God I love Budgie. How they never went stratospheric is hard to fathom. When you compare this version to the Metallica cover, for example, this is just so pure and raw. Also, has there ever been a band with a cooler logo than the bandolier!
I saw them may times in the seventies before they got popular in UK. We were really very lucky as if they had got the true wealth they deserved they would have been adopted by the Americans and be off touring in huge stadiums across the Americas, so we wouldn't be able to see them in small venues in UK.
I just want to say first off I am a huge Budgie fan and I was so happy to watch and listen to this video! Not only did you play Budgie … you guys played two Budgie songs in a row! And! The Old Grey Whistle Test performance is great! So much talent these guys have! RIP Burke Shelley. I loved listening to you two! You two seem so in love! What a happy couple! Just want to say thx for the Budgie plays and I enjoyed watching your channel. I have subscribed and turned on notifications! I am going to check out what else great you guys have tonight! Thx for sharing Budgie! Was great to see you as excited about them as myself. Will be watching!
Thanks guys...I have only just discovered Budgie and I’m in my mid 50s ....and they are an amazing band, and the sound they produce as a three piece is unbelievable. Loving the show, keep it up 👍
I only discovered Budgie in 2020 (thank you covid) now im in love with them ,so many great songs and and riffs ,i think you would love (the author ).......love that song
Budgie are a Welsh Heavy Metal band from Wales in the United Kingdom. The are one of the earliest Heavy Metal bands, and have been playing from as early as 1967.
*The old grey whistle test* was a weekly programme on BBC2 started late 60s early 70s went on for 25/30 years. It was for a long time the only programme on British television where you could see live performances of modern music (pop, blues, rock, etc.) The name is supposed to come from an EMI executive who said that if the caretakers and cleaners (older people, generally, with grey hair) were heard whistling the songs they heard coming from the recording studios, then that song was gonna be a hit. It had passed the 'old' 'grey' 'whistle test'.
Oh wow, it's been forever since I listened to these guys! Pure straight up awesomeness! Thanks for bringing back some nice memories! This was great for Well-digger Wednesday!
Great reaction to a fine band who were very underrated back in the day but were a great influence to many top bands. In for the Kill is a timeless heavy rock classic album. Saw them live many times in the 70's. On the way to the pub for a pre gig beer one night before seeing Budgie at Newcastle City Hall and passed the fish and chip cafe, sitting in there enjoying a pre gig plate of fish 'n' chips was Budgie, they put on an amazing show powered by fish 'n' chips. Great band thanks Kel-n-Rich for spreading the word to a wider audience.
I was a huge Budgie fan back in the day and Rich made a great comment about the 70s rock music. Budgie were swamped by Zep, Purple, Lizzy, Sabbath and others. A great band, very talented but lived in the shadows of the monsters around them. Time for a re-evaluation. Thanks Rich and Kel for blowing a few cobwebs away! Can't wait til you find Badfinger (Without You the original and best )
Wow, it's rare to see someone react to Budgie. A truly under-appreciated band these days. My favourite songs by them are "Parents", "In the Grip of a Tyre-fitters Hand" and "Sky-High Percentage". I consider their 1973 album "Never Turn Your Back on a Friend" a classic. It sits on the cusp of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. As such it's hard to argue it truly deserves a place in the annuls of either. Perhaps that is Budgie's problem. Never-the-less it should get much more attention than it does.
Tony Bourge what a legend, played guitar in two great bands Budgie and Tredegar, his first replacement when he left budgie was a guitar beast as well Huw Lloyd Langton who at that point was fresh out of hawkwind.
So glad you are reacting to one of the most underrated bands of all time,big-ish in England but never really made the breakthrough to the mega band league. They were certainly talented enough.
I saw them in 2006 at South Parade Pier in Southsea in a tiny room with about 50 people there. They deserved better than that, the best head banging sessions i've ever had.Great guys to talk to afterwards.
