I agree, the characters here are in any case very multifaceted and ambivalent, this ambivalence is very interesting because the game explores a lot in relation to all the characters and how they interact with the environment, the story and the context in which they find themselves. Sometimes a masterpiece doesn't come from great writers, but from "ordinary" people, because that's what art is, art is expression, feeling and construction.

FINALLY, Someone that understands. The game is so much more than just the (morally questionable, like everything else :/) actions the characters and how they interact. The game is much more than a edgy visual novel (Not insanely, but definitely more) it's so upsetting for people to get so caught up with the incest ending that they miss the whole plot. The fact that the incest ending doesn't even happen but is LITERATELY A DREAM CHOICE, That you "The Character" can decide, shows how good this game is; it makes people miss the little details, like how the toxi soda started, how Andrew knows about Ashley's voice mails. And so much more.
Well you know how it is - the algorithm rewards outrage, and the ignorant opinions displayed to appease it further influence the opinions of those interacting with them. - A feedback loop. It's why I no longer interact with the fandoms of things I enjoy. (except for Limbus Company, they're alright)
Bruh, I remember when a peer and I talked about this game. She told me that it was very bad because of all the incest and “fan service”, and told me to never get into it. However, I got into it anyway, because I had a friend who liked it, and I’m glad I did. After getting into it, I questioned whether she had actually played the game, because the game had zero fan service (if the dream vision doesn’t count), and because the incest turned out to just be a story branch.
@Kureemy I think it stems from everyone wanting to have an opinion on things and be part of the conversation, so they get their quick info from short videos. Things like that are the reason why I don't engage in discussions about things I haven't experienced for myself. Like, I really like Star Wars, but I haven't watched the Disney sequels because I've heard that they're bad and they don't look interesting to me. I even watched video essays explaining that they're bad. But if you ask me about my opinion on them ? I dunno, I haven't watched them, the essays might've been biased. Videos like mine might be biased too, which is why I appreciate people like you, who go and play the game for themselves and make their own opinions based on that
Having played it myself last week, I actually ended up loving the game, and I pretty much share the same opinion you have when it comes to the story and dynamic of the siblings. It's funny enough the one rare exception I'd make when I were to ship a sibling pair together (never been into that for any anime, games, and obviously irl). Besides that, I love the edgy humor and artstyle of the game as it pretty much suits the kind of thing I'm into.
Same here, I was usually indifferent or weirded out by stuff like that in other media, cause it's usually done in a very fetishistic way, unlike how it is in this game

I definitely think that it gave the game a lot of free publicity, for better and for worse. But I agree that even without it, the game would still be successful, just maybe with a smaller fanbase.
Seen some images here and there of fanart of Ashley, Andrew and Renee but thought it was just random art without any connection at all. Found out about the game by….certain images of Renee and now I’m here

@@DramaticusMaximus it was over a year ago so I don't remember it super well, but I did replay it multiple times to see the different endings. Maybe you just started a new game for another route without seeing a real ending or maybe not i dunno.
Some things to point out here is that, the creator of the game stated in a itch io post that Ashley does not actually have romantic feelings for Andrew, and that she just has a very unhealthy obsession for him. Everything that Ashley does is an agenda to get Andrew to submit to her no matter what it takes. In burial sane the narrator reveals that in truth Ashley doesn’t actually care about if sex with Andrew happens or not but will do it as a means of leverage.. The narrator also revealed that sex would be Ashley’s strongest leverage against Andrew, even more than the trinket.. Also Andrew looks to be trauma bonded to Ashley but is mistaking it for love. A trauma bond is when someone grows affection towards their abuser and feels like they cannot leave the relationship even though they know they really should and feels like they need them. they can start making excuses for them which Andrew does for Ashley, go through extreme highs and lows, and etc. Lastly the creator mentioned in the first dev log of the game that the incest is not to be perceived as a good thing in the game. This is why I don’t think sex is necessarily being used to be romantic in this story but as a means of leverage and submission and corruption The creator: “More murder, cannibalism, and (questionable bonding) to come. Yes the story only gets worse from here.” The creator then says “ but since there are multiple endings to discover, maybe you will find a happy one somewhere in there too.” This implies that only one out of the four endings is an actual good ending and won’t contain any of those 3 sins of the story.
