Makita does focus on ergonomics, but their reliability is far better than their competitors. I got sucked into the Milwaukee circle jerk, and ALL of them have trigger problems. Further, only their impact drivers are low enough on power to bother me. I have noticed no power difference between my LXT, 998, and 2804.

I own both LXT and XGT lineup. Bought on my b-day that XGT drill (HP001GZ global number) set with the fast charger and two 2.0Ah batteries. Got from Makita a 3rd 2.0Ah for like 50 cent as a promotion campaign. XGT have one thing that LXT dont have apart from power - its safety modules hidden in them, which with an adapter allow you to lock batteries and tools to work only with each other and also check the state of your tools and batteries. So in case of someone having a taste in your tools, they will take quite expensive paperweight.
I'm on the LXT platform and happy with the few tools I have of Makita, although this XGT drill would be only upgrade I 'd really probably want as their LXT platform tools are so good, quality in so many ways and not all about power. Reminds me of one of the greatest advertising slogans, "Power is nothing without control" -Pirelli.
You are right... the LXT tools are great. I think the XGT will really shine on bigger tools. If you don't have a need for those then I think you will be happy there. I just hope that the LXT continues to get attention in the future. That's really the only concern I have with the LXT currently.
@@TinkerWithTools Oh absolutely. I hope they dont start to phase out the LXT line. I'd say, keep the LXT system and if they need to, get rid of CXT. Then adapt the lighter/smaller tool system using LXT battery platform. That gives a simpler two systems choice.
It’s just a damn shame they refused to go past the 6.0 Ah on the 18 volt batteries. I love my ole’ corded Makita grinders. The cordless ones deserve higher Amp hour batteries. And yes i know they have the 18X2, but seriously, not in a grinder. I have a couple of the saws in 36 volt, but again, more runtime would be welcome. I like the electronic clutch for one reason. When you screw something that requires not all that consistent torque, you have the option to drive it a little further after it cuts out. The mechanic one will just keep slipping.
@davidblahota5655 I'm looking at getting this drill for the electronic clutch, the noise that the mechanical clutch makes is annoying sometimes, especially inside a room.
the point of a clutch is to limit torque to a certain amount. You're saying you like the electronic clutch because sometimes it doesn't limit torque. Interesting.
@@CarltonGauss Yeah, a hand drill does not operate in all that consistent conditions. You would have to turn the limiting off for a single screw with q mechanical one to drive it further once it does not want to go deeper with the setting.
@@davidblahota5655 This clutch just adds another layer of inconsistency though. Even if "press trigger again for a bit more torque" would be a nice feature; it's not really an intended feature here. It's just a consequence of the clutch being bad and responding late. My problem is that this late response is happening on the initial drive too, and it's impossible to control how much torque you're delivering to the fastener. Anyway, I'd much rather change the mechanical clutch setting than strip a screw head or a thread.
As a machinist who also does a lot of drilling by hand in metal, it would be so awesome if that knob could adjust the max speed when drilling. There's just too big of a step from 2600 to 650 rpm and even 650 is too fast for drilling anything bigger than about 3/8" in steel.
I’m constantly drilling 1” to 2” holes in 3/16” and 1/4” steel (canopy frames for Sonic Drive Ins) using Milwaukee bi metal hole saws. I recently switched from using a XPH14 to Makita’s 36 Volt Right Angle Drill which has a maximum speed of 350 RPM in speed 1 (low) and it seems to be the perfect speed for my purposes. I also have been using electric tape to close off the holes in the hole saw and then filling the hole saw with “Sonic Ice” (pellet, but crushed ice also works well). I then drill with moderate pressure, the melting ice cools and lubricates the hole saw and allows it to cut faster and cleaner without the mess of cutting lubricants and the ice is free in my case.
I also forgot to mention that using ice to keep the hole saw cool I usually get more than 100 holes out of a hole saw which saves som serious money over time.
Bought the combo set with extra batteries. like you said impact was good, the hammer drill awe inspiring. Especially on larger hole saw or diameter bit holes. Not that much bulkier than the LXT (18 volt) Selling my mid range PH12 combo set. Going after XGT OPE now, oh boy, ( rabbit hole!).
This drill has been tempting but I already have the Metabo HPT 36v hammer drill. I do have a couple 2.5 xgt batteries and the rear handle so I will eventually pick one of these up when I find a good deal probably.

