Hands down your channel is the best on TH-cam for practical information about turntables and vinyl playback. Your A-B comparison videos in particular have directly influenced a few of my purchases.

Excellent video. Very concise and detailed. Anyone who is serious about vinyl playback should at least try to be knowledgeable of this information.

Bravo. Très TRÈS utile. Une excellente explication. Merci- Patrick

I used the equation and the resonance of the Shure is about 12 Hz and the Oyster is about 20Hz. Your test shows resonance around 5Hz and 8Hz. So much difference?

Can I add blu-tek to add mass on the tone arm to match low compliance cartridge?

Good afternoon, I have lost two screws that hold the shure needle, can you help me find them, I really appreciate it.

If you used the stabilizer on the Shure, I would think the result would be much closer to the Oyster.

Hey that's super interesting! Thanks for doing this video.
A question you perhaps know the answer. I've got a Technics SL-1200, the classic MK2 version. Now, the effective mass for the tonearm is about 12 grams. I was thinking about getting a Concorde cart and fitting an Ortofon OM-stylus on it. I'm not a handy guy and fiddling around with small screws, cables and expensive gear makes me nervous. So a Concorde is perfect.
Anyway, those OM needles are high compliance, about 25. According to the compliance/resonance calculator over at Vinylengine that should push a 12 gram tonearm into resonance as long as the cart weighs more than 5 grams. The Concorde is 18,5 gram which should give a frequency of 5hz or less. Still this combo is quite popular. The guys at Kabusa even sells Concorde pre-fitted with OM10-OM40 styli especially for the SL-1200. I don't get it.

SL-1200 tonearm effective mass includes stock headshell which weighs about 7,5 grams. If you're going to use Concorde you won't have this headshell and it's just Concorde's 18,5 grams plus mere tonearm weight 4,5 grams.

I’m trying to understand why this even matters because this would only make sense if the tone arm didn’t ride on a pivot that we have a counterweight to adjust the stylus pressure. Therefore since we can create our own stylus pressure through the counter-weight, the affect on the cantilever will only be based on what we put the tracking force at.

Basic question: what does it mean when it vibrates at the resonant frequency?

Another great video showing what no one else has.
How important do you find this phenomena to be in terms of performance?

No importance at all on my turntable. I can run every cartridge I have ever owned, but I am running a very popular vintage medium-mass tonearm. This becomes more important on high-end low mass tonearms or high mass tonearms. Also, to put this into perspective: in the 1970s, during the hey-day of vinyl, there was little to no importance placed on cartridge compliance. I can't even find out my tonearm's effective mass because pioneer never thought it was important to share that data. This is somewhat of a "modern" fixation.

I use Denon DP 57L and I can't find any information about its tone arm mass. Oh, I use straight arm. Do you happened to know about its tone arm mass?

    • @Audiorpheus_Vinyl
      @Audiorpheus_Vinyl  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Just like me. My pioneer doesn’t list its tonearm mass as well. Your denon will have a medium mass tonearm which should work with most cartridges. This becomes more important if you have a very light or very heavy tonearm.

depends on what armtube you use. With the straight arm its low mass with the s arm its medium mass. I have a dp60l and with the small straight armtube and small counterweight its 9grams

If the tonearm came mounted on the turntable , the mass may not be stated .

how do i replace my tone arm? I bought new cartridges but my stock tone arms dont screw on like every tone arm ive seen online. There are two tiny screws at the bottom but i cant find any vids explaining this

If you activate the brush on the Shure, you'll find the resonance virtually disappears.

At 1.12 I think you mean resonant frequency, not "frequency response."