True, but I also feel like Ashley's attitude towards Andrew warms up a bit at the end of burial Ep. 2. While she still doesn't exactly reciprocate his romantic feelings in the same way, I think she worries a bit less about having to control him, since he proved himself to be loyal regardless. Also she genuinely cares about him in her own way, and is open to taking their relationship in that direction. The trauma bond makes sense, but we can't ignore the fact that Andrew had always lacked empathy towards anyone but Ashley, even during the scene with Nina. (he was worried about getting in trouble, and getting separated from Ashley, before the traumatic event even happened) And to be honest, I think the creator's use of words like "bad, awful, worse" etc. is meant to be taken in a comedic way sometimes. Look at one of their previous games - "Better Half". The ending where the clones end up in a romantic relationship is "haha bad ending, they're being losers", but it's also a pretty happy ending. I just feel like the game doesn't focus on tragedy and psychological horror as much as people think. It has elements of dark comedy to it too.
@@drownedcorwid I am gonna have to disagree about her attitude in burial when it comes to control, she clearly still looks concerned about losing control over Andrew. In sane she says “Maybe he really has changed” and again the narrator says that she would use sex as leverage. In questionable she also says she would use sex as leverage.. It’s more accurate to say that beneath the surface she genuinely only cares about her own needs as she “uses” Andrew. She believes her literal life is in Andrew. Which is why she is co dependent to him. She feels she has no self value So she places all her value in him.. One thing that has been clear about Ashley is that she is full of delusions about life, and herself. She has yet to realize, understand And accept that her terrible behavior, not listening and not accepting help in the past is what caused her to be avoided and disliked at school and at home.. I won’t downplay the parents neglect as it didn’t help anything but it still came from her bad behavior which is why the mom told Andrew to be her parent. I do not believe that Andrew is full blown with his lack of empathy compared to Ashley, In his nightmare When he was reminded of Nina, he was very hesitant to approach the box and showed major concern. I do not believe that he is worried about getting caught about that anymore because it’s been so long that literally the only way to get caught is to go to the police himself and tell them the truth.. When it comes to the authors use of those words in this story for the most part I don’t believe it’s comedic. Called Ashley a monster. Also said the world is better off without them, also in the gag endings for episode two the awfulness of Renee was highly reflected on. Judging how the first dev log is worded That’s why It seems that the happy ending won’t consist of those sins. I also believe that this ending will happen in burial. The reason why I believe that is not only that it’s because it’s the final chapter but if you look closely, the episode titles are named in a specific sequence of the process of death. The Coffin, Graves, then lastly Burial This is the correct process. Decay would be what comes after burial because that’s all that’s left for the body to do inside the coffin but in this case can disrupt the correct sequence. I believe that the vision that the demon went out of its way to show Andrew and Ashley is fake, and that the sane vision is the vision that shows the outcome of making the questionable vision come true. I do believe that the mark on Andrew comes from the big demon that’s wants him..
@@derrickjake1679 I appreciate the discussion, even though I have to agree to disagree. The moment Andrew starts to actually trust Ashley in burial, he no longer panics during the butchering scene, unlike in decay. I believe that previously, and during decay he *was* still worried about Ashley ratting him out, if he doesn't do as she says. I don't think his panic or fear is ever caused by actually caring about other people's wellbeing, except for Ashley, where he's quite possessive about her. And I'm not saying that bad things aren't bad, but I don't think the game will go out of it's way to moralize at this point. They can be bad people and do bad things, but still get a happy ending regardless. And the game often plays their bad things out for comedic purposes, like with the skull throwing at the end of questionable burial. Hell, most of the bad things they do have some sort of humor attached to it. I genuinely see it as a dark comedy adventure game, with psychological horror elements. But it's an interesting theory about the dreams being fake. The demon hasn't lied to them before, though. But we'll see, time will tell, with the release of the next episodes. I did notice the episode titles and it's a very nice touch. I somewhat agree about Ashley, though I don't think her obsession with him and attaching her own worth to him makes her unable to genuinely care about him. Both things can be true, in my opinion. She still clings to control in burial, but I believe it's the beginning of her slowly letting go of it, and trusting Andrew too.