The recent sales/battery promotions that they have had were the best deals I have seen on them. Hoping for good stuff at Black Friday. And for the stacked lithium it is on the list of things to bring to the channel.
Flex wins vs XGT if your looking for raw power and anti kickback go with Flex. If you want a smooth and still powerful drill get the Makita. Thank you dear friend! I live in Moscow, we sell Milwaukee, Dewalt and Makita, approximately the same price. I want to buy an impact screwdriver for home use and for the second week I could not decide. Your video helped me make a choice. (translated in google translator)
My issue is the lxt impact is the better impact. Why the 40v impact sucks is beyond me. So I got the 18v kit. Once I pick up the 40v track saw and get into the system I may get the drill only. Until then the lxt is solid drill.
Yeah, the impact drivers just don't seem to benefit from the higher voltage and that's not just Makita that is that way. The drill is a different story though.
I have a question about the Ridgid promo. The hammer drill combo is available in my store, but the ratchet and right angle impact are not. Since those are the most expensive free tool options, they are the ones that make the most sense for the hack. I don’t see any discrepancy in my cart, but can I just order everything from the website, pick up the hammer drill combo, and have the free tools shipped to the store?
I have never done it that way. I have ordered it all and then later just taken back what what I don’t need. I have never tried to split the delivery method if you will.
@@TinkerWithTools The website is telling me that I can go to the store and get the combo, but the ratchet and right angle impact, which are the most expensive options, have to be shipped. The only way to do the same method for everything is to have it all delivered to my house, and I don’t trust that nobody will steal anything.
I guess I should have worded my question differently. What do you think of the LXT combo at Home Depot? The reason I’m considering it is because, with the hack, the combo becomes $193 once you return the “free tools.”
Getting that tool at that price will be about as low as you will find it. I love the combination of the two. The impact driver will be one of the nicer (but not most powerful) impacts you will ever use. The drill is good but isn't class leading.
@@TinkerWithTools I know SOALZ hates Makita. I’m just trying to get the best possible set for my needs and budget. I don’t like the ergonomics of Milwaukee, so I’m looking at Ridgid and Makita. Dewalt and Flex are my other choices depending on the deals.
Actually the XTG should be safer with the anti kickback feature. The 18V did twist my wrist once when I didn't expect it. It hurt but I am ok but more safety is appreciated.
Sometimes on bigger spade bits especially, it binds as it's breaking through the last bit of wood. The whole is often drill, it just gets hung on up the material at the end.
I love the combo and the drill is worth being on XGT but the impact will lose to the LXT impact. While the combo get's you more for you money getting you a free battery, you also have a higher cost per tool on XGT that almost any other brand. So it has treadeoffs for sure.
Yes. Normally I love Makita impacts cause they are nice to use but I know they aren’t the strongest in the world. But with this drill I feel like I am getting the power I want and it’s great to use.
So conclusion Makita is better then Milwaukee? Asking because I want to buy a drill and don’t know which one to go for, should I go with Makita or with Milwaukee? Been seeing a lot of videos lately and Milwaukee seems to be more powerful then Makita

That "clutch" ruins the XGT. Unless you never do any driving, I'd stick with the 18v. The electronic clutch is not a clutch. It's just a sensor that cuts power when it detects that torque is too high. This is the fatal flaw: by the time the computer has detected the high torque, the high torque has already been applied to the fastener; making the clutch completely useless. A mechanical clutch prevents the torque from being transferred to the chuck in the first place.
@@TinkerWithTools I think the difference will be most obvious on machine screws; not wood. Measure the peak torque on each setting, and plot them on a chart. Or if you don't mind getting a rug burn: grip the clutch on the lowest setting with the chuck open, and go max speed. When the chuck closes, with the LXT, you'll hardly feel it. With the XGT, prepare for a good exfoliation.

