Yeah, except that I f the angle of a knife’s blade is 22 degrees for example, what that actually means is that EACH SIDE is only HALF of that number, 11 degrees in this example. 22 degrees per side might be ok for an ax, but it’s a little extreme for an ordinary knife just sayin’

super random, but if you put water in a spray bottle and sprayed it on sheets behind you, all the wrinkles will disappear! Anyways, I enjoyed the tutorial.
I taught myself how to use a stone. I have an interesting technique. When you are at the correct angle the blade sounds the quietest as you go over the stone. The blade is sharp when it no longer makes any (or almost any) noise as you run it over the stone. I use an oil stone and I believe a water or dry stone would sound louder. Keep that in mind.
I am a hunter and I love to collect different types of hunting knives. I found a knife online and ordered it. The knife met my expectations and I just fell in love with it. Incredible! Hey I really like your presentation on the sharpening the knife you did a great job I really didn't know you went in in that direction to do it I really didn't know but I just learned something thank you so much for sharing
this is a great video and thanks for sharing. My main question is once you establish the angle with the paper, how do you guarantee you keep that angle across the entire stroke? Especially with a drop point or even more complex geometry of different blades. If this angle is so important (which I understand it is), then the geometric tolerance is so tight, that there is no way to insure you can get it exact by hand. We're talking a 7 degree tolerance over a distance of and 1/8 of an inch or less. Parts that exact are manufactured for aircraft and such and cut on $1 million machines. It seems to be a "feel" thing, which is fine. But I don't understand why a specific angle is called for in this method when you can't measure your accuracy. I'm not talking about the video poster, I talking in general. A human hand is not that steady. The method I see here is take a piece of paper to get a starting angle and then just guess. Then do it to other side of the blade. I get it, my post will probably get a lot of negative comments. But the point and question I have is, how is this accurate at all?
You bring up some valid points, and I believe that for sake of a short video, he did not cover. I have to disagree with your assertion that humans are inferior to $1M machines when it comes to precision and feel. The human fingertip can distinguish 13 nanometer waves on a “flat” surface (reference Swedish study from 2013). Not cm or mm, but nano scale waves. So we have the receptors in all of us to be insanely precise. The question then becomes, how do we use this precision? Practice. Lots and lots of practice. You can absolutely hold a dead on angle through your entire sharpening stroke if you build the muscle memory. The learning curve is steep (meaning the first few attempts will be rough), but after a few hours of practice you will be as good as a machine. After 100 hours you will beat just about any machine made. Hope this helps. If you are a Star Wars fan: “Do, or do not... there is no try.”

I checked to see if my knife was sharp and ran my thumb across the edge without pressure, then a few minutes later it started stinging and looked at my thumb that it was actually bleeding.
Let it rest on a finger nail. If it sticks with ease, it's sharp enough. Less risk of cutting yourself than doing that or trying to shave with it. More accurate too because you can check each spot of the edge.
Look at the edge of the blade and see which side is rounded and which side is flat. the edge I am talking about takes the shape of an upside V. I use Smith Diamond stone kit, because some of the things in it is a jig which if careful you can hold a fixed position on the edge. My Dad was very good at sharpening knives, but I gotta tell ya I am horrible. I loaned a guy my # 110 Buck and he exclaimed, this thing is almost dull. I confessed I never knew what to do when I sharpen any instrument. The Smith Kit helped me to some extent. Take care Sunny!

So I gotta say, this is the best beginner tutorial on youtube.
Idk what im doing wrong, i found the angle, made even passes on both sides really slow and nothing is happening?? Help?
andrewandthebee123 it could be that the steel that makes your blade is tougher than the stone. Try getting a coarser stone
andrewandthebee123 im guessing rougher stone like this guy in video said depending on material you may need tougher stone.
Is it maybe a ceramic blade? I have one and even a diamond plate wont do it. Could be very tough steel also. Some are very wear resistant, which usually means they dont sharpen easily.

Don’t worry, this is a common mistake, you only put question marks after questions, not after statements.

I checked to see if my knife was sharp and ran my thumb across the edge without pressure, then a few minutes later it started stinging and looked at my thumb that it was actually bleeding.

Hey... hey.... excuse me... sir? Just FYI, knives cut skin.
Let it rest on a finger nail. If it sticks with ease, it's sharp enough. Less risk of cutting yourself than doing that or trying to shave with it. More accurate too because you can check each spot of the edge.
@@ummimconfused how you do that?
Thats... you accidentally cut yourself on purpose.... I'm impressed.
Thank you for a clear and simple tutorial! Loved the paper trick!
all I know is I have a dull pocket knife

I’ve watched allot of knife sharpening videos, this is super helpful! Thanks man🤙 also your comment about cutting paper was awesome 😁💚
I found out the most best way to sharpen a knife ..." WAIT FOR IT " GET SOMEONE ELSE TO DO IT !!!
What if you're out in the wild, and there is no one else around?
Sunny77ist Maybe if you're rich or lazy. If you'd rather waste money on someone to do something you could easily do in 10 minutes thats sad.
I tried to sharpen mine but for some reason I just cant get it right .the blade is still dull .
Take care Sunny!
...hehe.... 10 minutes.....
LOLOLOL... ...NO.
Quick and easy and to the point. Definetly gonna take those tips
I'm so poor I can't even pay attention ...
UUHHHHHHHHHHH!!! LOL!!!!
Thank you for the straightforward and informative video, exactly the kind of content that deserves appreciation!
how sharpen machete
A kid your age should not have one, much less try and sharpen it. I'm going to assume its your fathers or brothers machete and say you should probably ask before even looking at it
SwiftNight Why? I don't see anything wrong with giving a kid a knife or machete as long as they respect it and safely use it.
themaster 123 pretty much the same way, just more time
SwiftNight a person ur age as dumb as u r shouldn't ever be allowed to speak in public to muck up adult matters. But I wasn't gonna say anything till u thought u were allowed to speak when people are speaking on adult topics

Best sharpening tutorial. Thank you.
24 sec intro
... tone it down just a litttttttle bit
I agree. I watch videos to save time, not to spend my life watching someone's ability to waste my time. And to the person telling people to use the controls to skip it: Fuck off..
Thanks bud, I didn't know about 25 degree angle, learned something new today

borderlands fanatic1334 nothing weird about that. My first knife was a Boy Scout knife made by buck. Cut finger once.
How do u sharpen an axe and a machete. This was a great video for a beginner. I’d like you to explain it compared to the other guys. Very straight forward
"It's actualy pretty hard to do if you're paying attention"
