      @@garya1386 I have a niece who is always smiling, ever since she was a baby, something I was always accused of many times. I play a game when shopping, if I see a child from a distance, I can attract that child to smile back at me, after they've looked at, whoever they are with, as if for confirmation. I've even done it in a Super Market in France, from across quite a distance, the baby was on its Mother's back., Was East Asian. Too young to be talking, but had a lovely smile. Maybe it's because I'm a small female, they don't sense any threat. I'm too old at 84 to change. Keep Smiling.😊😊

    Wales is indeed beautiful. I especially loved the picturesque towns and villages which appeared to my North American eyes as a combination of whimsy and history. @@charleshunter7864 I have never been to the States. My comment could just as easily apply, I am sure, to many American cities, towns and villages, its the thought that picturesque towns and villages only existed for the purpose of gratifying visitors, as though they were part of some idealised/stylised film set. All places of habitation are the result of many, many complex interactions that are much more important and a lot more interesting than simply what they look like. When I visit a place I look for more than a superficial aesthetic.

    I've lived in England all my life. What I love is that I live in a tiny village with a Norman church; I look out of any window and see rolling green hills all around, the main sound I hear is birds singing and horses neighing; no planes fly over the house. Yet with a 15-minute drive, I'm in town.

    • @Dragonblaster1
      @Dragonblaster1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Garry Arden Small world: there’s a Radcliffe Road in Hitchin. The road I live on is called Snailswell Lane (when it rains, you find out why). The top half of the lane, where I live, is an unadopted road (unlike the bottom half, which is covered with gravel at the moment, preparatory to tarmac, with a 20mph limit, but I can drive down it faster than I can down the top half. It’s also a dead end, and my house is third from the top.
      And the field opposite is a floodplain, and the others are privately owned by farmers.

    Ashley, firstly your smile & laughter is just like a ray of sunshine. It is simply beautiful & a joy to behold. You never cease to amaze me with your boundless energy & passion, it is addictive to watch
    My personal favourite aspects of British life are the abundance of history everywhere you look, the castles, the stately homes, the monuments & architecture generally but even that is overshadowed by the scenic views across the Union. A fantastic mix of hills & dales, of rock formations dating back millions of years, the Jurassic Coast in Dorset, the beauty of Devon & Cornwall; the Peak & Lake Districts; the city of Newcastle, the Highlands of Scotland are just a few of the things in addition to the Cityscapes. Thanks so much for all the pleasure you bring. Best wishes 🙂

I live in burry port and the views here of the gower peninsula are to die for. Beaches 1 either side of the harbour and Cefn sidan which is part of a pembrey national park. Pembrey national park was during ww2 an ammunition factory for the UK. If you walk down Cefn sidan you will occasionally find a small remains of ships which have been left to rott for centuries. They were left there after being attacked by the axe men. Also Pembrey airport is where Amelia earhart Landed from her trip across the Atlantic. She was due to land in Ireland but due to bad weather flew over it and ended up in wales. The local airport departure lounge is named after her and is run by 1 of your fellow Americans. This area is beautiful and feel you would have missed a trick if you hadn't seen it.

    There has been fewer fields of rape over the last few years, the price of rapeseed oil fell and a seed treatment to prevent desease was banned. There may be more next year as the price has risen again and farmers are overcoming the desease problem by sowing a cover crop in the fields with the rape and growing certain plants in the field margins.

    One thing I do envy people from large countries like the US or Canada is their expectance of scale and travel! I find if they see a place that is say 2 hours travel they are gung-ho to go there where as I find us Brits are more likely to say how far , I am not going that far!

      @@markhepworth7822 Definitely exaggerating. Me and my partner regularly travel between Rotherham where we live to Reading where I'm from to see friends and family. It usually takes around 3 hours and we think nothing of it. We go on hour/hour and a half drives over saddleworth etc. Just for fun. Would I travel 3 hours to go get lunch probably not but I would travel that far for a 'day out' no issues.

    Honestly if you ever get a Chance, check out Anglesey in Wales. Absolutely beautiful place. Tbf as long as you steer clear of the industrial towns you will most definitely see some picturesque places.

