Raptor Paint Job DIY - Part 2

- These vans are prone to rust so I went for some hardcore protection on the bottom half of the van. I used the 4 litre tintable kit costing around £100. The benefits of using this paint are endless. It's easy to apply, extremely tough, acts as sound deadening (perfect for the transit!), corrosion/ chemical resistant and it looks awesome! The whole paint job cost £200 including everything, much cheaper than a professional respray and I'm really pleased with the result.

Looks Good...how well has the Raptor stood up to the British elements...I have a MK7 Minibus I've converted and looking to use this as we live on the Coast full of salt 🤣
I also live by the sea and I think It’s a great coating, very strong but prep is everything. Make sure there are no traces of rust anywhere if you plan on using this as it has been great for a year but can see a few little rust bubbles now in places and it’s bugging me 😂 My fault as should have been more thorough with prep! But the issue I have now is that I will have to redo it all once I have repaired the rust bubbles 🙄 it still looks pretty presentable though and it was worth it 👍🏼

Wow great job the van looks very good. Have you under sealed the van I done mine a messy job but worth it I used Bilt and hamber expensive but good stuff.
Thanks mate 😄 very nice too, I’m yet to sort out the underside! Started brushing off the rust and painting it. I will most probably just paint with red oxide and use waxoyl/ oil to spray inside the chassis. Another video I’ve yet to make when time permits.

Thank you! I don’t have the van anymore but when I sold it the raptor was in pretty good shape for the most part. Had a few little peeling areas on the plastic bumper. Spend as much time as possible keying up the surface so it sticks and apply adhesion promoter to the plastic parts you’re spraying 😊

Thanks bud, you can tint it with any 2k colour code. Up to 10% tint. I ordered my kit of eBay and it came with the tint already mixed to the colour code I provided the with.

Hi, it was 4 tintable bottles if I remember right. It was a while ago that I did it now. It applies very thick so one even coat should be enough 👍🏼

Hi Carl, thanks mate. My compressor is 50litres. Bigger would be better for the job but it still managed to keep up pretty well.
wonderful vids of your mk5, its very hard to find any resources on the mk5 online, so its really handy you have made these many thanks. also a quick question do you have early anti roll bar droplinks or the the later version? im trying to find out how to get the droplink bush through the control arm, and i cant find any info anywhere! thanks in advance
Thank you! No problem at all, I will be doing my drop links soon and will post a video once I’ve worked it out myself 😂 I think I have the later version where the drop links are bent slightly 👍🏼🙂
It might help to get a blow torch on the rubber bush to remove it.
removals the easy bit, its getting the small rubber bush back through the control arm thats the pain! ive been thinking about getting a compressor and reconditioning it too, am so grateful that you have included how to service it on here, would you have rather have sprayed the entire van given the choice?
No problem. 🤔 maybe some sort of press to push it through the control arm. For my van I am glad I have sprayed half and hand painted half. The raptor gives the bottom very good protection against bushes & people scratching the paint, good protection against rust as well as slight road noise reduction. The top half is good because I can touch up with the rustoleum if I need to and it’s easier to clean than the raptor. Being quite tall it’s easier to clean the hand painted half 👍🏼 I also quite like the half and half look personally 😁 thanks for your comment 🙂

Used 4litre bottles in total, it’s surprising how far it goes being so thick.

Thinking of Raptor painting the bottom part of my van in black, from the trim line down, and maybe over the arches for a more 4x4 look. (van being white) the thing that worries me is the join where the original paint finishes and the raptor paint starts as in a few places there will be a visible line between the two. How is yours holding up? any peeling or problems where the paint line is?
Hi there, it’s holding up really well. I’m very impressed with it so far and it’s been on for around 6 months now. I’ve had one small chip on the plastic bumper but where it’s on metal or paint it has adhered really well. Hope this give you some reassurance. Should look awesome!
@@TurnersWorkshop97 Thanks for the speedy response. You think the chip happened due to plastics needing a bit more prep? As would intend do my bumpers and side trim too. Be nice if it all stayed one. 😅
Prep is definitely key maybe more keying up and adhesion promoter around the edges of the plastics but it looks more like a small stone chip. It’s not the end of the world and I will just use a small touch up pen to blend it in 🙂
