Magic but Cards Do the Opposite

- What deck would you play if you knew that all your card's abilities are reversed? We play Magic on opposite day and try to win when the cards don't do what we expect them to.

More videos please.
Shoutout to Carl for tossing almost 400€ worth of cardboard through the air because it's too complicated. Really living the dream right there
I didn't realize it was so expensive until I got to that part in editing the video 😅
Right‽ Like sure it's a headache of a card to read and process even under normal circumstances, but still!
I had a visceral reaction to this 😂
when I saw him chuck that I died on the inside
I thought it had to be a proxy or something. That was a real one?! Ouch.
These are so weird, but that reverse Demonic Pact feels really flavourful - you're the demon, giving your opponent a ton of benefits, until they run out of options and are forced to make you win the game!
Wouldn't Demonic Pact do nothing because you can only choose an effect that has already been chosen?
@fabblwaps the rules for opposite day are fickle
jackeea??? olexa reference??
I think it could really be printed, with a few tweaks.
Yeah agreed reversed Demonic Pact is a really sweet card.
As a law student I'm in incredible pain watching how inconsistent the "opposite" interpretations are. As a magic fan I laughed my ass off xd Great video
Yeah imo they needed a consistent system, eg. "For each ability on the card, replace one word in its ability text with its antonym -- choosing the word that would make the new ability most interesting, when considered in a vacuum." That's still not airtight of course, but I'd have liked it better than the arbitrary swapping they used.
I think especially Seths inconsistency of those opposite day effects brought a lot of humour in this matches.
Being consistent and alway equal would surely be too complicated, as this was only for fun and the players did not know, what they will get...
Phil got absolutely dumpstered at the end and I'm completely here for it.
He basically got to dictate what happens with each card, and that was fun.
Counter suddenly became copy halfway through 😂
I thought Seth did a great job. He made great calls, on the fly, all on camera, which is harder than it sounds.
Drawing from an empty library should be an auto win. 😅
We had not considered that 🤔 you are right that it is opposite day after all
-C
@@CardmarketMagicThe video is "Cards do the opposites" not "game rules do the opposites" so I think you're good.
I've wanted to write the same comment :)
@@bennettpalmer1741 Yeah otherwise you have to start asking when you can cast instants/sorceries, what manacosts even are (mana generation? what do lands do then?), whether trample heals your opponent for excess damage or for that matter whether combat damage heals.
Flipping card text is already a lot of chaos, trying to flip everything would just make the game completely incoherent imo.
@@Gabriel64468 Bring back mana burn! Lands get rid of that mana so you don't damage yourself.
You can see the moment on Phil's face when the betrayal from Seth hit.
"What the hell man??" written on his face hahahaha
He had to end the game somehow or this would have gone on forever.
@@Bloodshark123 yeah but the opposite of lose is win, so seth decided to make him lose instead of win by not making it entirely opposite.
Ya but was he live? Or did he just get the deck list and these are all pre recorded responses?
it's funny to hear "i win the game!" then they continue playing like nothing happened
I was worried that opposite effects enforced in a robotic way would be a bit boring but actually having a third party decide the effect on the fly while the players don't know was a genius idea and the video was hilarious
My interpretation of Leveler would have been "you put all cards you own in exile into your library"
I really wanted it to just get him another library
I was really hoping he would get a second library.
"Put all cards you own into your library."
I was hoping for "manifest target opponent's library"
I know manifest isn't the opposite mechanically, but they're pretty opposite semantically and flavorfully.
"Shuffle a whole other deck into your library."
Phil should've still gained the life, it's an additional cost which means it happens before the counter can even be cast, just like how countering a toxic deluge still loses it's controller the life.
True, not that it really mattered in the end.
@@Red-Tower no of course, but still
You are correct! We simply forgot since we were so busy figuring out how we'd end that game 😅
-C
Thank you that was bugging me
@@CardmarketMagic Yeah it's not a big deal, just wanted to point it out
I enjoy how arbitrary it is that some counter spells counter while others now copy! The opposite of consistent formatting and sensible judge rulings is arbitrary capriciousness 😂
Yeah I expected the first counter spell to copy the spell, but it was normal, and then the next one copied, and then countered again after. Seth!! Haha
This is hands down the best mtg channel on TH-cam currently. I'm feeling really burned out on magic at the moment, to the point where I can't see myself picking it up again soon. But your stuff is so creative and silly and out there that I still watch it. You're the only mtg channel I'm currently subscribed to. Keep shining, you beautiful Bastards!
I'm absolutely touched by this comment. This is our favourite hobby so I truly hope we'll convince you to find joy in it someday :) in the meantime, I hope you enjoy the entertainment. Have a wonderful day!
