    Listen , Dana had my blood pressure rising . I might’ve called her dumb a few times , cause what are you thinking ?
    She’s reading , and teaching others to read . Like sis aren’t you like 26? I’m sure you’ve had some history classes .
    And not only that , she was extremely selfish . Almost as if the rules didn’t apply to her. Just because she can leave and come back .
    I didn’t like how Kevin asked over and over to leave yet she wanted to stay . Now he’s stuck there.
    Dana can be completely inconsiderate when putting other slaves in danger . I don’t know if sis thought she was Harriet or something. But , even Harriet had a plan and worked better at this !

    I loved Dana. I thought the lead actress (Mallori Johnson) did a PHENOMENAL job of portraying the character in a very real way that was exactly how I envisioned when reading the book. She was portraying the navigation of an extremely impossible circumstance in a very REAL way. • @rosed4304
    @rosed4304 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thank You Ma'am! I was thinking the same thing about Dana all the way through the series! Dana has no sense! Also, being that she is from 2016, I would be googling things immediately on getting back to my place! From the names of people, and places to underground railroad movement and printing this stuff out to take back in time etc... ALL THE THINGS! So, I think that they can take things back in time with them but the clothes, objects and people that aren't from their time literally just vanish, EXCEPT for Dana's mom(maybe because she is a traveler like Dana?) since they are not from 2016 they can't bring them back through with them but they are also displaced from their time. Kevin has no sense either, he knows how this whole things works with calling Dana back in time, he shoulda found Rufus and scared used Olivia's poison trick to get him to summon Dana back! So, I am wondering if we will get to find out where Dana's grandmother went, I believe she was also a traveler, except who called to her and where did she go? Also, who called Olvia back in time, I am assuming it was one of Rufus' dead siblings? I also know there was mention that there was a family connection on both Dana's maternal and paternal side of the family, so did both her father's and mother's ancestors come from this plantation? If can go back and get Kevin, and bring him back to 2016... can you imagine.... he will be an old man that lived all this life and when he comes back will go back to being a man in his 20s again with only a day or two passing?!?!? Talk about messing with your head?

    Haven’t finished the series but I read the book!
    -Carrie is mute, not deaf, so she has to communicate with sign language but she can understand what people say
    -Kevin’s sister is married to a rich older guy who’s also super racist
    -also Dana is smarter in the book IMO. she teaches the kids how to read but she’s really cautious about it (only uses scrap paper and burns it when she’s done) & she gets punished badly when she’s caught
    -also Kevin and Dana are married in the book and tbh I like that better bc even if it shows them growing apart bc of the separate lives they have to take on in the 1800s (especially after Kevin gets stuck there 😢) they stay together and they symbolize a strong bond and love between white & black people united against racism

    I’m glad you liked it.
    I had high hopes and didn’t mind the modernization of the timeline but the nonsensical changes to both plot and underlying message made me nauseous.
    Dana should not be an idiot like she is portrayed in this version (the actress is great though) and the decision to make Kevin such a white night well meaning dude is super gross.
    I dunno - I have a lot of thoughts - it wasn’t just Dana that didn’t make sense, historically all of the characters were given wildly insulting character motivations and the whole script was a mess.
    That said, it’s been 20 plus years since I read Kindred and this show at least made me go dig through boxes in the garage to find my copy of Octavia Butler’s genius book.

    • @kittenbraden9800
      @kittenbraden9800 ปีที่แล้ว

      About the entitlement - I understand what you (and others) mean, and I feel it on an individual level, but I read it as a metaphor. As a Black woman, Dana has no choice in getting pulled back and facing the brutal history of slavery, whereas Kevin has the luxury of not engaging with that heavy topic. I'm white and I read it as "white people need to face this, too, whether we like it or not. It's uncomfortable and painful, but it's our shared history." It made even more sense to me when I read that Kevin and Dana are actually married in the novel. My partner's history is something I cannot ignore, especially if I love them and care about them, it is imperative that we face this together. My partner and I actually are from different cultures, and she is racialised. I am disabled. We have a lot of this pain to share with each other and process together, and it can be depressing af. But for me, this is love and care. This is true. I don't know the details of the novel yet, but I'm curious to see how this is approached there. I might be wrong with my take after all 😆 Or it might be shown that Kevin loses himself in the process. I didn't quite know what to make of that last scene with him riding. I hope season 2 ends up happening, too