I have the 18v and I love it. I like it better than my Dewalt 998 and my Milwaukee 2804.
Milwaukee have a gold standard sales team. Makita have the best tool, they know they dont need to talk themselves up.
I'd like some type of clutch or jam protection on the 18v
The screw setting is just a tad weak
Yeah, most companies offer something and so I would like to see them implement it. Perhaps in a next gen drill.
I mean the drill is nice and all, but I’m digging that shirt even more.
Good review
Thanks! It’s a personal favorite.
Are you going to give the bosch gsb18v-1330cn a go on this test?
It’s out of stock at the normal place I buy from. I can only buy the non hammer drill variant right now and I would rather get the full feature set for $10 more. It is on the list. Just a matter of when I can get it/have budget for it.
@@TinkerWithTools k that's awesome can't wait to see the reviews, keep up the good content
@@chrisschott6455 thanks!
That 40 volt is dab boy . I was not so invested in the 18 volt system it would be tempting.
I like both but man the 40 volt is crazy impressive.
Good video, thanks.
It's be nice that when you quote specs, you use European measurements for our European visitors such as Newton Metres for Torque. Thanks!
I’ll try to do it more often! And thank you!
Thank you dear friend! I live in Moscow, we sell Milwaukee, Dewalt and Makita, approximately the same price. I want to buy an impact screwdriver for home use and for the second week I could not decide. Your video helped me make a choice. (translated in google translator)
Glad it was helpful.
And would you say 18V is fine for home for use once in a while? Or just go 40V? I see more deals with 18V.
More than fine. The LXT drill
Isn’t a bad drill by any means.
Great tool! I found it to simply be the best.
Bought this for my daughter for her birthday, she loves it! 💗 🎉
It’s a really nice kit!
@@TinkerWithTools ya I was just playing. That was an awesome deal. Love the channel man!
Makita rules!!
You are correct. The XGT has it and it works pretty well.
Any idea why the XGT cut off at the end of the biggest spade bit hole.
Sometimes on bigger spade bits especially, it binds as it's breaking through the last bit of wood. The whole is often drill, it just gets hung on up the material at the end.
What’s your opinion of the XGT combo at Home Depot?
I love the combo and the drill is worth being on XGT but the impact will lose to the LXT impact. While the combo get's you more for you money getting you a free battery, you also have a higher cost per tool on XGT that almost any other brand. So it has treadeoffs for sure.
@@TinkerWithTools if you do the hack, the combo is $315, which makes it less than the Flex right now.
@@TinkerWithTools From the tear down video by Thibs, it looks like the XGT is actually made with Japanese parts, unlike the LXT.
Yeah, when I bought it was on sale for $399 with 4ah battery which i use on the rear handle saw.
Didn't know that about the breakdown. I'll have to check out the video.
i had mine for over a year for now, i mostly use it to drill holes in concrete and metal haha. it always does the job and i feel impressed everytime.
Yes. Normally I love Makita impacts cause they are nice to use but I know they aren’t the strongest in the world. But with this drill I feel like I am getting the power I want and it’s great to use.
Without the handle mine breaks 12 mm (1/2 inch) metal bits through thick steel like spaghetti.
How about drilling in metal ?
I’ll see if we could do some additional testing in the future.
So conclusion Makita is better then Milwaukee? Asking because I want to buy a drill and don’t know which one to go for, should I go with Makita or with Milwaukee? Been seeing a lot of videos lately and Milwaukee seems to be more powerful then Makita
I commented on of your other comments on another video and it will be a good choice either way. I have a head to head video where they are tested if you are interested in that.
@@TinkerWithTools thanks, I’ll def check it out! 🙌
I like what you're doing good video
Thanks! I appreciate it.
The family friendly no swearing is a big thing for me. Please keep your videos family friendly, I'd love to have a good tool review channel that doesn't swear.
Thanks and that won’t be changing any time soon.

Оба инструмента заслуживают уважение. XPH14 в линейке LXT топ. Имею в пользовании оба инструмента и оба показывают себя отлично на зимней рыбалке для сверления льда ледобуром толщиной больше метра. Привет с Чукотки!
Good analysis. Thank you from Australia!
I’ll have to do some testing between to the two to see how differently they operate
Something tells me the rug burn method won’t translate to video well. 😂
But tonight, we're gonna tacker the hammer drills
so 36 volt doesn't need as much ah as 18 volt.
don't use wh
@@kc0lif why not?
Makita delivers 🙌🏻
Wait why your handle of Xgt in the clip so short in my country the handle of xgt is so long same as the handle of xph07
The XGT had the same handle as the XPH14 here. They just have a different color metal where they connect.
The new bosch kinda beats the Makita 40V. That thing is also a beast. Neck to neck.
There isn't alot between the biturbo bosch and the 40v combi drill the 40v is smaller lighter and feels better to use
Do a good jobs , in drilling, do need to trying by myself 's, drill in different kind of speeds, different kind of bits, sizes, spent on wooden on and on ...driving in and out .( 2 by 4 inches! 4 by 4 inches ! Rounds nuts screw in and out ! Done .nice cut !
Thank you.
Makita ❤
I only buy makita, I know millwaukee will always beat makita in speed in raw power... but makita 40 v vs. millwaukee might be good
I have a video for that too if you are interested. I actually test the M18 Gen 4 vs the LXT and XGT.
FLEX tambien logro un increible taladro con solo 24 voltios. Makita tuvo que recurrir a 40v. Yo prefiero FLEX. Saludos
I appreciate the comment. Flex does have a strong drill. I prefer the ergonomics and refinement of the Makita still but that doesn't take anything away from what Flex was able to accomplish with their first generation.
good i repair #makita
well if it was in a platform i owned, or ANYONE at work owned... OR any of my relatives owned... i mite...MIGHT consider it, if it comes in a kit black friday WITH everything for the price of a year old bare tool, ... nah prolly not... SFMF
Waiting for the day Makita quietly starts phasing out 18v when 40v becomes more affordable.
That would be a great day. For XGT that is. It would suck about LXT though. They have a ton of tools there.
