly w out regard for consequences, as I she's in 2016 not 1816.

Of course Kevin is a good guy with a great heart but with each episode progressing you can tell that Kevin is changing the more he stays in the 1800’s. He even recognizes and states that himself! Just because Kevin is kind hearted doesn’t mean he is without faults. In the very last scene when he’s on the horse traveling with the slaves that are walking beneath him Kevin has this look of angst/betrayal that goes beyond just “faking it to make it because of time period.” It’s also symbolic of the fact that Kevin and Dana’s relationship dynamics have changed since. I do agree that Dana is very selfish and acts without thinking things through. There was something else that happened in the show which is why I previously stated that it was technically neither one’s fault of why they were split up and couldn’t communicate with each other at some point. But it’s been 8 months since I’ve watched the series so I can’t remember much to explain further.

He was not expected to behave as and essentially become a slave. He was just poor, which isn’t that bad for a white person at the time. Like as a black person in that situation, you can tell even in the series that most of the slaves are thinking of themselves first because that’s what’s expected. For Kevin he’s able to give us a shit about other people because his life isn’t always on the line when he makes a mistake. It was a good show. Some changes I hated and almost didn’t watch this….however some changes I liked. Eventually I enjoyed the annoying neighbors lol😂 I am hoping they renew and give us more sooner than later

Dana annoyed me with some of her decisions, I felt bad for Kevin being drug into Dana's mission. This was a decent show, I now must invest in the book.

KEVIN! I felt horrible when I saw he aged so much. He wanted to stay behind in L.A. and she grabbed him. They'd only known each other for 2 days--they already had sex--but it wasn't right how she pulled him in like that. He'll be changed by his environment and won't look at Dana the same way. On the other hand, he did talk to his sister about fate, was it? He also joked about traveling and the place being like a retreat. Bad mojo, right there!

Series is different than the book which I read twice, Octavia Butler is one of my favorite authors. I was skeptical about watching it but decided to give it an unbiased view. I'm pleasantly surprised. Although they made changes for television, season two is necessary and even a third season. The possibilities are endless due to the time travel aspect. Octavia, rest in power and I hope you're pleased. She has other books that would transfer greatly into movie or television formats as well.❤
This is such a good show and I had to go and read the book and listen to the audio. It is so different from the show. So you can read it and not feel like you are going to know what happens next. I highly recommend that you read the book. It is really good.
I'm surprised at how few people have reviewed this series online. I want to discuss episode 8 because it made me sick; quite literally. The scene with Kevin, Tom and Rufus in the club was disgusting and traumatizing.

It is a shame because it did have a real good story to it!
Dana’s compassion and moreso desire to save everyone royally screwed with her and Kevin ever making it back to 2016. There was a lull where Kevin kept asking, “Can we go now?”, then lots and lots of waiting around (padding for runtime). Could this have worked as a 2hr film instead? Maybe.
So can was there a mistake because the Olivia said the last time she saw Dana was when she was two years old Dana now is what 24? How has it only been 11 years gone in? Is this a mistake?
In Episode 1, Olivia asks what year is it in Dana’s time. Dana says 2016. This confuses Olivia because only 11 or 12 years has passed for her and Dana was “barely two” when she left. Therefore Dana should only be a teenager. I think we have to chalk it up to the way time moves differently in the past and present.
What’s confusing is: from Dana’s POV, time in the past goes by much quicker than in the present. Therefore, Olivia would have been in the past for MUCH longer than 11 years. BUT, since these jumps to the past didn’t occur until Olivia and Dana turned 26, that may have something to do with it. In fact, the first time we see Olivia (when Rufus is a baby), Olivia had to have just gotten there a year or so before Dana showed up to roll Rufus over in the crib and save him. So Olivia and Dana were around the same age that night.
Anyway, I don’t think it was a mistake, I think it has something to do with the age of 26 being the launchpad for the time jumps and therefore, Dana couldn’t have gone back before that age. The book may answer this question, but I haven’t read it.

I read the book a long time ago so it’s been blurry from my memory. But I think Dana was more mature in the book, maybe because the setting was in the 70s instead of 2016. The tv character looks so young at times ( not a bad thing ) but it definitely correlated with her immature and irrational actions. Yes Kevin is white and will have a more suitable experience than her but I was pissed that he was left there. It’s kind of ironic as a black viewer I have more sympathy for the white character in a slavery show
I loved the show. Dana gave me anxiety, but I’ve had the book for years and I think I never finished it. Deff reading it soon while I wait for season 2 🤯

