For people who keep correcting the year in the title, to clarify, Godzilla King of the Monsters featuring actor Raymond Burr was released April 27th 1956. The original Godzilla under the title Gojira was released on November 3rd 1954.
I think Raymon Burr adds a lot to this film with his intensity, he took his role seriously and did a great job considering his footage is inserted. And superb work on the color here too.
That’s why I like the American version of Godzilla 1985 better, it brought him back to reprise his role as Steve Martin and explained exactly what Godzilla was.
I prefer the original by a pretty large margin, but I don't mind throwing on King of the Monsters every now and then. Hell, it was the version of the movie I grew up watching as a kid in the 90s.

The original has WAAAYY more of a somber and serious tone, his role, no offense, doesn’t seem to add anything more then the original doesn’t already have… during this scene, his unmoving and un-phased stare takes away from the horror that is better conveyed in the original. It seems unrealistic to me, which the original seemed to portray much better. He kinda adds that 1950-70’s emotionless American macho theme that doesn’t fit with the rest of the movies very deeply emotional undertone.

I think the character is in a state of shock. He spent the whole beginning of the film scoffing at the idea of a giant monster, yet here he comes face to face with that very thing... It probably took him a moment to register what was going on.
They definitely worked at it and it worked well enough to make Godzilla a huge success (and a household name) in both America and Europe. Who knows if a straight re-dub of "Gojira" would have had those same successful international results.....?
@@matthewpasternak8128 the original suit as well as the gyakushūgoji suit from raids again were both brown in color, not green or grey. They color him brown in this colorization, hence why the original comment commended them since that’s a little known fact.

Imagine Toho releasing a special colorized Editon of the original 54 film for a 70th anniversary release and this is how it would look Im absolutely impressed 😃
If someone were to tell me they’d be colorizing the original godzilla (yes I know this is KotM but it uses Gojira footage) I’d say blasphemy but you’ve genuinely impressed me, especially the night scenes with godzilla look really dark and intense, I love it
It may have to do with the quality of the film used between the two films. As I pointed out in the description, Gojira (1954) despite all that it does well, one of its few issues is the picture quality. Despite King Kong being older, since it was an American production, it had better quality film used, making the coloring process easier (Even though they'd still have to go frame by frame to color it). KotM (1956) seems to show this too, with the inserted American scenes with Raymond Burr looking much more clear and less film artifacts to get in the way of colorizing.
@@Nedziller Well still in the age we live in you would expect we would of gotten colorized versions of gojira and godzilla raids again since those two are the only godzilla films entirely in black and white.
ABSOLUTELY NOT, GOJIRA! I don't mind if they colorize the Raymond Burr version but there should be a HANDS OFF when it comes to the original unless it is to clean up the visuals and digitize the audio!
@GMK 2001 There was actually a colorized version of Gojira made for its Italian rerelease because the company bringing it over didn’t like that it was black and white. Although the coloring process was apparently rushed and not very good, and the prints have mostly vanished making it a lost film.
It’s his best roar. I can’t believe they dropped it in the later films. But then again Godzilla isn’t terrifying in the later films so this roar may not have fit. I still can’t picture a glove over an instrument creating that sound
Interesting video... must have been difficult to get the effects looking as good as you have made them, so congratulations! With that having been said, I think I still like the original B&W version better, simply because of its sombre mood. But keep trying, your first results were encouraging!
The most difficult part was trying to get the Colorizing AI to work properly, each attempt took 2 to 3 hours..... This was the best I could get it. I did colorize Godzilla's atomic breath myself though, cause the AI kept making it red rather than blue. And I agree, the mood set by the monochrome look in Gojira and Godzilla KotM (56) really add to the films favor. I really made this video cause I wanted to see Raymond Burr in color.

Will never forget the first time I saw this as a kid. It was the last movie to show at the end of Godzilla Bash '94, a marathon of the entire Shōwa era. After hours and hours of rooting for Godzilla, suddenly I'm met with scenes of gored bodies and smoldering ruins, sounds of thundering footsteps and heartstopping roars, and a soundtrack that painted a clear picture of terror. I realized immediatley, even then, that this is what Godzilla was meant to be. *Horror.* ...however, I'd been seeing Godzilla as an indestructible good guy for about twelve movies at this point, so seeing him die at the end still made me cry 😂
This five minute trailer is better than any complete Godzilla movie since. That's how good the original Godzilla was (With or without Raymond Burr)...PS..Great colorization.
Love to see The Day the Earth Stood still (1951). At least the opening credits and the first Gort vs the army. And the final scene. Great job on your videos!