-C
@@CardmarketMagic holy shit, a direct answer!
You are a very good reminder of the joy in the hobby ;)
Thank you so much!
On opposite day drawing with no cards left should win the game?
We had not considered that 😅 I guess you are right. We should have asked Seth Bot
-C
I would Say no as Seth chose to not break rules by making a player losing mana from a mana pool. Only text on cards got overwritten by opposite day. @CardmarketMagic there you go
At 1:15 I’m surprised Jamin didn’t search up two more lotus fields. Seems like a pretty good card.
I wonder if it was singleton except for basics to get more funny rulings
@@donb7519I think so given they didn't search for extra copies of the cards in their hand later.
We only played one of each card :)
-C
Would have been risky given opposite day, but he should have gone for Dark Depths + Thespian's Stage
@@CardmarketMagic You are so creative :) i love your card duels
Hilarious that on all the pact cards lose became win but for the phage it was still lose the game lol
That last call was hilarious, Seths betrayal was real! That being said wouldn't Phil still have gained the 69,000 (Nice) life? Since its an additional cost to cast the spell.
I came down here to say the same thing!
(21:40)
Wait a minute, Jamin! It's opposite day! You don't lose from not being able to draw! You WIN from not being able to draw!
This challenge makes the Leveler lore-accurate to how they were in Mirrodin
Reverse lotus field should have been "return two lands from graveyard to battlefield" as thats the opposite of sacrificing
I'd also want to remove its mana ability (or change it to something useless like "lose mana"), as gaining 2 lands is plenty good enough without getting the card's huge upside _as well._ Opposite-day cards should be good at the opposite thing from what they're usually good for; but Lotus Field simply had its downside turned into an upside.
@@Tzizenorecin that case every land would lose you mana, no?
@@franslair2199 In principle, but since that breaks the game completely, we would need to think a bit and find a creative solution, or just leave basic lands alone.
chains of mephistopheles opposite’d roughly translates to “if a player would discard (except for the first card they discard in their cleanup phase) instead they draw then discard.” then the next line references “if they Don’t draw,” which could never happen
There are all sorts of effects that can prevent the draw. Mostly by replacing it with something else, like Notion Thief
I think they didn't want to make things too complicated for the viewers, but just make that funny moment with the card. And given the vibe of this video i'm totally ok with that
That was a rollercoaster of emotions from start to end. Love it!
Chains of Mephistopheles seems to be straightforward. After a player's draw step, if they were to draw a card, they discard instead. After discarding by this effect, they are then allowed to draw a card. However, if they can't discard by this effect, then they mill one instead.
So, opposite day Chains should be: "If a player were to discard a card, they draw a card instead. If a player draws a card by this effect, they must are then allowed to discard a card. However, if they cannot discard by this effect, they must return one card from their graveyard to the top of their library."
Simple, "they must are then allowed", thank you for clarifying :P
exactly!
Seth doesn't understand how Chains works, so you can't expect him to figure out what the opposite of it is.
Phil should've still gained 69,000 life in the last game as it was part of Toxic Deluge's cost, not its effect
Good point! We just missed it because we were so concentrated on them finding a way to end the game 😅
-C
13:41 I love how Thoralf responded to death's shadow, with a card that wouldnt otherwise be able to counter it xD
and how he had an answer for everything phil threw at him, just brilliant!
Carl casually chucking a 380€ card over his shoulder though
I did not realize how expensive it was at the time 😅
-c
@@CardmarketMagic At least it's only lightly played now!
@@CardmarketMagic
At least it was in a card sleeve. Hopefully that protected it well.
Opposite day Brainstorm seems busted in Dredge: Discard 3 cards, then return 2 cards from your graveyard to your hand. It’s like an instant-speed Tortured Existence
This is my favourite video format! I love it when you guys play with crazy rules. Loving the collabs with mtggoldfish, btw.
that was a fun surprise!
Kudos to Carl for casually throwing a neigh expensive card to the void for being too complicated.
I did not realize how expensive it was when I tossed it 😅 I panicked during the video editing when I had to look up the price
-C
You basically gave me a favor. I'd do the same given the chance.
Y'all could totally do an AI-moderated opposite day. Here's what Bing says about opposite-day Panharmonicon:
"That sounds like a fun game! 😄
The opposite of “If an artifact or creature entering the battlefield causes a triggered ability of a permanent you control to trigger, that ability triggers an additional time.” could be something like:
“If an artifact or creature leaving the battlefield causes a triggered ability of a permanent you don’t control to trigger, that ability doesn’t trigger at all.”