    Such a cool concept and it makes you think what would you do 🤔
    Dana can act and cry wow 🤩😎
    Love the entire cast
    Bravo cast and crew 👏🏾
    Edit: good questions
    -Don’t know where the first slave catcher went to, like you said, he just disappeared because he’s not from 2016
    -I believe they made that slave rape the other slave for entertainment and if he didn’t accomplish it, there were a few more lined up, so she had to fight as long as she could until raped, then the next, then the next
    -Dana packed the cell phone from the bedroom when she was getting ready to run

    Okay so I had to read to the book . After reading I still have questions . Like the main one is who saved The little boy before ? Like obviously this story has played out . ( in the book Dana mother is not a factor ) . Secondly what happens if she refuses? Lastly why this one particular ancestor. Like is there unfinished business or something . Like I hope the series answers my question. Like is this something that her soul is going to do FOREVER? Also , is it a power that she has or is it a power that he has or both . Is the reason she’s able to go back to the future because of Rufus ? Like is he secretly repaying the favor or no? Someone help me out

    @jaishanese loved your enthusiasm, so funny. Please read Kindred, it was my absolute favorite novel. I liked the changes they made for the series. My biggest question was if Rufus is an ancestor on her paternal side that Dana needed to save in order for her to be born, why was her mother there? Rufus isn’t Olivia’s relative. Kevin should of played it off and been like this my main slave, she gotta stick by my side type shyt. SMH. Then we see Sara was a gangsta. She gettin rid of descendants and setting up Winnie, poisoning folks, goddddayuum. She tried to warn Dana. Mannn, all I was thinking about was when Dana gonna get whipped, because I have to mentally prepare myself because I knew it was comin. I feel like the point they were trying to drive with Dana's personality is the point that she has a very modern way of thinking which was harmful for THAT time to the slaves. Like many people, example Kanye West with the "Slavery was a choice" Mindset. It shows how oblivious, inconsiderate, naive and for lack of a better word... Stupid those that think that way about what slavery was! Everybody feels like if they were back in those times the easy answers they have today would be the best way to solve those problems and then poof! Slavery would have ended.🙄 It was never that simple. She exudes the ignorance of people of today who cannot fully understand what it was like to live that life. Sarah was traumatized and wanted revenge. That is a natural human reaction. I feel like Sarah gave the reality of the situations. We get this narrative that slaves had their children taken and sold or killed and moved on merrily with life on masters plantation and that was not the case. Sarah gave a raw reality of what some slaves did as revenge and a way to survive and in that it was very hard for Dana and Olivia to understand so they saw Sarah as a mean person. No, Sarah was damaged in every way possible. This series was the best I've seen this year and I plan on buying the book.

I'm so struggling to get thru this series on Hulu hoping it gets better but the ignorance of Dana and Kevin (who is her husband in the book) is driving me crazy because they walk around clueless, why are they both simple, one dimensional characters. It's like dumb and dumber up to episode 5. I think I may tap out on the series, this screenplay sucks. Or is it the fault of screen writer, maybe because a man adapted the story, this sister wrote.

    I binged the series, and just finished reading the book. I kind of like some of the changes the show made to the book. Both the book and the series left me wondering why Dana was so adamant about saving that spoiled brat “Rufus”. The book kind of left me feeling like there was just unnecessary torture to have someone experienced slavery just their ancestral lineage continued. I did not mind too much that Dana and Kevin were not married in the tv series as not too much time was spent in the book on their marriage either (yes they’ve been married a while but not very much was stated about their marriage to make a difference to me).
