Released in 1954, GODZILLA (Gojira / ゴジラ) is the first film in the longest-running film franchise in history. While it was released later in America as "Godzilla, King of the Monsters!," it is this original Japanese version which sets a more serious and somber tone set in post-war Japan. An allegory for mankind's own disregard for nature and one another, the film was a global success and helped propel its title character into pop culture history. This version was rarely seen until Godzilla's 50th anniversary in 2004 and is a must-see for anyone looking to explore the world of Godzilla.

First I loved Godzilla because "giant monsters fighting" and now I love Godzilla because "brilliant metaphor for mankind's recklessness and self-destructive ways... and giant monsters fighting."
I watched the '54 original when I was 10, so very early on, I viewed Godzilla through a serious lens. I do enjoy some of the films where he fights other monsters, mainly the early sequels directed by Ishiro Honda.
Thank you for the birth of the world's biggest icon.

The film that started it all.
We see Godzilla Minus One as an absolute masterpiece that makes Hollywood look like child's play. We see it as being cinematic and action packed, but at the same time being very tragic and emotional. It brings back the horror aspect as the tragedy known as WW2 is brought back to life. Godzilla is truly horrifying in this movie as he is a direct result of humanity's reckless and destructive path.
That is exactly what people felt when this movie came out in 1954.
The greatest monster movie of all-time...long live the king.

Super fortunate I got to meet Nakajima san right before he passed away. Met him in Pasadena at Monsterpalooza, took a picture with him and got his autograph on my 2-disc Godzilla (54) dvd

this movie definitely deserves to be respected
It might sound a bit funny when the trailer claims "featuring FX that surpass that of Hollywood" but it really was true. No U.S. monster movie made up to that point (or even many years that followed) showed the destruction & devastation of a city quite like 1954's "Godzilla". Okay maybe 1953's "War Of The Worlds" but that was technically not a kaiju movie (but still an awesome movie). So excited for "Godzilla: Minus One". December 1st can't get here soon enough!
This trailer is longer than the trailers of modern movies
I'm really Impressed everytime I see the original Godzilla. The amount of fear and despair. The way the Movie is shot and also the costume. I'm not a big fan of the old Godzilla costumes and maybe it's because this one is in black and white, So I can't really recognize it. But the suit, the face, everything just looks so darn great.

I have fond memories seeing the original Japanese version at the Wexner Center @ OSU when Rialto released it. It was amazing. Been a life long G-Fan. Thank you 🙏 to Toho and all the legends (Honda, Tsuburaya, Ifukube and Nakajima - to name a few) that brought Big G to life.
As a lifelong hardcore fan. All we ever wanted was a modern version of this. That's all we asked for ever.

The most bootlegged film in history. When this movie came out as a bang in Japan, the whisper around the world begged cinemaphiles to get their hands on it however they could. I love Toho, for sharing their world and helping my younger self to grow up and understand the world better.

It's interesting to go back to this noir monster film that depicted genuine suffering and grief so perfectly captured by Akira Ifukube's brilliantly poignant score. The subsequent films with monster battles are all good fun, but this one was, pardon the metaphor, a different animal.
It's amazing how far apart in tone and style Gojira is from every ofher movie in the franchise save for Shin or Minus One. It went from existential horror and drama to giant monster fights! Is there any other franchise with that radical of a discontinuity in theme and tone from movie to movie?

Godzilla, the undisputed King of the Monsters, began here 70 years ago. All that time, it’s still the best in the series.
To think this and Seven Samurai were released in the same year, it really showed that Japan and Toho in particular were able to not only stand toe-to-toe with American Cinema, but to occasionally surpass it.
See the godzilla mince one movie 2023 it is something just like this movie was about made with the special effects of today

@@shady200S my guy imdb is no different from rotten tomatoes so please don't use that site or any critic site as evidence. Not all classic movies are better and if we're talking effects, classic movies are outdated and are a product of their time. Gojira has a good story and acting but that does automatically mean every other godzilla movie afterwards didn't have good stories when they did.
Also godzilla breathes atomic breath not fire, godzilla's classic movies are every G film from 1954 to 2004 buddy
