I think I finally understand what Break Open is supposed to do. It's supposed to take away your opponent's ability to control when they morph their creatures, e.g. you could force them to morph a Willbender when there are no other spells to target. Which is a huge gamble, because you might also hit something they do have a target for, but I guess that's why it's red.

    • @astuteanansi4935
      @astuteanansi4935 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Here's the thing though, you're in *red.* You know how else red can achieve the exact same effect? By literally just shocking the 2/2 morph creature. Costs one less mana, even!
In any other color this would've been a shitty card, but it's somehow *extra* shitty in a color that already has plenty of ways to remove creatures of this size

Here's usage (that I can remember of the top of my head) for some cards listed. Not saying they are all good, most are just janky but some are actually pretty interesting.
*Darksteel Relic* : Basically and indestructible Mox on an Urza deck, comparable to how Mox Amber works.
    *Kobolds* : Great for Winota.
*Force of Savagery* : Insane if you have any anthem effect or cads like Metallic Mimic.
*Scornful Egotist* : Jokes aside, very interesting for cards like Birthing Pod or Eldritch Evolution. It also can be used with Nahiri's Wrath and Blast of Genius
*Urza's Bauble* : Pretty good and expensive card actually, doesn't deserve an explanation but try "Ashnod, the Uncaring". (I use it)
*Tel-Lijad* : Works with Gitrog at least.
*Goblin Snowman* : Pair it with "Lure" and "Fight to the Death" and you get an instant meme.
*Chaoslace* : Counters red elemental blast.
*Zephyr Spirit* : Same thing as Goblin Snowman, but if it's still alive it can survive "Fight to the death" or "heat stroke"
*Dream Fighter* : Can be paired with Lure and actually survives "Heat Stroke" and so on. Out of all of these, one of the best since it's 3 cmc.
*Lupine Prototype* : Amazing for Selvala (I use it)
*Juju Bauble* : Infinite life with Brighthearth + Monolith combo.
*Myr Mindservant* : Works with cards like Mystic Forge, but it's a pain.
*Grip of Chaos* : The more players the better. Can be very chaotic on commander making a ton of cards backfire even. (Def will try)
*Arctic Merfolk* : Not the best card but ETBs are pretty strong, can find a lot of use actually.
*Wood elemental* : Well at least it works with Gitrog again.
*Rhystic Circle* : Costs that require generic mana and don't require tapping can be very dangerous. Infinite generic mana and you basically won't take damage.
*Arena* : It's actually cool if your cards have deathtouch. And if they're big enough, it's basically a free kill every turn. It works almost like effects that say "each opponent sacrifices a creature"
*Mage' Contest* : This card is fun tbh. Me and my friends used it once or twice when we where younger and had burn decks.
*Apocalypse Chime* : Is actually a metaphor for how we feel about homelands.
*Sky Swallower* : I believe Torpor Orb and "end turn effects" like Sundial of the Infinite work here.
*One with Death* : Busted with Stunning Reversal.
*Aysen Highway* : Since -walk effects are rare to nonexistant these days, this basically makes you army of 1/1 soldiers unblockable (I'm trying). Dies to Apocalypse Chime tho.
*Alladin's Lamp* : You can sac a token to get it back from your graveyard with Goblin Welder. It makes for a great activation of Smelting Vat, specially if you have Brighthearth or Ashnod. When it dies you can also get basically any artifact back from your graveyard with Scrap Trawler. Just went tryhard on this one.
*Psychic Surgery* : Actually makes some tutors useless.
*Rishadan Pawnshop* : Saves your bird from a bolt.
*Rakalite* : Goes well with infinite generic mana again, and can be sacced for Smelting Vat to get basically 2 of anything in an artifact deck.

Cephalon Snitch was printed on the black heavy Torment set. At the time, the best removal spells for Block Constructed, which I don't think has been a format in a long while (think Hyper Standard: latest 3 associated sets only), and Standard Constructed, were all black. To combat this, most decks started running pro-black creatures or ways to gain protection from a chosen color. (there were a lot). Hence, Cephalid Snitch got printed.

Teferi's Isle is a bit hard to use; it comes into play tapped, then phases out during your next untap step (this untaps it btw). It remembers that it already came into play, so it won't repeat the "comes into play tapped" trigger, so when it finally phases back in on the next turn, you can actually use it. I used Ley Druid or Candelabra of Tawnos to untap it back in the day for both immediate use and to get more mana out of it, but yeah, the investment required to make it better than a basic island is rough. Amulet of Vigor would be nice with it now, I guess. Basically the only reason this thing was ever used was for busted Armageddon, Jokelhaups, Balance, Pox strategies; you blow up lands when it's phased out, and then it phases in to give you 2 mana on your first rebuild turn.

Darksteel Relic has only two purposes. 1) Aids in you achieving metalcraft (you know the 3 artifacts needed) by at least it cost zero mana and it has i bonus of being indestructible. It has one other very fringe bonus if you have a If you have out a2) phylactery Lich the relic can be the artifact you put you Phylactery counter on. This way this Lich will remain indestructible just like the Darksteel Relic. Having a 5/5 indestructible creature is kinda nice.

53:05 "whenever X, Y" is a trigger, so the player shuffles, putting the trigger on the stack and then you get to stack their deck a little after - this is the exact same way every trigger is worded, so the wording is fine.