This would mean that any effects that happen when an artifact or creature dies, is exiled, or is returned to hand would be negated for your opponents, while your own effects would still work normally. This could be very powerful in a game of Magic, especially if you have ways to sacrifice or bounce your own permanents for value."
Although this is really fun, there is no reason to use an AI when we have a perfectly functioning Seth-Bot :)
This deserves to be printed as an actual card, let's name it Disharmonicon!
That opposite effect is kind of awesome, I could see it being like... a black or white enchantment, probably white, like... "Respect for the Lost" or something... wouldn't effect much, but it would hose specific strategies.
The thought vessel was so funny 🤣🤣Jin gitaxias being my favorite card makes it even better.
Opposite Thought Vessel is a fine niche card, imo. It's a free "One with Nothing" at the end of every turn.
@@Tzizenorec doesn't mean its not funny?
I always love it when you guys do a "I have no idea what this card's gonna do" video! How about one where you give people who know nothing about Magic just the title and/or the art of a card and they have to make up what it does?
This would be a great idea for a way to get the community to vote for the card texts! :)
-C
@@CardmarketMagic actually, if they never played magic, don't even hide the text and art and let them figure lmao
Pick cards with confusing texts like lagrella, the magpie and other hard to understand stuff
The thought vessel should have been able to make mana of any color, since it was making colorless before.
maybe Leveler should've been "when it leaves the battlefield" instead of when it enters the battlefield?
That would also make the card just 1% more balanced
Only 1% more yes
-C
As always, the editing makes this an amazing watch. "Jamin CAN play creature spells" got a hearty cackle from me.
Seth it is an acceptable replacement for AI generated cards. I demand this be a recurring segment
Your choice of hats is amazing
Thank you :D
-C
Why does this bring so much joy?
XD your weirdness is your superpower.
All your content is unique and mot of it excellent.
I hope we see more frank carsten!
I'm editing another Frank video for next week :) I hope you enjoy it!
-C
@@CardmarketMagic thx for telling!
I love how you can't really argue with any of Seth's rulings, but you also can't really predict any of them.
I feel like Seth's ruling was'nt consistent enough, but I respect his willingness to come up with creative opposites for each individual card.
I actually understood chains of mephistopheles quite well. The "if a player doesn't draw a card this way" even has methods of triggering, because of effects like Hullbreacher and Narset (maybe not on opposite day though)
Seth did Phil real dirty with that Phage 😂
If it would have been played with Unset 'Vibes' The Offer you can't refuse would have been the offer you can refuse ... like Phil politely refusing the Counterspell from toffel😂❤❤❤
The last game was by far the best. Mysterious Cowboy vs mysterious carrot knight. The ancient rivalry of opposite day😂
My opinion:
Opposite of hexproof would be: It becomes a flagbearer, if targets for a spell or ability would be chosen, it should target at least one flagbearer if able.
Oppesite chains simplified:
START If you where to discard a card (for example someone plays thoughtsieze) THEN
REPLACE IT WITH You get to loot instead
HOWEVER IF you are unable to draw a card for any reason (for example, Maralen of the mournsong is in play)
THEN, you get to return a card from your graveyard to your hand
4:26 That death's shadow screech was so cool!
8:37 Oh _god_ chains of mephistopholes, LMAO! just... "nevermind"
10:35 I think I know what you were thinking _'Carlos',_ "if target player has *anything but* 10 life, they *gain* 10 life", and since a player with any health over 10 would keep gaining health, they would never have 10 life, therefore they would have infinite life.
22:21 This must be a new record of some kind, Phil and Thoralf must have won the game like 5 times each in a single match.
Wow that ending hahahahaha. This was very funny, I loved the inconsistencies.
This was a lot of fun! I'd love to see this pop up again every now and then.
It'd have actually been a really good April 1st goof, but I'm happy to have it now. ^_^
God i love you guys, I'm one minute into this video and im totally sold on this
Surprised that Jamin didn't search for more Lotus Fields immediately lol
I’d like to call a flavor fail, on Opposite Day casting the spell “an offer you can’t refuse” should become “an offer you can refuse” thus adding the line, your opponent can refuse this spell, thus countering it
9:22 Carl just casually yeeting a 400 euro card
I didn't realize it was that expensive 😅 I panicked when I saw the price whilst editing
Yet another high quality video from you guys with a unique twist to it! Keep up the good work. :) Must be rather fun filming these more "out there" ideas.
Yall have the coolest ideas for videos
I screamed when Carl threw that Chains of Mephistopheles. Thanks for the heart attack guys!
I didn't realize it was so expensive 😅
-C
For opposite Chains of Mephistopheles I would've just gone with "At the beginning of each player's draw step that player draws an additional card."