@@drownedcorwid in the character descriptions it says that Andy’s character as we see in the story is Doormat Extrodinare and that he just exists, we see in the story not only that trait but also hidden ones. Andy also has a deep fear of consequences This means for Ashley’s description as Leyley it’s “Very not good, in fact very bad”. We see this trait in her ever since she was a child, The co-dependency is what made her kill Nina, heavily harass Julia and abuse Andrew. This is why I believe in the happy ending she will finally realize that she was wrong for all of that and finally learn the right lessons and truly overcome Leyley.. Andrew too.. Because in reality Andrew giving into Ashley does not help her to believe she has self worth. He would only be giving into her delusions and enhancing the co dependency.. In short it does not help her nor himself to grow as a person.. The co dependency since the start has never done them any favors, it literally is what started their criminal history. I honestly believe that in burial, Julia will come back in the flesh at some point and will set up that ending.. I say this because in the room with the 3 objects, you can place them in a way where Andrew and Julia are Happy but Ashley is not. HOWEVER, if you look to the right door, you see Andrew and Ashley happy With a smiling sun over their head, this seems to show that Ashley seems to accept and be ok with that choice in the end.. Also notice that if you go to the questionable door it shows in different ways that it’s not a good decision. 1. The door basically tells you before entering. 2. The music that is being played before entering Slows down and transposes down after opening the door and sounds more bad/sinister 3. After drawing over the 3 pictures, the demon shows up and turns the room red and darkens it, but the most important part imho is that if you look closely. Once the room is darkened you see all of the pictures that Ashley drew over, highlighted except the one that says “Siblings” I believe that firstly, since the demon summoned Andrew and Ashley to a dream, it in fact “created” that dream. Andrew is nowhere to be seen which means it had more of a focus on Ashley. And the part where the demon had her draw over the pictures and highlighted every one of them except the “Siblings” picture. I believe it’s not just because she didn’t draw over it. But because it expresses her delusions and that she fails to understand that that he is her brother not her life. The fact that all of that took place in her head is another reason why I believe this
@@drownedcorwid Both make some good points. Honestly I didn’t think about the titles of the episodes like that until now. But one thing I was focused on was the title of the game and the visuals that shows in the title. Andrew is holding a fork and knife which represents the Cannibalism, Ashley holding the cleaver looks to represent murder and the chains that wrap around the coffin keeping it closed seems to represent the co-dependency, when you look up codependency you see pictures with chains or similar in them. When it comes to the endings the creator did show seemingly the second ending to decay in a screenshot where Andrew and Ashley are in a seemingly one bedroom apartment with a neighbor shouting DIVORCE ALREADY!!, don’t know why though. If there is supposed to be only one happy ending I would think that it would be in the last branch as well. The author did say that both branches are entirely unique. In this one they seem to find a ring on the ground. In all honesty I wouldn’t expect to see them find one in burial nor see the same kind of ending twice if that’s the case. And like the other guy said, burial is the final one which I think will hold more important stuff. If Andrew and Ashley are to change for the better, something big would have to happen.
I’ve always found the story and their relationship beautiful, and I hate that it’s been ruined by people who’ll get offended over it. It’s a game about terrible broken people who do terrible things, but they’re trying to do better. Ashley is learning to love and trust, and Andrew is learning to give up on his false pretenses, and they’re becoming better people. Not good people, definitely will always be terrible people, but they are getting better
You put it into words beautifully, I agree with everything you said. People needing their moral high ground in regards to fictional characters is what's ruining modern fiction in general, in my opinion. Not every story needs to be there to have a moral to teach, I appreciate this game for trusting that my sense of morality has already been developed, so I don't need to be constantly reminded of what's right and wrong in the *real world* . Old Norse sagas have always been my palate cleanser for that, cause they didn't give a damn about teaching you morals, lol. Stuff like "Oh, he was a murderous maniac, killer of countless men... but otherwise a pretty good priest !"
"How do you improve on a masterpiece" This is why I think you should plan out a full project if you are making something creatively. J.K Rowling planned the 7 books from the beginning when publishing the first book. Imagine she planned for it to be a one-shot and than millions of fans demanded a sequel? Would've been much more difficult, I'm sure.
I agree 100%. And planning out like that avoids the story contradicting itself by parts added later. I'm also slightly worried that since the creator is working on the Decay route rn, it seems like they're putting all their ideas for where the story needs to go into it. So I don't know what's going to be left for Burial. But they *are* the author, so I trust their judgement and ability. Haven't disappointed us so far. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Videos like mine might be biased too, which is why I appreciate people like you, who go and play the game for themselves and make their own opinions based on that
That edgy aura is very funny when u think about it, it feels soooo 2013 jaja

Having played it myself last week, I actually ended up loving the game, and I pretty much share the same opinion you have when it comes to the story and dynamic of the siblings. It's funny enough the one rare exception I'd make when I were to ship a sibling pair together (never been into that for any anime, games, and obviously irl). Besides that, I love the edgy humor and artstyle of the game as it pretty much suits the kind of thing I'm into.