Granted there are better things to do with infinite mana, but Juju Bubble can gain you infinite life, which makes it very hard for them to kill you.
I guess it just adds another stupid win condition to a deck that tries to generate infinite mana.
Now if you can stack infinite Myr Mindservant deck shuffles, your opponent concedes immediately and you're disqualified.
Teferi's Isle from what I can tell works like this:
Turn 1: Play, it enters tapped.
Turn 2: During untap step it phases out.
Turn 3: During untap it phases in, then untaps. **This is why someone was saying every three turns. But it's actually every other turn after this. The problem is it wasn't on the field during the untap step of the turn you play it.**
Turn 4: During untap it phases out.
Turn 5: during untap it phases in, then untaps.

I got a urza land artifact deck with four Candelabras and bunch of clockworks, rocket launchers etc. I recall having few rakalites as well, as mana was definitely not an issue and Rakalites were a way to keep me and my stuff invulnerable during opponents turn. Many years ago, I made a large multi-player deck that included four (yes four) Chaoslaces. The deck played COP Red and added Blue Elemental Blast + Hydroblast. (These weren't the main theme of the deck, but filled a function). Other players got so used to the combo that as soon as I tapped one red mana, they'd all go in unison -- "It's red -- it's dead". Of course, I had ways of cycling my graveyard back into my library, so this happened a LOT.
Capable of eliminating multiple opponents at once, the deck was a hell of a lot more competitive than it may sound. Though I'm sure it would struggle against modern power-crept decks.

phasing does not trigger ETB's or LTB's so the land would not enter the battlefield taped when it phased in and would not trigger any leave the battlefield effects from other cards, because the card is not actually leaving the battlefield.

What's funny is, when I was a sort of newbie I used a few of those do nothing cards and actually won a few tournaments with them.
for Chaoslace, I got 4 of them and the blue Laces and use all of the blue/red elemental blasts (and at the time Ice Age just came out with Hydroblast, etc), so I mashed all of that together with some removal and clones and howling mines and it actually worked. I was chaoslacing lands and Blue elemental blasting them... and my god if I played against a person using blue or red or both, it wouldn't be a fun time for them. It was so janky, I loved it.

Teferi's Isle (the phasing land) might be okay if it gave you 3 mana of any color instead of two blue. Or if it didn't enter the battlefield tapped.

Force of Savagery is hilarious with the Golgari Troll legend that gives all creatures in gy Scavenge = to Cmc also the Myr Mind master I use in Artifact Combo with Mystic Foundry so I never get stuck on lands. Colfenor's plans are a Doomsday benefit card :) pseudo draw your doomsday pile and never deck out. One with Death with Hive mind your opponent loses before you do.

    Teferi island.
    You play enter tapped
Turn 2 in your upkeep phases out
Turn 3 you phase in, and you can use and add 2 mana
    Turn 4 phases out ...
    Turn 5 2 mana

    Darksteel Relic + Ensoul Artifact
Force of Savagery did come out the set right after Gaea's Anthem came out as a green Glorious Anthem. Today you might drop a Sylvan Anthem right before it or it could work if you had something that would give it +1/+1 (or at least +x/+1 counters) on it when it enters the battlefield. Rhythm of the Wild might help.
Straw Golem: If "successful" meant it had to resolve instead just getting played it might be more interesting.
Cephalid Snitch came out in the black HEAVY Torment set although it does seem there were relatively few Pro-Black creatures in the block in white and green.
Kudzu is eternal land destruction that you pass back and forth.

I would use darksteel relic i a tezzeret master of tbe bridge deck. Usd some copy cards to copy it. That way, your opponent cant destroy them to ruin your plan to hit them with that plus on tezzeret. I know people is going to say there are better cards for it, but this costs 0 mana, you have 3 of these and you can copy them. Plus with tezzerets static of every artifact you have lowers your stuff by that much is good. The 0 mana thopter and this you got 6 mana reduction. It has a purpose, it not completely useless

Urza Bauble is a deck thinner. You play it, you draw a card in the next upkeep. The "look at a card at random" is totally secondary. The card would have been played even without that effect.

  • @cydonyn

I mean, cheerios was a deck in legacy for a little while along with Crimson Kobolds, Crookshank Kobolds, you would also run Kobolds of Kher Keep and any other other 0 drop creatures you wanted, with glimpse of nature to keep drawing cards, which lets you keep playing more 0 drops, ideally you then have some sort of green mana generation, I think it ran Gaea's Cradle, and crop rotation, so you can get the Cradle, then play Beast Master's Ascension, turn your board sideways, and useually win given everything resolved I don't think Cheerios has seen any play in the last 5 years, but it was a fun deck.

1:29 Kobolds of Kher Keep goes infinite with Cloudstone Curio + Rograkh Son of Rohgahh + Impact Tremor's. That seems like it's a lot to set up, but it's easier if you just play all of the 0 mana creatures and have Rograkh as your commander. There's other effects like Impact Tremor's. The deck is mostly just loot spells and combo pieces. I built it just to see what would happen, and it's not that bad. I've pulled it off in cedh a couple of times.

Mindservant actually has some usefulness to it if you have access to any kind of a card that allows you to look at the top card of your library. Pretty expensive, but it's technically speaking not nothing.
Plus somehow it's really endearing. It's just a little dude that wants to help you shuffle.

  • @MrReaperHand

Brake open works on more than just morph, it works on any card that is face down. Such as the planeswalkers that are creatures first and then transform flipped. They are face down since one side is the back while the other is the face.
Still a bad card, but it does affect more than morph. People just always only refer it to morph.
Lupin Prototype only requires A player, not the one you are attacking. So you have no cards, any other player has no cards, doesn't matter. As long as any player doesn't have cards in hand this thing does something.

Scornful Egotist while a bad card I believe there was a "mana cost matters" trope in the block it was released which allowed for some janky but decent things to happen
