Wait a minute. Caterpillers are prepubescent butterflies. Not even a teenage butterfly, that's called a pupa. And he's attracted to an adult butterfly. Ohh noooooooooo.
Seriously though, you don't need to beleive in God to feel special. Hopefully you all can keep that in mind. And if you want a good Christain cartoon with pop culture references, Veggie Tales is a thing!
My grandparents made me watch this growing probably because their strict Christians and they love Tim Conway and don’t knotts as they watch stuff like Andy Griffith show and apple dumpling gang. I think I most like it now just because I find it nostalgic and because I find some of the stuff kinda funny because of how weird it is
Pop culture is absorbed even if you haven't seen the source material. For example, you can know a bunch of Star Wars quotes and iconic moments without having watched any of the films (this was me for quite a while). If you want an example of a Christian show that does this better (and probably what they were actually going for honestly), I think Veggietales is a really good one. There's a mix of pop culture references and jokes that will go over a child's head, but many of which my parents got a kick out of and would explain to me. It also came before Shrek, meaning by this review's logic Shrek is modeled after VeggieTales 👍👍👍
@@hahasamian8010 Again, though, that's assuming that their overzealous parents ever watched Terminator without getting overly disgusted with the violence without thinking of the context. With Veggietales, though, yeah, I'm sure some cool Christian adults watch that. Hell, I'm agnostic and I love OG Veggietales.
@WillieManga Memes are transmitted through more than one method. If a quote is iconic, people will use it. Even someone who doesn't know the source material will often absorb the quote because others are using it. You're also kinda assuming Christians live in a bubble and that they don't appreciate secular art-- people like that are a very small minority. My parents are actual ministers and sheltered us from a number of things, but they still appreciated pop culture references like this one. That's not a hypocritical thing either, they just wouldn't expose small children to that violence, which makes perfect sense to me
Dude you should look into a film called Ruby Princes Runs Away, it isn't religious, but it has a hamfisted "don't run from your problems" message, and it is a low budget mess that I loved as a child. Seems like something you'd love to hate.
I don't remember if I saw this movie. I know I definitely saw the prequel, which was about lying. I remember that they took one verse out of context: "The truth will set you free" (John 8:32), which wasn't even about lying, but Jesus Himself.
I used to love .Herme as a kid little did I know how deprived I was of actually d good movies back then that is of course till I was allowed to watch Disney
Justice, hear me out, and do not delete this comment. Just because Max Lucado believes in traditional marriage does not mean that he is a bad person. If you are really looking for a evangelical who is really crazy, look at Robert Jeffress, who called the gay community as “filthy", "degrading ... beyond description", and "so much more prone to disease.” Max Lucado, as Wikipedia says in the next sentence, says he doesn’t support “gay-bashing.” That’s just what Max believes. Cut him some slack. Also, I don’t think that Shrek is what this movie wants to be. It wants to be more like a mixture of Shrek and VeggieTales, which also has pop-culture references. I know that Gene Lions from this movie podcast called Shat The Movies said that just because some of his friends are working for the police, (which he doesn’t support) he doesn’t shame the individual. Also, calling Christian cartoons hypocritical because of indoctrination like the LGTBQA+ community doesn’t really add up because the gay cartoons can be traced to 1983 , while Christian cartoons date back to 1956 or 1961 in terms of full-fledged series. Just wanted to let you know that.
I 100% agree. Also unrelated but what completely saves this special to me critically is the fact that Tim Conway and Don Knotts are giving their all in their performances. Also Hermie & Friends was one of Knotts final performances before his death. Not this specific episode but a later one.
I agree. I am lgbtq while also being a Christian and to be honest I don’t have a problem with Christians or people in general that don’t like the lgbtq but decide not to bash or hurt those that are
Weirdest coincidence: a clip from Hermie was just used in an episode of Nathan Fielders "The Rehearsal" on HBO
Really? Which episode was that?
wait, you mean Depression is CHEATING ON ME??!!
wait you were together? she never told me that!
Omg I knew she was a player!
This is the first time I actually watched a movie review for a movie I watched as a kid. I can't believe my grandma made me watch this-
Same my grandma also made me watch this as a kid
So the lesson is you’re not good as you are and to not love yourself until God makes you better?
I got this movie on a CD when I was three for Christmas 😂
This seems like Max tried to make a christian version of A Bug's Life.
we see hermie as a caterpillar at the end of this video implying this video chronologically takes place before him turning into a caterpillar
9:34 You forgot a question.
W H A T C H R I S T I A N C H I L D I S G O I N G T O K N O W W H A T T E R M I N A T O R

I remember this… thankful i am no longer a believer. Never thought I would ever say that but its true now

OMG, I'd completely forgotten about Hermie. I'm suddenly remembering all those weird Hermie specials.
Depression? I barely even know her!
Dude how the living shit do you only have 650 subscribers? Your videos are *sloppy chef's kiss*. Just amazing.
Just the premise of this cartoon is idiotic. How does a caterpiller not know it's going to turn into a butterfly?
"God, are you awake?"
(in the most mentally spent, most exhausting tone of voice) "heh....**Always HERMIE**"
Man I remeber Hermy
Seriously though, you don't need to beleive in God to feel special. Hopefully you all can keep that in mind. And if you want a good Christain cartoon with pop culture references, Veggie Tales is a thing!
This is decent but I do agree VeggieTales is ten times better.
VeggieTales was my childhood.
I grew up on this omg. So much Max Lucado, especially Punchinello, but We owned every Hermie movie lol.
I remember loving this as a kid
RIP Tim Conway and Don Knotts

For whom was this Terminator reference even made? The kids, the little kids, who binged through all the Terminator movies BEFORE they watched this?
Ha, assuming their fundamentalist parents would let them watch Terminator. That's cute. In seriousness, though, I'm confused about the reference too.

Everyone is special, unless youre gay.
Makes me really hate something i liked as a kid.

I am. Thank you :)
I hope you're feeling better. If not, you can always ask God. Who will reply in a Schwarzenegger impression.