The best band ever to come out of Cardiff. Burke Shelley and Tony Bourge deserve so much respect. I saw them back in 1977 in Wolverhampton… my ears are still ringing. The OGWT is almost as missed as Budgie. Budgie recorded a number of their albums at Rockfield Studios in Monmouth (in the middle of the Welsh countryside) and interestingly Rush also chose to record ‘A Farewell to Kings’ in the same studio.
Wales finally gets a nod! Budgie was sort of Geddy lee with really large glasses and Tommy Iommi's guitar. I think My mom had those specs back in '76. My Father-in-law did back in 2005.
Budgie originated in Wales, there is some contention as to whether they are actually the original first metal band. The Breadfan riff is brilliant. Big sound for an early trio!
I rented this record (Never turn your back on a friend) back in 1989 because I couldn't find it for sale (well before the internet). There was a place in Pittsburgh that rented records back then. It was attached to a post office.
It's Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman, Rich and it's the song I first heard of Budgies' in the early 1970s. It got me into them in a big, big way. Great band, great video. Keep on keeping on.
Showing my age here and on my birthday as well. I was listening to these guys since Bandolier in 1975 when i was 17 and I had hair like Burke. Music is the 1970's was so diverse and streets ahead of what's dished up today (with exceptions), TV had real shows where bands played a short set live.
Saw Budgie live in 1973. The concert was delayed due to an IRA bomb scare - unforgettable. Another great band from Wales you might like is The Manic Street Preachers.
The Guitar hero reference , was because the BBC made a compilation show , show casing the outstanding guitar players that appeared on BBC music shows over the years.
Way to go, STR!!!! This is one of the main reasons why we do this show. Thank you for saying something. Enjoy them. True giants that are still not well known.
@limeyleafsfan yes, a lot of those music apps don't have a lot of Budgie, I see them live a few times in the 80's they were awesome especially in the Marquee club. Parents off of never turn your back on a friend is an epic track too.
Just ignore any critics - there's always an off switch. Rich and Kel will occassionally play stuff you don't like, stuff that doesn't move you. But every once in a while, they will play something that strikes a chord, triggers a happy or sad memory - that's the joy of this channel. Power to their elbows!
Oh boy... I discovered budgie about 2 years ago before I turned 22, it was really neat to be able to sing the line "now I'm over 21" off of parents on my 22nd birthday!!! Also, Tony bourge is my favorite guitarist (at least electric) of all time.
I saw them many times in and around The Potteries in the 70`s early 80`s.A great live band ,but overshadowed by Cream,Purple and Zeppelin,in particular. They released some great albums,"Never Turn your back on a friend" and "Bandolier" being probably two of the best.
@@alrivers2297 Yeah, and others like Free,Tull, and all the first wave prog bands---like Floyd,Genesis,Yes.Then, around that time the more commercial bands like Mott the Hoople came on the scene as well and Budgie were pushed even more into the background.

Budgie were able to switch from driving metal to acoustical calm within seconds. That was kind of their trademark for the MCA & A&M records. Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman was named after a painting at an art-gallery somewhere in England I guess. Check out the song "Captain" from their "Cuckooland" album. Acoustical & lyrically so great. Thanks for featuring Budgie !

Fantastic choice - Well done, and thanks K'n'R. Budgie is one of my all time favourites. Soooo good. I love your term "Well diggers" - this is so true for Budgie. Also, I urge folk to check out their album covers - the artwork is spectacular: Bandolier, Never Turn you Back on a Friend, If I were Britannia I'd waive the rules, etc - All brilliant music, productions, artworks. Lastly, did you notice that one of the lyrics in that 2nd song "Who do you want for your love" is "Never turn your back on a friend"? Thanks Rich. Thanks Kel xx.
