My Yellow Ginger Lei - Hawaiian Slack Key

  • One of the greatest of all slack key players was Uncle Leonard Kwan. His compositions and arrangements have helped define the slack key style and influenced many. This version of "My Yellow Ginger Lei" is inspired by his.
I've created clips of this song before, but I was fooling around with my video equipment and this one came rolling out. I was especially happy with the sound of my beloved Kathy Wingert Model E, so I created a bit of a tribute to that guitar.
I was also inspired by the latest updates to the REAPER audio workstation program, which has been extended to do simple video editing, so I used REAPER to assemble this clip.
The audio and main video were captured using a Zoom Q3HD camcorder. The secondary performance shot was done with a Creative Vado HD 3rd Gen, unfortunately that camera has real problems with white balance shifting. Pardon the orange tint that appears at times, please.
You can find a tutorial on video in REAPER at my Homebrewed Music blog: www.homebrewedm... and watch a tutorial video on my homebrewedmusic TH-cam channel: • PC Video in REAPER 4

I could listen to that all day. I have played the vid a dozen times already. I am learning the same tune on the lap steel guitar. Lovely heart warming music. It should be called "Laid Back Key" !!!!

Excellent laid back and flowing arrangement and performance. Truly captures the essence of slack key IMHO. Bravo, Fran!

Aloha and Mahalo for the beautiful music. After many years I am finally returning to my Hawaiian roots. Been learning and practicing slack key for more than 4 years now...takes a long time and lots of practice, yeah? I just put together some tabs for Yellow ginger Lei when I saw your video. Mahalo for giving me more ideas to add. It is good to be home again.

Hello, Thats nice of you to get back to me. I liked the playing so much I sent it to my sister in law who also loved it. Yes I am learning only Hawaiian music on the Lap Steel. There doesn't seem to be a lot of written notation for these tunes so I have to listen and notate myself. Time consuming but I need to do it so I can remember how they go! ( I am an oldie and the brain cells are not peak any more )

I sometimes wonder how these clips get discovered. This is one from several years ago (and several generations of camera upgrades). It was actually intended to be a technical demo but I thought the music turned out OK.
      Glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks for visiting and commenting. We say that slack key is the only music where it's a compliment when the audience falls asleep (grin).

Bo, thanks for visiting. Yes, practice, no substitute for teaching our fingers the songs. And the thumb, play the song with just the thumb. And also play with other folks, listen to a lot of music, sing along.
But it's so much fun it's not too hard, eh?

Thanks found your video from a Reaper forum as I was curious what editing capabilities it has. Either way lovely video, great playing over all well done :)

Heart warming music, indeed, Peter. Thanks for visiting. Are you learning mostly Hawaiian songs or is this an exception?
As you may know, the first Hawaiian steel guitar was a slack key guitar played with a bar, back in the 1890s. And slack key players like Gabby Pahinui and Atta Isaacs were influenced a lot, I think by steel players. Gabby was a great steel player himself.
