Impressive that they digged a deep investigation into motivation behind the assassination when it was already obvious who did it. I truly believe the fact that they did this is the very prime reason why homicide rate in Japan is low. Most other places would simply jail the person and give 0 f*ck for the reasons why he decided to assassinate someone. When you study reasons into homicide it helps you to prevent future incidents.
I saw a video explaining this phenomenon. Japanese people are more likely to assign collective blame rather than individual blame. When someone does a heinous crime, their superiors and acquaintances are also likely to be blamed. As a collective society, they're more likely to assign blame that encompasses the entire group instead of solely the single individual.
I’m personally quite skeptical of the accuracy of their homicide rates in Japan, especially if they’re calculating based on convictions and not dead bodies, because until fairly recently there was a statue of limitation on homicide, which meant if you didn’t catch the killer in a set amount of time, they would get away with it, even if you later found irrefutable proof of their guilt they couldn’t be charged for the crime. So, depending on how Japan’s murder rate is calculated, it could be quite misleading, perhaps it’s still dramatically lower than other countries but still not AS low as the statistics insinuate. It’s something I’d have loved to verify myself but due to the data coming from Japanese source it really requires a Japanese speaking individual to truly be able to investigate the integrity of the data being used for this statistic. Regardless, I think the most simplest explanation for why this investigation occurred is the fact it was a high profile political figure that was assassinated, with it occurring right in front of a multitude of main stream journalists/TV crews who captured everything as it unfolded. The innovative and unique murder weapon on its own was also enough to ensure it’d be impossible for any member of the general public to be satisfied with a reductive explanation of “political extremism” as the motive for the murder. The sympathetic backstory of the killer also seems to go viral online instantly after the crime occurred, adding even more intrigue. Bizarrely specific crimes always prompt the public’s desire for equally specific explanations.
Well, it is a huge political assassination, so obviously they need to question the motive, whether or not there are foreign powers connected to the assassin and so on.
there was a story on reddit, where a foreigner living in japan got arrested. (which was a misunderstanding that he was carrying drugs which were actually his meds) he was in for 7ish days and the police dig up his whole background. Like a wholef fat book of info on this guy. mind blowing

Scientology is worse, no? Did the moon cult force this woman to give away all her money? Or was she just a nutjob? Scientology holds its members hostage and doesn't let them leave and harasses them when they do. But, people still join of their own free will. Communists don't give people a choice. Very interesting video; just a couple of notes. 1) this wasn’t the first political assassination since World War Two in Japan. A communist party leader was famously killed with a katana in the post-war period. 2) Abe’s murder likely had political motivations behind it that are worth exploration. Abe was not an obvious target for the kind of grievances the perpetrator had.
Asanuma wasn't a communist, he was anti-American and wanted complete expulsion of liberalism and anglo-american influence. While Yamaguchi's nationalist party first article is to be pro-American
If you know more about this may I ask, this cult was linked with the liberal party? Or was that just a fact the guy was liberal not the cult is? Just curious since we have a liberal cult too
The Liberal Democratic Party is a right-wing political party, it's unrelated to the Western definition of "liberal" (also there is no "liberal cult" in the West).

South Korean here. It may sound odd, but many Koreans actually sympathized with Yamagami, since there are plenty of people whose lives were ruined thanks to a relative or family member joining a cult. It's probably the first time in history that the Koreans and Japanese actually agreed on something.
When I was in school in the 80s in germany, we were warned several times about various activ cults, including the "moonies". Apparently they were quite activ in germany and europe as well.
Yes, people in Japan are very sympathetic towards cult victims. You can't really go anywhere without seeing recruiting efforts by them. When I first moved to Japan, I was warned a dozen times about cults by different people. I think context needs to be given that many people protest Abe's funeral because it is costing I think it was $12 million from the government? Not specifically protesting a funeral for Abe but the cost of it. Despite sympathy, most people I know don't have an opinion on whether he should be released or not. I'm not sure a petition with 13k signitures is indicitive of Japanese sentiment (nor is my experience from those around me).
I was at that station where he was shot just a couple days earlier. You bet I was surprised. O_o I've actually met a number of Unification church members back in 2014 to 2015, and one of my friends' mother was literally showing us photos of Reverend Moon and explaining it. She was really deep into it, but I could tell he wasn't. I met a newly married couple that actually explained the mass wedding thing to me. He was American and his wife Japanese, and he explained to me that they basically set up arranged marriages from their parents, so they knew each other. I noticed that they seemed to encourage international marriages. I actually wonder what has happened to those couples since the assassination, whether they stayed or split. It's been a very strange time for us to be back living in Japan, but I haven't heard anything like that again since 2015 at least. The other one to note is Soka Gakkai, a modern Nichiren Buddhism sect that has a lot of business ties. I learned from one guy that they own Daiso, the most popular 100 yen shop chain in the country, among other well known business.
Soka Gakkai is quite influential in my Japanese in-laws' neighborhood. My mother-in-law told me before we first went to the local Catholic church that we should not tell any neighbor where we were going, because they might see us in a bad light. As if a dirt poor international family could be seen in any good light, LOL.
As for TayoEXE's comment, there's not much change within the love of international couples as it's completely unrelated to the assassination itself..speaking as one of those couples. Try to find out how the US-Japanese couple is doing now...for sure they've received a heck of unparalleled criticism from society and might just need someone to converse with them from an unbiased, objective standpoint.
The video would have you believe he did it for altruistic and selfless purposes: this could not be further from the truth.

That mother is an absolutely horrific human being. How could she not see the problem?
I was at that station where he was shot just a couple days earlier. You bet I was surprised. O_o
I've actually met a number of Unification church members back in 2014 to 2015, and one of my friends' mother was literally showing us photos of Reverend Moon and explaining it.
Someone killed someone else and only then did everyone else snap their attention to the root motivator. How tragically timeless.
The video would have you believe he did it for altruistic and selfless purposes: this could not be further from the truth. He was driven by greed and the knowledge that he would not inherit monies that he never worked for and didn’t deserve, just because he didn’t agree with his parents choices. He’s not a noble assassin. He’s a cowardly murder

This is the problem with atheistic countries. Nihilism just runs rampant. With it, value of humanity just plummets. Cults and religion eventually thrives because of the lack of empathy or the state promotes religious authoritatianism to fill the void. This is also slowly happening in South Korea, even worse in China as state sponsored atheism is in full drive. It happened in the Soviet Union. It happened in Cambodia. It happened in Germany. And the ultimate result is open for everyone to see in current North Korea. Even though I am an atheist, I have a big appreciation for religion, one that is secular and can adapt to new trends and realities at least.

Both cults have garnered insane amount of funds and have their hands deep in various governments around their world, and control media to a great extent
The most horrifying thing is this: Both carry the motto of peace and seem completely unassuming at first, seemingly being there to help you improve your personal health through meditation.