Love this video, and I have a little story if that's ok. In 1994 I moved to Cardiff and started college as a mature student at Coleg Glan Hafren in the Rumney area of the city. Lovely bunch of similar minded 'mature' people - I was 22 - on the course, which if successfully passed would give you an Access to Humanities diploma - and a passport to university. One of my fellow students was a quiet but very friendly fella who stood out only because of his oversized (sorry Burke :) glasses, and because he drove a cool VW camper van. I then started seeing him around my neighbourhood a lot, as he lived just around the corner in Roath. A mate I got to know on the course informed that that was Burke Shelley, who was 'big in Budgie' a few years back. I'd never heard of him, or Budgie to be honest. I guess it was a bit before my time. As I recall, he went off to do a degree at the University of Glamorgan in Pontypridd, but I moved away and as we weren't close friends we never kept in touch. After watching this video I googled him and it turns out that a few years ago he survived an aneurysm, and now has a long-term, life-threatening illness. Wishing you well Burke, wherever you are.
I've absolutely loved this band from way back. One of the best, most underrated bands ever. They were still going great guns until Burke Shelley had a serious aneurism about 10 years ago.Their website lists them as being active still, but on hiatus.I can't find out any more info,i so hope they'll make another comeback.Any info from anyone will be great.
He finds it diffcult to play bass and sing at the same time - it feels sore and uncomfortable to him - but he wouldn't mind sharing twin lead singing duties - him singing one song and the other guy (if they got one) singing the other song and varying it from there. That's as far as I know, mate.
Whoa just found this 👍👍my all time favourite rock band..totally awesome live..saw them a few times in the 70’s..Burke Shelley signed my jeans at a gig in ‘78…. great guys 😀
kinda love Budgie so GREAT choice! If I Were Brittania I'd Waive the Rules is probably in my top 20 favourite albums of all time tbh. random related thing... my mum taught them. i grew up in a small town in South Wales called Tredegar & they went to school there (the internet says Cardiff but i think that's where they kinda ended up, bright lights big city etc). she was a Home Economics teacher, they made good cakes!! 🙂
Oh that’s so cool!!!! It’s amazing... the connections that are uncovered here! Your mum taught them how to cook back in the day. That’s just too good. Thank you for sharing such a great piece of trivia.
They were all from Cardiff, Ray Philips the drummer ended up living near Tredegar and naming his band Tredegar(where he still lives, he also brought out a book earlier this year of the Budgie years).
@@limmoblack ah, more info, thanks for that. i'd always just assumed they were from Tredegar & had gravitated to Cardiff. teaching Budgie & teaching WITH Lynn the Leap Davies were always her claims to fame. 🙂
@@limmoblack Also from near Tredegar is blackwood where their manager Paul Barrett was from he managed budgie, his son would go on to be a known drum and bass artist called High Contrast.
There are soooo many musos that either influenced them or were influenced by them. In the second one, there was definitely a bit of Robert Plant going on in the vocals. Breadfan is my favourite because it is so unique.
The Old Grey Whistle Test was a B.B.C. t.v. Show dedicated to underground rock music from around 1971- 85. It was where you went to find the stuff radio wasn't playing.
The Breadfan footage is from Rockfield Studio just outside Monmouth, check out what who and what was recorded on that little farm... en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockfield_Studios
British TV BBC - OGWT (Old Grey Whistle Test) The Old Greys were the doormen outside the recording/radio studios who wore grey coats(uniforms). They would play new tunes to these guys and then test if they could whistle the tune back. Hence whistle test. If they could repeat the tune it would be a hit.
when in the Army in Germany every payday we would go album shopping , we ALL had reel to reel tape players so we recorded everyone elses albums , I came home from Germany with a library of music , LIKE Budgie , Rush , Uriah Heep , Colleseum , etc etc etc
Check out band called 'Tredegar'. It's a town in Wales. Tony Bourge formed them after he left Budgie. There are a few clips of them playing live! Look for Tredegar..'Parents ',and you'll find them.