It's kind of better off they didn't. The Black and White kind of adds onto the grim tone of the movie. While seeing it in color would've been quite amazing, it's pretty much perfect in black and white.
For Godzilla’s 70th anniversary, imagine if Toho was able to make a full ultra 8K remaster of the Original Godzilla, but ether colorized or even combine both the original and the Americanized cut all into 1 movie.

I’ve always had a great amount of respect for Raymond Burr for how he took his role incredibly seriously. American directors/producers wanted Godzilla to be comical/whimsical, but Burr wouldn’t allow it cuz he understood Godzilla for what he was supposed to symbolize. My hat is off to Mr. Burr for it
I explained in the description. I used an AI program called Deoldify on 11 minutes that I had selected to test the program.. This video was 11 minutes before, but it was hit with many copyright claims. Just fyi, if you want to use the program you'll need, Juypter notebook, I think ++C visuals, Python 3, and you'll need to upload whatever clip you want to colorize to the internet before using it.
I used to be bad at noticing things in old black and white movies when I was a kid, the very first time I ever saw this movie, I didn't initially notice Godzilla's actual footprints in the sand on the shore leading back to the ocean after he scared those villagers at the top of that cliff, and up until I was either 11 or 12 years old, I had always thought that the drag line from his tail on the shore WAS HIS FOOTPRINTS.
1:38 and 2:45 are the scariest in my opinion, the thought of being close to the monster and never being close to escape unless you are really stupid fast gives me bone chills…
Wow, Raymond Burr must have gone on a strict diet, as he played the rotund wife killer only two years before in Rear Window. They also aged him for that role, as he played a rather young man (which he was at the time) in Godzilla. I have to say he was taking kind of a chance in his Godzilla role, as he could have been forever typecast as a campy science fiction actor, which he of course was not. He actually made this movie work! I also have to say that it is amazing how the Japanese warmed up so much to American actors and the United States only 11 years after the end of World War Two!
Personally I don't like the idea of colorizing this film, the black and white really does work wonders in making this film more depressing and creepy, especially Godzilla's scenes, it's awesome seeing him so dark that you can make him out but he also kind of blends in with the background, Fear of the unknown type of stuff. That being said it is interesting to see attempts at colorizing the film, even if I would never watch it like that, that being said I'd never choose to watch the 1956 American version anyway, I have once or twice but this film really is its best in Japanese, a much darker toned film.

Nice colorization! But points detracted for cutting off the dialogue at 2:57, "He's leaving" followed by Dr. Yamane replying, "But he will be back" without opening his mouth lol!
I prefer the 54 version without these scenes because the film feels like it moves quicker and it's crazy how he just stomps into tokyo destroying it just gives it a mood.
The fact that this was done with something called "deoldify" is ironic, since the result looks like 2-strip technicolor, a process that was obsolete decades before Godzilla was made.
I just watched the original 1954 movie and I liked it way more than I expected to The effects still hold up quite well. I thought the older effects were better masked because of the original movie being in B&W but it looks great even in colour!
So, before Power Ranger used the original Sentai scene which was cut and pasted with scenes from saban with the Western Actor, there is Raymond Burr who got pasted into the original Gojira scene?

I just watched the original 1954 movie and I liked it way more than I expected to
The effects still hold up quite well.
I thought the older effects were better masked because of the original movie being in B&W but it looks great even in colour!
I never saw the color version before but wow it makes Godzilla # 1 more real than he was in the film

I found a Godzilla 1954 colorized DVD for sale with subtitles but not a colorized 1956 Godzilla DVD.
So, before Power Ranger used the original Sentai scene which was cut and pasted with scenes from saban with the Western Actor, there is Raymond Burr who got pasted into the original Gojira scene?

初代ゴジラの『 カラーライズドVersion 』ですけど、改めて観ると難しいのが判りますね。でも、よくやりました✨ゴジラの体色は、『 キングコング対ゴジラ 』の、緑がかった濃いグレーを基調にして頂きたかったです。