    Rapeseed is not a popular term in Canada but that's what we Canadians make Canola oil from! If I wanted to take a walk through a very similar field where I am - I'd be walking through the yellow flowers of a soy farm. I'm surrounded by huge soy farms around here where it was completely different crops years ago. Ironically, my address is Fernhill Boulevard! LOL Heather xo

    The field of yellow Scotch Broom behind you.
    It is a very invasive plant.
    I think it's kind of pretty.
    Washington and Oregon are doing everything they can to eradicate it.
    It showed up about 25 years ago and has taken overi chunks here and there along the highway system.
    Please post tips and links on how we can go to The UK and stay there too.
    I am so in love with everything I see over there.

    Hi Ash! Loved hearing of your experience in li’l old Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 a country of approx 3 million people (I’m sure there are cities in USA with populations that number)! About an hour’s drive from Cardiff is the city of Swansea and did you know that there’s a Swansea in Massachusetts? (In the county of Bristol which itself is an English city name) and was named after Swansea, Wales when some of the first settlers in America in the 1600’s were from here! In addition you can find Swansea in California, South Carolina, Illinois and Arizona! And then there’s the town of Cardiff in Jefferson County Alabama, it’s not alone as there are an additional 12 places named Cardiff in USA. A lot of the founding fathers were either Welsh or had Welsh ancestry. Hilary Clinton’s grandmother is Welsh. Some of the early US presidents again had Welsh ancestry.
    A former industrial town ten miles outside of Swansea manufactured the steel roof for the White House in the late 1900’s!
    Again thanks for sharing your joy in visiting us and if you ever thought of making a permanent move here you’d be sure of the warmest of welcomes here! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇬🇧🇺🇸

    You seem in such a happy place, you're beaming from ear to ear, and you can also hear it in that girly giggle. If I'm being honest, I reckon you should get yourself a good British boyfriend, get hitched, then make Wales your base, and travel around. When someone has found the place they feel so happy and comfortable living, that's where they should make their home. GO FOR IT! By the way, you left one essential like of your list....CIDER!!!!

    You of-course have a good start with a common language to help.
    But (as a language teacher) I see major differences between two people of the same nationality living here, and one half of any couple who has intermarried with an English-speaking other half.
    The differences are so totally enormous but we don't have time to write a book here.
    What IS important, is that when YOU move on to your next country, the measure of success and/or happiness will be dependant on following the criteria I mentioned above.
    So, happy travels and let us know how you're getting on.

    It's a "footpath". A legal public right-of-way across private land, which landowners have to maintain, including stiles and gates.

    • @chrismartin2663
      @chrismartin2663 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, and the sort of thing i miss in central minnesota. Its possible "up north" there's more trails but near the twin cities, which are in many ways, quite beautiful, everything is really managed trails on managed land.

  • @lizzieburgess674
    @lizzieburgess674 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    They are not 'trails'. Most of the routes you walk in the countryside are, in the main, public rights of way (PROWs) of different 'status' (ie who has the absolute right to use them) and many, if not most, of them are 'traditional' routes which have been in use for hundreds or even thousands of years.

    • @yedis1750
      @yedis1750 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So trails then

    • @lizzieburgess674
      @lizzieburgess674 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@yedis1750 No. Such 'Trails' that exist here are something rather different and a _much_ more recent concept than are PROWs. One type of 'trail' is a named and themed (usually though not always on some cultural theme) route constructed by tourism and similar bodies by 'linking' PROWs and quiet lanes, signposting them accordingly and promoting them. Another type is the disused rail or tramway, 'converted' by a local authority or similar body into a trail suitable for the needs or requirements of residents and visitors to the area; this may or may not be 'dedicated' as a PROW of appropriate status, or it may merely be a 'concessionary' path. The history of PROWs in England and Wales - and indeed in the whole of mainland |Europe too - is long and interesting, as is the history of the much wider public access to private land which is commonplace in Scotland and Scandinavia.

    • @Dragonblaster1
      @Dragonblaster1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Ashley, Great to see you still looking so happy & your infectious laugh, While you were in the Rapeseed field talking about accents around the UK I could hear the birds, did you know and I'm not pulling your leg here that scientists have noticed that in the UK the wildlife and especially birds have regional accents/calls like us humans? On another note can you please stop showing us the lovely cakes you're eating as everytime I see one I go off in search of chocolate & it's not helping my waistline! Anyway all the best Jim, Surrey X