It really is the best of all the music programmes. Those amazing mini concerts from lots of the best 70's acts were fantastic. Was turned on to a lot of great music cause of this show !
OGWT is where I got my love of blues rock from, especially prog. They repeated all of them in the 80's when I was a kid. I'm so glad my parents liked that kind of music as well.
God I love Budgie. How they never went stratospheric is hard to fathom. When you compare this version to the Metallica cover, for example, this is just so pure and raw. Also, has there ever been a band with a cooler logo than the bandolier!
Great to see Budgie getting some love and attention. They lived just over the river from my home town, and I saw them live dozens of times in the 70s.

They're huge in Europe my friend
@@Redragonfieldofgreen Yes especially in Poland? I think saw that last few tours were mostly there?

Yes, the band is from my local city, Cardiff, Wales 🏴
That riff in Breadfan is SO good, I could listen to it all day, what a jam.
Have you heard their song Breaking All The House Rules. It's got an amazing lick in it. Another great song by Budgie
Imagine writing so many great riffs that you can afford to throw 3 or 4 in every song
OGWT, the Old Grey Whistle Test... the best music show that the BBC ever had, fantastic performances from the best bands
@Gerald H 'Rock Goes To College' too. Where I first came across Rory Gallagher. Mindblown.
The brief slow part of the song has become my fav part of the song. So hypnotic, calming and soothing with that voice then bam back to jamming!

Old Grey Whistle Test. Like MTV? Not even close.
Ya took the words right outta my mouth, just lookin at them an hearin them, right away I thought 💭 of Rush.. their look 👀 an sound... Rock On 🤘🏼🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
I've absolutely loved this band from way back.
I love these guys as well. Great band!
The Old Grey Whistle Test
@@limmoblack Also from near Tredegar is blackwood where their manager Paul Barrett was from he managed budgie, his son would go on to be a known drum and bass artist called High Contrast.
There are soooo many musos that either influenced them or were influenced by them. In the second one, there was definitely a bit of Robert Plant going on in the vocals. Breadfan is my favourite because it is so unique.
The Old Grey Whistle Test was a B.B.C. t.v. Show dedicated to underground rock music from around 1971- 85. It was where you went to find the stuff radio wasn't playing.
I had not heard any Budgie before, but I liked it and plan to explore more. It was primitive but in a pleasant way.
Enjoy them. Really fun band and so pivotal for metal.
Their 6 first albums is just awsome.
First band I saw live in early 1973 with support from Judas Priest. Both bands came back on stage together for the encore!
The Breadfan footage is from Rockfield Studio just outside Monmouth, check out what who and what was recorded on that little farm...

Love this band...just 3piece raw music
Quite simply a great rock n roll band who never got the adoration they fully deserved.
Napoleon Bone a parts 1&2, from Bandolier 1975, blueprint for many a galloping metal song!
Off the scale good.
Really pure, stripped-to-the-bones heavy rock.
Try Zoom Club next, helluva tune :)
The Old Grey Whistle Test was a late night weekly TV show on BBC 2, sadly not every week throughout the year, hosted by Whispering Bob Harris.
Budgie are proof that great things can come from Wales
You have a great appreciation of good music
Budgie: In the Grip of the Tyrefitter's Hand please
Listen to the whole album Budgie in for the kill awesome awesome album
Guitar Heroes was a BBC compilation show highlighting music from previous BBC shows - like the OGWT.
when in the Army in Germany every payday we would go album shopping , we ALL had reel to reel tape players so we recorded everyone elses albums , I came home from Germany with a library of music , LIKE Budgie , Rush , Uriah Heep , Colleseum , etc etc etc
Hey man, do you still have my tape? LOL :-)
Check out band called 'Tredegar'. It's a town in Wales. Tony Bourge formed them after he left Budgie. There are a few clips of them playing live! Look for Tredegar..'Parents ',and you'll find them.
The Old Grey Whistle Test..... Greatest programme EVER!!!
