This was my favorite Godzilla movie as a kid. He went from being that weird super hero of the 70's back to being the big bad unstoppable force of nature. The musical score was outstanding. This movie set the bar pretty high for all the movies to come after it. Sadly a few of them flopped pretty hard.
Of the Heisei films, "Biollante" was the only one that bombed at the box office. The others were all very successful, yes, even "Spacegodzilla" which was still more successful than "King Ghidorah."

@@EveryTimeIDavid If I could track down a decent HD version of '85, which I'm guessing doesn't exist, I've got half a mind to make a "perfect edit", or at least perfect in my mind, which would cut out the bad shots of the giant foot where you can clearly see the wires, and add in the Raymond Burr monologue at the end, but cut the entirety of the New World scenes that were added in for '85.

Godzilla 84/85 and Godzilla vs. Monster Zero are the Godzilla movies that got me started as a Godzilla fan. I never looked back. I also want to thank the Godzilla series for making me open my mind more as a kid to search other Japanese pop cultures like anime. Especially anime! Thank you Godzilla!!!! :)
The original Japanese version of this was my first classic Godzilla film on blue ray. I saw the American edit in theaters and as fun as it was, it's almost unwatchable once you've seen the movie as it was intended to be seen. This was my favorite Godzilla film until Godzilla Minus One landed. As it stands, The Return of Godzilla is still my second favorite. I think the biggest surprise in the original cut was the discovery they'd actually made a life sized Godzilla foot for the actors/extras to interact with during at least one scene, demonstrating what at the time was the impressive scale of this production compared to what had come before.
I grew up with the American cut of this movie "Godzilla 1985". The one that brought back Raymond Burr. While I'm aware that the Japanese cut (which is currently released on DVD and Blu-Ray) has its fans, but I personally liked "1985" a bit better imo, especially for how they did the ending. But still, this was a cool trailer.
One of my favorite movies of all times. I love the design of Godzilla and this special kind of 80s Feeling of the movie. It was my second godzilla-movie I saw in my life (the first was Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla from 1974). Too bad that there is no Blu-Ray here in Germany. Also the score is really great. Everything in this movie feels much bigger and more adult than the other movies from the Heisei-Era. Super X 3 from Godzilla Vs Destoroyah looks like a toy but the 84s Super X is iconic. Yeah, I love this movie!!!

I wouldn't say so cause going off by what I've seen this movie is respected alot and is one of the more loved heisei films even people that don't like the entirety of the heisei era don't mind this film and godzilla vs biollante. The only films that get a bad reputation in the era are godzilla vs Spacegodzilla (most of the time) and godzilla vs king ghidorah and godzilla vs mothra (but only half the time)
That’s a new one for me. From what I remember this, Biollante, and Destoroyah are the three Heisei films that are almost universally loved. Vs. Mothra and Spacegodzilla, and to a lesser extent Vs. King Ghidorah and Vs. Mechagodzilla are the ones that have the most divided opinions.
You may have meant the reception for the localized version for the U.S. audience (even then it did fine for the release it got in the U.S.). It's actually a well liked entry and the one that got the hate was Space Godzilla which I happen to like due to its ridiculousness.
Hands down the best Godzilla movie! Incredible special effects that still hold up today. Amazing soundtrack, start to finish. Dark and serious in tone. There is almost no humor at all, which keeps the film serious in tone the whole way through. The tension never breaks. No stupid like meta jokes every 5 seconds like they do in every movie now.
_Godzilla vs. Destoroyah_ not withstanding, _The Return of Godzilla_ is my absolute favorite Heisei film. The grimmer, realistic tone accompanied by the contemporary Cold War tensions and Japan's third-party observance make it a treat to watch. Plus, the Godzilla design, IMO, is fantastic.
I remember binge watching the whole Japanese Toho Godzilla series back in 2017 (1954 up to 2004 and Shin Godzilla). This movie is still memorable for me and one of my favorite Gojira films ever!!!

They had to get his permission for the stock "Godzilla vs. Gigan" score as well as his pieces used for "Godzilla vs. Biollante," where he had the stipulation "just don't turn my music into rock music" (which Koichi Sugiyama absolutely did). Ifukube was offered "Godzilla '84" but he bizarrely turned it down because "I write music for 50-meter monsters, not 80-meter monsters." His daughter was the one to convince him to come back for "Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah" because she said "they're just gonna use your music anyway so you might as well do it."
This is the very first Godzilla movie I ever watched this is my introduction to Godzilla and it's still stands to this day as my favorite Godzilla. I cried when they put Godzilla down in that volcano

1:37 It's always the low angle shots like this that I love most about Godzilla movies. Sadly only the og 1954 and 1984 pulled these shots beautifully. Kinda makes you connect more to the scene compared to monster pov shots. really makes Godzilla look huge despite only around 50/80m in those movies. Hopefully we'll see more low angle shots like this in Minus One

Imo this for me is one of my favorite and best Godzilla movies because it really make you think what if Godzilla was in our state and would our government use a nuclear missile for our "safety"

The Heisei era is probably the best era of Godzilla. TOHO put so much passion into these films, unlike the sloppy Showa era movies.

This is My Favorite Godzilla Movie of All Time! The Look of Godzilla in this Film is My Preferred Look for Him! No Other Godzilla Movie Had this Exact Look of Him! Which is a Shame! The Original Godzilla King of the Monsters is a Very Close 2nd to Me! The Film and the Look of Godzilla! Both Films Make a Perfect Combo Pack! Godzilla King of the Monsters and Godzilla 1985! Perfect!
This, along with the original and Shun are my favourites. I just love it when Godzilla is a destructive animal rather than a super hero. I have Hugh hopes for Godzilla minus one! It will surely expand my trinity of favs.