I'm sticking to back to the future rules/laws. Wouldn't them going back in time in the 1st place mess with the time quantum...meaning the chain of events happened. Once you've changed the past you alter the future. & I remember on one episode her mother saying she can't go back because she's from a different time yet either way it goes it would still be present day for her as well because she never died. I don’t find Dana annoying like everyone else does but coming you have to admit her teaching that boy how to read with the door wide open like that was extremely dangerous. Forget her safety at this point She could’ve gotten him in big danger.
This show is unbelievable... and NOT in a good way. Two people travel back and forth in time messing up everyone's life. They take their misplaced 21st Century notions back and time and get people killed. This should have been a comedy. This show made me angry because the characters were hollow, clueless and soulless.
Ngl I had that head-slapping moment when Dana told the pregnant slave she shouldn't be overexerting herself. And the lady goes, don't you think I know that? I literally busted out laughing. Come on now, she's talking like she knows better, but had the nerve to say that to a slave? Soooo weird. There are a lot of weirdly comedic moments in this show despite how dark it's intended to be.
The Show is really good but I really have to say Dana was so naive to think she can just save a whole Plantation do and say whatever she wants also dragging Kevin with her when he several times said he wanted to leave that it effects him deeply its almost like she didn't care and gave him attitude for it ..felt so sorry for him because at the end you could see that Alice is older now so he Stuck over there for years and will be a complete changed Person just because he wanted to be there for Dana..Her being there made everything worse tbh and I don't think Kevin will recover from this Experience.. I really really hope there will be a Season 2 Kevin needs to get back home!!!!

Dana in the book is a little bit more careful, having been alive during the Civil rights Era. I think her being out of touch does match up with traveling back from 2016 but they were a bit heavy handed with it. I kinda hate that Kevin is no longer her husband coz in the book he grabbed onto her and went back hoping to protect her and she was actually pretty upset that she took him back and worried she might leave him behind.
It was really good. Can’t wait until the next season. I bought the book the day after I watched the last episode. The book is completely different. So I still have something to look forward to.

I love shows with creepy, unexplainable alternate realities. So this show held me intrigued enough to finish the season despite almost turning me completely off several times because Dana and Kevin were just...so...damn...dumb. Also, I'm not one of those people who believe feminism and the gay agenda are erasing all masculinity from society...that's a bit extreme. But there is a current trend in Hollywood that's been building for a few years now, and Kevin was hands down the biggest WAP in cinematic history. I love a strong female character, and I don't ever want it to go back to where the woman is just the helpless "damsel in distress". But these soft ass men in some of these recent shows and movies make it real hard for me to watch sometimes.

@@ellebaby825 yeah I read it. It was a good read. In the book, she didn’t have the support system like she has in the show other than her husband. Which I found more heartbreaking because they both were struggling in their own way to revert back into their time of living.
It shouldn’t be a surprise that Alice was the one that was more focused on being protected toward the end, because that is literally the one of the people in the book that Dana needs to protect from the beginning.
The book is much better then the series but to see it on the big screen very enjoyable hopefully we get atleast 2 more seasons would love to see the modern changes of the show

My theory is that Kevin will grow more and more resentful towards Dana and probably other black people. I say that because you have to remember he is a white man from the year 2016 & stuck in the 1800’s with no money, family, friends, home, & an alcohol addiction. He will have to fit in with the times and might lose himself in the process. Also, Kevin even expressed to Dana that they shouldn’t stay too long cause everything that is happening could “change them”. I just hope they both understand what happened is technically neither one of their fault.😢 This show is SO good I’m throughly invested, even with the awful cliffhanger!😅
You're assuming that bc he's wht. Kevin seems to generally have a good heart, which is why it seems the 1800s were worse to him than her. I'd go as far as to say he's much kinder than Dana, who just seems to be selfish. She only helps Rufus to ensure her own survival. Everyone around her is a slave but she has no problem endangering their lives, by helping Winnie escape, taking books. She does things blatantly w out regard for consequences, as I she's in 2016 not 1816.

I’m theorizing my opinion based on all the context clues the show provided. Maybe you should pay more attention. Of course Kevin is a good guy with a great heart but with each episode progressing you can tell that Kevin is changing the more he stays in the 1800’s. He even recognizes and states that himself! Just because Kevin is kind hearted doesn’t mean he is without faults. In the very last scene when he’s on the horse traveling with the slaves that are walking beneath him Kevin has this look of angst/betrayal that goes beyond just “faking it to make it because of time period.” It’s also symbolic of the fact that Kevin and Dana’s relationship dynamics have changed since. I do agree that Dana is very selfish and acts without thinking things through. There was something else that happened in the show which is why I previously stated that it was technically neither one’s fault of why they were split up and couldn’t communicate with each other at some point. But it’s been 8 months since I’ve watched the series so I can’t remember much to explain further.

He was not expected to behave as and essentially become a slave. He was just poor, which isn’t that bad for a white person at the time. Like as a black person in that situation, you can tell even in the series that most of the slaves are thinking of themselves first because that’s what’s expected. If you don’t have a kid there, you might not give a shit about anyone else there because survival is what matters. For Kevin he’s able to give us a shit about other people because his life isn’t always on the line when he makes a mistake. I think about the only reason he got stuck in a tough situation is because white people hate Black people so much that they can’t even stand a white person not hating Black people. It was a good show. Some changes I hated and almost didn’t watch this….however some changes I liked. Eventually I enjoyed the annoying neighbors lol😂 I am hoping they renew and give us more sooner than later

Dana annoyed me with some of her decisions, I felt bad for Kevin being drug into Dana's mission. This was a decent show, I now must invest in the book.