Same here, I was usually indifferent or weirded out by stuff like that in other media, cause it's usually done in a very fetishistic way, unlike how it is in this game
i once saw the game on tik tok when the controversy was going and it was on my wishlist for a long time and when i finally bought it i was shocked how well written the story was such a lilttle indie game has more lore and depth then other popular story games and i must say i played ALOT of story games, its such a waste too just down play the game like that its truly a masterpiece.
I agree. It's rare for a story to make me care about it's characters to the same extent that this one did
Imo the story is well written and if the incest part didnt exist the game would be thriving
I definitely think that it gave the game a lot of free publicity, for better and for worse. But I agree that even without it, the game would still be successful, just maybe with a smaller fanbase.

Slay the princess: Are you sure about that?
Slay the Princess is alright, but didn't really move me at all, just one of those games that I play, have fun and forget about the next day. I respect your opinion tho
@@drownedcorwid Its alright, maybe the decisions you made in your fist playtrough made it a little worse but thats alright, to see the full game you have to play a lot of times and with the new pristine cut its even bigger, tell me what routes did you made in the time you played? And maybe i can recommend a really REALLY good one, seriously if you give it a change it will change your mind about the game, more or less.
@@DramaticusMaximus it was over a year ago so I don't remember it super well, but I did replay it multiple times to see the different endings. I do kinda remember getting an ending where all the different versions of the princess merge with eachother I think (?). that was the last ending I saw and I remember liking it, from the writing and soundtrack perspective, but it still didn't speak to me on a personal level in a way that some other things do. I'm afraid I'm not intelligent enough to eloquently explain the reasons for it though :/ but I definitely agree that it's a good game and story, at the end of the day. I might give it another chance one of these days, if you recommend it (cause I also played it for the first time while being sleep deprived so a lot of things might have flew over my head)
@@drownedcorwid So you got the stranger, you should give it another change, with the pristine cut it has so much content, i really recomend the thorn route, but do as you like, give it a change and play it with a clear mind, and i think you made separated routes, you know when the hands gran the princess and you look at the mirror? Maybe you just started a new game for another route without seeing a real ending or maybe not i dunno.
@@DramaticusMaximus ok, I'll try the pristine cut out, thanks !
This is why I don’t think sex is necessarily being used to be romantic in this story but as a means of leverage and submission and corruption
The creator:
“More murder, cannibalism, and (questionable bonding) to come. Yes the story only gets worse from here.”
The creator then says “ but since there are multiple endings to discover, maybe you will find a happy one somewhere in there too.”
This implies that only one out of the four endings is an actual good ending and won’t contain any of those 3 sins of the story.
(he was worried about getting in trouble, and getting separated from Ashley, before the traumatic event even happened)
And to be honest, I think the creator's use of words like "bad, awful, worse" etc. is meant to be taken in a comedic way sometimes.
I do not believe that Andrew is full blown with his lack of empathy compared to Ashley, In his nightmare
When he was reminded of Nina, he was very hesitant to approach the box and showed major concern.
Judging how the first dev log is worded
That’s why It seems that the happy ending won’t consist of those sins. I also believe that this ending will happen in burial. The reason why I believe that is not only that it’s because it’s the final chapter but if you look closely, the episode titles are named in a specific sequence of the process of death.
The Coffin, Graves, then lastly Burial
This is the correct process.
Andy also has a deep fear of consequences
This means for Ashley’s description as Leyley it’s “Very not good, in fact very bad”.
2. The music that is being played before entering Slows down and transposes down after opening the door and sounds more bad/sinister
3. After drawing over the 3 pictures, the demon shows up and turns the room red and darkens it, but the most important part imho is that if you look closely. Once the room is darkened you see all of the pictures that Ashley drew over, highlighted except the one that says “Siblings”
I believe that firstly, since the demon summoned Andrew and Ashley to a dream, it in fact “created” that dream.
U got a nice voice man
Thanks ! Was worried that it would be unpleasant to listen to, since I was a bit sick while recording.
