I just finished the paint job on my bike, and I have these tips for anyone who's thinking of using Rustoleum paint:
#1 Choose paint within the same product line, for instance Stops Rust Clean Metal Primer, Stops Rust color coat and Stops Rust Crystal Clear Enamel.
#2 Don't use Rusty Metal Primer over steel that isn't rusted, or the paint won't dry properly.
#3 Rustoleum single stage paint doesn't have a hardener in it, so you don't need to sand between coats, even if the paint has been drying for days or weeks. If you do sand, you have to wait for 48 hours to topcoat or clearcoat, otherwise your paint will react with the solvents you released by sanding, and the paint will wrinkle.
It's kinda easy to mess up Rustoleum, as I unfortunately found out, but in the end I got a good result and the paint is very durable. 😁👍

I've been happy with mine for a relatively low cost fun project. I did ok prep and think it looked great, but wasn't going for the gloss finish. I have a few chips in the dropouts but unlike other rattle can jobs I've done it hasn't spread and chipped away yet. About 1000 mostly winter miles without really being thrown around or slammed into racks, etc. I have a little chip from here I always sit on the top tube. I'll definitely consider this on all my cheapish projects. I did mediocre prep work and painted it in my bathtub and was happy with it .

This is crazy, I just did my new fixie/commuter bike with spray.bike two weeks ago. Turned out awesome actually, we will see how it holds up.
    My tips:
-Just like any paint, prep work is key. I used their metal primer on bare aluminum after a light sand to rough it up.
-Most of their solid colors require you to spray super close to the frame. It seems weird at first, but do it. Works way better, no worry of drips. This stuff will dry in mid air if you spray too far away, which leads to that gritty texture.
-The polishing with wax paper after solid colors is legit. Doesn't make a massive difference, but helps a little with rough spots, especially when adding other layers or graphics on top.
-If you have any really bad rough spots, let it cure for a few hours and then lightly wet sand with a super high grit (1500-2000). Add a small touch up spray of paint in that spot if necessary.
-Their clear coats and stuff like the metal flake and pocket clears are more like normal spray paint. Spray them from farther away, because they can drip. Do a few coats, with a few hours in between to let each coat harden.
-I wasn't super happy with how the gloss came out, wasn't shiny and glossy enough, although it was decently smooth.
-I ended up putting that 3M clear protective tape on a bunch of the tubes to help with durability, and it also made the gloss look GORGEOUS. Seriously. I ended up adding that tape to a bunch of the other tubes I wasn't planning on because it looks so good. Really brings out the metal flake too. Looks super wet paint glossy now.
-I'm just finishing up the bike and might make a little video showing it off or post it on reddit or something. The paint was worth the effort,

    • @chris1275cc
      @chris1275cc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Its "Graffiti Paint" probably rebranded Montana Gold. Graff paint is highly pigmented, low solvent and low pressure. The advantage is that its very easy to work with, dry's very quickly (seconds in the right conditions), requires fewer coats with little to no prep between them, doesn't run easy, is "high build" so it covers imperfections like scratches, and basically just eliminates all the annoying and time consuming things about painting with normal rattle cans.
The disadvantages are it can look "thick", feels rough, almost always has at least some "orange peel" or wave effect on close inspection, its hard to get a glossy finish and even the matte finish isn't great when compared to automotive matte paints (looks fine in isolation though).
When it comes to scratches and chips its about the same as any good rattle can paint, nothing special despite the claims.
If you are good with standard rattle cans and happy to take your time then there is little point in using them IMO, If you want to prep and paint a frame in a day and are happy to live with a less than stellar finish, go for it.
TLDR: Really easy to use with average results, good for people who are lazy and/or suck at painting with normal rattle cans.

Is the clear a urethane? If the paint is an enamel it's not going to be hard enough to stand up to chips and shit like you mentioned. I used Urethane automotive paint from TCP Global and 3 coats clear automotive urethane, then I sanded with 2000, 2500, and 3000 grit wet sand paper.
