I appreciate the fact that you use an objective, repeatable list of criteria to evaluate pet foods. I've seen a lot of veterinarian videos on food that can be summed up as [one of the five "WSAVA compliant" brands = 100% good], no matter what, and [not "WSAVA compliant" = 100% bad] no matter what. Using the objective criteria may get you to many of the same results as the above but it is based on objective criteria and not "just because." I appreciate that.
Thank you, I tried to make a system that was repeatable, objective, and easy to follow so everyone can do it and not rely on a random Internet personality to tell them how to do it. Teach a man to fish…..
I watched this even though I've already found good food for both my dogs based on optimal nutrition and don't have a large breed dog. 😅 I've had Wellness recommended to me a few times (not by vets!), but I'm not really impressed with them either. Though it's always nice when dog food companies post all that nutritional information for us!
Thank you for this review! Do you have a video for giant breed adults? Adopting a Pyrenean Mastiff from a rescue soon and no idea what he needs - 110lb+ !
I'm reading the numbers from the Small Animal Clinical Nutrition book for dogs >25kg crude fat range is 10-25% but the numbers you had in the video are 8-12%. I must be missing something? "To provide a DM energy density between 3.5 to 4.5 kcal/g, between 10 and 25% DM fat is required;"
It’s because in the chapter about preventing skeletal dz for large breed puppy dogs they recommend an even lower fat at 8 percent so I used that number to give a more optimal range. I pulled those numbers from an earlier version of text and this newer version spread them out for some reason.
Well NBC really blew this one! Ironically I did a video on large breed puppy and half way thru discovered the great info on the Wellness website. Compared the numbers to Science Diet. As you state, of all the diets available, this one ain’t it! Love how you explain things!
Hey thank you for helping me out on the fromm dog food. My daughter was telling me about the ORIJEN dog food. Do u have any thoughts on that. Much appreciated.
First off, thank you for all of your videos! I’m constantly watching them. I’m currently feeding this to my Cane Corso, what kibble would you recommend for a large breed puppy.? I hope you see this comment.
How long should a large breed puppy be fed large breed puppy? The reason is Purina ProPlan LB puppy states for under Two years but Hills LB puppy is under One? My daughter and I both have Berners, hers is 13 mo and is on PPP LB puppy chicken and rice. My girl is 11mo is back on Hill's LB puppy after being on Hills GI Biome for 4 months.
Which food do you recommend for a 5 month old Cane corso ? I’ve been using Blue buffalo Wilderness puppy food Mixed with Chicken hearts Beef Veggies etc !
You want a good specific for large breed puppy and be careful not to add any protein to It or you will throw off the case:phos ratio wich is very important. Puppy foods scoring 7-10 th-cam.com/play/PLpfecaMYsipIV_f-gpYKQPVDszowFCbLU.html
hey doc quick question, if a dog food fits the guaranteed analysis for a large breed puppy but isn't listed/named as a puppy food is it okay to feed that to a puppy
N&D Tropical Selection Canine Salmon, Spelt, oats and Tropical Fruits Adult Medium & Maxi recipe is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance
Here is the guaranteed analysis crude protein 27.00%; crude fat 16.00%; crude fiber 2.90%; moisture 9.00%; crude ash 7.90%; Calcium 0.90%; Phosphorus 0.80%; Fat is a bit high for a large breed puppy but that’s it.
Just wondered what your opinion was, on other YT vets who keep pushing "the ingredient list"? Keep pushing "the first 3-5 ingredients". Some of them sound exactly like "the pet food marketers" you and "The Pet Food Puzzle Guy" talk about all the time.I only ask, because if they are veterinarians, wouldn't they want us to realize, it's the nutrients, not the ingredients?
I honestly don’t watch any veterinary YT so I can’t speak to that directly but I would say in general there will always be ( no matter the profession) people who will take the easy way out and the way that is most popular and gets the most positive feedback. It’s easy because you don’t have to take the time to explain to someone who maybe is at a different knowledge level than you why something that seems to make sense is not correct. It is the classic case of telling people what they want to hear vs what they need to hear and when they get rewarded and positive feedback for the behavior it perpetuates the behavior. I get so many hateful comments about how uneducated I am or how I have been manipulated by pet food companies and how I cannot use my 8 years of higher education to read the numbers and make up my own logical conclusions. Wouldn’t it be easier and get more subscribers and make money if I just told everyone what they wanted to hear. But that’s not me and I want better for you all. I hate to tell my clients who were only trying to do good it’s there fault their dog got diabetes, or renal disease or HGE or any other number of diseases because a marketing team convinced them not to trust there vet. So I decided I would be the odd man out and it’s not been easy, and I had to stop for a year and center myself and I’m Glad I did because I hope I’m teaching some logical sense to at least a few people. So yeah, team nutrients first.
Entertaining video. I have family in Wasilla, Alaska. The high was minus 20 today. I do appreciate your dedication. Soldiering on in such inhuman conditions. LOL Wellness was one of the brands I fed the kittens before I caught them. Between Panda getting sick and your videos explaining calcium and phosphorus levels, I stopped. Wellness is owned by a private equity firm. That usually means profit over pets. Less than 1% of the ingredients in Wellness dry food comes from China.
What a trooper you are Doc. Thanks again for the consistent reviews. Go warm up. We are having floods hear where we normally don't. Stay safe.
HEY kislux I have been watching you for years and im so proud of where you have made it! I love you so much! Also thanks for making my day
another great, informative video. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Can you do an Orijen large puppy breed amazing grains review? Thanks!
Another excellent video… Thank you! And thanks for freezing for us! If I could subscribe twice I would 😅
Any time!
Thanks for the video! I’m more aware of what to look for! 😊

I’m glad you find me that entertaining. I try to include some helpful nuggets outside of just the diet I’m reviewing.

I had a mastif. There is not a standard for giant adults but I’d go with something in the adult standard with added glucosamine and msm

I’m really wondering why NBC picked this one???
I gave the author a month to respond and she said she would "look into it" but never got back to me.
@@AnimalDocRea I wonder if there’s money involved in the picks? Just kidding, who knows?

Could you please review Arden grange large breed puppy?

I transition no later than 1 yr. Growth plates close at 9 months so no need to feed puppy longer than a year for any size
What will I do if I ever disagree with you????
I’m sure we can civilly disagree should the day ever come
What large breed puppy food would you recommend for a Rottweiler. She is currently around 70-80 pounds at around 10-11 months
I’d start a transition to adult. Adult Dog foods scoring 7-10

Then for some reason it’s for adults, it may fall short for puppies on parameters outside the parameters I’ve mentioned

No it’s wellness complete
