Don't tell Management, but in the mid 80's when I was about 12 years old and staying at the Speedway Motel with my parents, a maintenance person let us into Mary Human's suite to take a look at the view. Just another of the many things that brainwashed me as a kid into loving the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. See you back there in 52 days.
Mr. Boles Is an amazing person and makes me happy to visit the track. He really cares and makes it personal. I took my job 12 years ago, which is just a mile east of the track just to hear the cars in May. Thanks Doug and all of the others who make IMS The best place in the world. Looking forward to my 25th race come May 29th 2022
I met Carroll Shelby in one of these Turn 2 suites back in the late 80s/early 90s. I was setting up some video gear in the Peterson Publishing suite, when this guy comes in and starts chatting with the woman managing the suite. It was just the three of us in there, we all chatted for about 45 minutes, then he left. THEN I found out who I'd been chatting with! I've never been starstruck, I was so surprised I didn't recognize him that day. Anyway, he seemed like a genuine guy without any need to proclaim his fame or importance.
Do you mean the "mouse house" outside Turn 2? (Basically what used to be the motel parking lot) Unfortunately it was torn down in late 2020. There was definitely a ton of history there, and I believe the house even predated the speedway, but I'm guessing there was a good reason why it was torn down without much fan fare. Perhaps it leaked or needed a ton of work. It would be cool to know more of the history. I know Mari Hulman George took that as her residence during the month of May during her tenure of ownership.
@@v12tommy As I recall she had rescue Greyhounds in the fenced area... as I remember, visually the home exterior, grounds/fencing was golf course immaculate.
Beautiful! The era was unprecedented and unlike anything we presently experience. I feel sorry for today's generation to have missed such great decades of the past. But here's to making great memories, great new memories, in this hotel. It kind of makes you torn between should there be a remodel or keep it like it is
I stayed in one of those first-floor rooms back around 2007-2008 (when they were still renting them out as part of the Speedway Motel); very affordable, if you didn't mind the retro decor!
I honestly thought those suites would be for the drivers or the families of the drivers but makes sense for any track personal. Still kind of cool to see a tour of the facility. A neat perk for the Colts players to see the race in that suite. My guess is those suites must go for a $1000 plus on race day but would be cool to see qualifying in one of those suites for sure. Being on the 3rd floor for the Indy GP would be awesome look at those S curves put that on my Christmas list.
Truly a shame they demo'ed the Speedway Motel, Coffee Shop/Diner, meeting rooms. It possessed the greatest 60's hip vibe... in the 80's it was viewed as tacky... thus the wrecking ball. Myself, I loved the place, primarily the main building, dining and meeting rooms, and less so the motel room clusters. If it was still intact and in great shape, it could have huge appeal. Craft beer, martini 60's hipster bar w/adjacent Steakhouse with golf course views. With the break out meeting rooms, they could utilize those for engagement announcements in a little less sterile environment than the normal PR location.
A few years ago I noticed that the gentleman sitting beside me in the southeast vista was wearing a lanyard with turn 2 suite credentials. I asked him why he was in the grandstand instead of the suite, and he replied that the view from the SE vista was better.
Suites, yes; rooms, not so much -- when they were still operating as a motel. I think they stopped that when the motel was torn down and now the rooms are invited guests only.
No repaving that I know of, but I believe they put down a sealer of some kind in October. If I remember right, it has something to do with weepers seeping up through the bricks and into the asphalt.

Been in those in 'Community Day'❤
Had the opportunity back in the 90's to be invited in A.J.'s suite. Fantastic view.

1:19 "toon two"
Few people left that know the turn 2 VIP suites were built by the IMS
maintenance crew. They did the majority of their own construction back then.
Great series about my favorite place in the world
I stayed in the Speedway Motel when I was enroute to North Carolina when I was on vacation one year. IMS is a great place.
Cool tour! Doug is the best Ambassador the Speedway has.
I do miss the old Speedway motel. Could you maybe do a video on the little Hulman house outside turn 1? Maybe a little history and a tour. Thank You!

The only time I got to be in turn two suites which I was invited by my sponsor Pepsi when I was midget car driver
Doug, Roger’s IMS is awesome, but…Why are we struggling to hear your words over the nonsensical “Background music?”
Renting those, is it expensive?

I'm surprised at how dated those first floor rooms look. Even "budget" motel chains have advanced beyond that '70s décor.
take lucks poster down
It looks like a repave job on the track, very dark surface.
I was thinking that too but haven't heard of them repaving the track.

Yes, they're calling it a surface penetrant.