Lmao, that was a mess but it was hilarious! I love how there was no consistency in what the opposites did.
Phil was absolutely robbed there 😂
On Opposite Day, An Offer You Can't Refuse becomes An Offer You Can Refuse
You get: countered
I get: stuff
This was exhilarating chaos. Well done!
I'd rule opposite Leveler to have you shuffle all cards you own in exile into your library
Final Fortune would've been great in this format. :D
It was in my deck! But I never drew it 😅
-C
Putting Sorrow’s Path in the deck was just plain mean lmao
I really enjoyed this in large part because I have never seen anything like it being done. Who cares if the rules of opposites weren't consistent? This was great 👍
I think leveler should instead do:
"put all your cards from exile into your Library, then shuffle."
He still should gain the life since it was an additional cost to casting it, right?
I LOVED the death's shadow sound. Wish the real card makes that noise when you play it in real life
While i could complain about the inconsistency of reversing one part of the card to make it function the opposite, or reversing every word of the card to completely change the effect, i'm just glad i got to watch that insanity
Wow, this was so silly. I got a good laugh when Chains of Mephiwhateveritdoes was played. Also, that seems like shenanigans for the first "lose the game" on Phage to not be changed to "win the game", which screwed Phil over. Yeah, opposite day is indeed very inconsistent.
Sir, Deluge is additional cost to cast, Phil has 69,014 life
Who knew monoblack was a better monowhite deck on opposite day
This is such a weird and incredibly cool idea, love it
I'd make "an offer you can refuse" counter target creature spell unless it's controller pays 2
22:10 Phil should still gain life because it is an additional cost
You are correct 😅 we were so busy trying to figure out how they would end this game that we missed it!
-C
2:50 i think healing salve should've been "lose 3 life or the next time target source would deal damage, it deals that much +3 (giant growth)"
Would be pretty funny to see tomer bolting himself is what i'm getting at here.
lol, Carl just casually throws a $1,000 card over his shoulder
I would argue that on this day, if you would draw from your library but can't, you win the game.
He threw away a €380 card, ouch 🤣🤣🤣
I didn't know it was that expensive 😅😅😅 I only realized when editing the video and panicked
-C
It's okay, you're doing the commander community a favor by removing all of them from circulation. 🤣
15:05 I love how Brainstorm becomes U: discard a card.
A very missed opportunity for Abyssal Persecutor to read:
"Reach, Defender
You can win the game, your opponent can lose the game".
Game 1, the player should have won for not being able to draw a card….
At 3:23 the description for Leveler should read something more like this:
When Leveler LEAVES play, opponent shuffles all cards in exile back into their deck.
This must be the most epic crossover in the history :D
Title should be "Seth decides who wins the game with funny and inconsistent interpretations"
opposite of Chains is basically if you discard, instead rummage. The only time you couldn't rummage is if your library is gone and in that case you draw from the top of your graveyard instead.
Juju bubble: pay 2: deal 1 life damage to the opponent.
I'm loving all of these crossover videos
Excellent video all around, but the excited text popup with the exclamation mark every time Phil uselessly wins the game is probably my favourite thing.
The opposite of you may not play creature spells, should be you may ONLY play creature spells.
I feel like there is a wrong judge call on "An offer you cant refuse".
He should be able to refuse, that the spell gets countered. "An offer you can refuse"
"Sacrifice all permanents" I thought this would search for EVERY permanent in the library and add ALL of them to the battlfield, lmao that would have been chaotic af
So did Phil, seemingly 😅
-C
"Today is opposite day!"
Universe implodes
In the last game, I think Phil should have gained 69,000 life, not that it changed anything.
You are correct 😅 we were so busy trying to figure out how they would end this game that we missed it!
-C
that Thoralf Phil game at the end was amazing 😂
someone was biased towards Thoralf though :D
Actually, the opposite of black in Magic is both green and white - so anti-Dark-Ritual is one Selesnya hybrid mana for "Choose one: Add three white mana to target opponent's mana pool or Add three green mana to target opponent's mana pool"
Seth definitely didn't change that Phage more, so it would end the nuttiness.
Okay this is kind of awesome. This in a commander game would be insane.
I'd argue that on opposite day, when you can't draw a card from your library, you instead win the game.
Only a minute and a half in, but in the spirit of how ludicrous this is, why not grab 2 more lotus fields with the first one, grab 3 other lands and a 4th lotus field, and finally get 2 more lands 👀
The fact reverse chains of meph would actually be relevent when he had to discard to handsize...
So much lawls on this one.
Yeah both players having Abyssal Persecutor on Opposite day means the game NEVER ENDS!!!
That's what it means normally!
