I did ACCA then enrolled for CA classes, I finished my ITC this year. Kinda the same thing it's a matter of employer's preference.

Why did you decide to do CA after?

@@NtwanieNgomane I wanted to work for PwC and they didn't want ACCA so I had to do CTA. But after qualifying I think both CA and ACCA are at par.

Hi Tafara, I’m currently studying ACCA and I would like to know how you transitioned from ACCA to CA and which institution did you transition with.

For thse who have done the full ACCA, which in the UK is the equivalent and dare l say more prestigious ACA qualification which is offered by the ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales). This is arguably the oldest accounting body in the World ooutside ICAS (Scotland) if l am not mistaken.
One could even argue it is the mother body for the various CA bodies e.g. ICAA (Australia) NZICA (New Zealand), ICAZ and SAICA.
So if the UK and other jurisdictions recognise ACCA as equivalent it begs the question why is that not the case in SA? Well to me its basically turf wars. SAICA is protecting wha it feels is its ground. How that stuation presists l am not sure but a certain progessor and his colleagues did write a paper about the stranglehold of the CAs on the profession right through to education through accrediting unis, paying stipends to lecturiers and even deciding what is taught,.... talk about influence as SAICA likes to say.
Anyway one way which some ACCA guys get around thisl imiation is to do the ACA from the ICAEW/ If you have competed all the ACCA exams and have chosen tax for instance in the advanced papers, you may only need to do:
Corporate Reporting (Advanced Audit & Assurance + Advanced Tax)
Strategic Business Maangement (Finance, IT, HR, Strategy, Risk etc)
Then the Capstone paper which is basically an overall paper where you are supposed to show your skills.
If you did not do tax. You will need to do the Business Plannting Taxation paper. However recently they have added Insurance and Banking as alternatives to Tax.
When you have done these and you have the necessary experience l believe 2 years, you become an ACA holder. Hence you have the global reach of ACCA but also the prestige of the ACA.
What it means is where there is a CA body you do not normally do conversion exams due to mutual recognition. So for instance you can go to Australia or SA no problem.
l think this is a uch bettr and easier way to get SAICA memebership than to go throught the Hon and ITC, APC routes but each to his own.
The good thing about the UK bodies e.g. the ACCA, they normally have 4 sittings a year
    March June September Decemer.
So if you can do about 4 subjects each sitting and pass... it is conceivable by the end of the year you could have finished all exams!
The ACA is slightly different there are four sittings for all levels except the Advanced stage where you write the CR, SBM or Capstone papers.
These are only wrtten twice a year either in July or November.
l hope someone finds this useful. l am not sure if the ACA is available in SA because it is a friend to the SAICA so would not want to step on its toes.
However one can take the exams in Boswana, Zambia and even Zimbabwe. In Botswana where someone with the ACCA, CIMA ad now the ACA is given membership as a CA Botswana.
So besides SA and Zimbabwe which are strongly influenced by the CA odies the other SADC states are more prepared to consider other bodies which makes the profession more accessible for most people and which encourages more people Not everyone has the ability or the stamina to do articles either in Topp or Tipp.
So this arrangement of more bodies is good.
F Furthermore in other countries if you have CA, ACCA or etc you can still do articles. Although in some countries you cannot sign off but art least you can be part of the teams

The "mother" Institute of all Chartered Accounting bodies is the one in Scotland (ICAS) which is also the oldest accounting professional body in the whole world. In the United Kingdom they are the only body that can award you the designation CA. As you rightly point out those from the relatively newer and now relatively bigger institute in England and Wales (i.e. ICAEW) are not CAs but ACAs, a significant distinction because ICAS has first dibs on that title.

@@khaltsharivist365 Thanks for the information. Interesting about the ACA and CA thing, l had no idea it was because ICAS was the first one. l was aware it was the oldest. Anyway one of those things.

Learned a lot. Also, your guest forgot to mention that ACCA has partnered with Oxford university where you can enrol for Bsc Honours in Accounting in exchange for forfeit some papers if you were exempted. Some people say it's not worth it but again its a personal choice.

Hey Ntwanie, there is a growing hype happening in the CA(SA) profession with the likes of Makosi and SAPRO taking the profession by storm for both newly qualified CA(SA) and experienced CA(SA), by giving them an opportunity to work remotely on international clients. Please consider doing a video on that, the benefits and probably the remuneration package if you are aware of it. Thank you very much.

    • @NtwanieNgomane

Acca doesn't have articles, you only need relevant experience, which you can get anywhere..as long as it's in finance/accounting.

      @@NtwanieNgomane
Hi l think what you said is both true and incorrect at the same time.
You are correct in saying you may attain experience in any relevant setting as long as there is a 'qualified' person to do the sign off.
In the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Botswana, Zambia. Zimbabwe, Singapore, and other places, firms take students on the articles route. With these firms they may have students on the CA route as well as those on the ACCA route. So that is why l think it is incorrect to say there is no articles. Articles are optional not mandatory with the ACCA. Please feel free to correct me if l am wrong.
Take for instance the current MD, Sitho Mdlalose, of Vodacom, he did a degree, then did the ACCA.
He did his articles at Deloitte before moving to the UK where he joined EY as a manager and then from there he joined Vodafone, where he has risen through the ranks and served in different roles and on different continents.
That means it could be in industry, in tax, in audit or other setting provided that you have someone there preferably ACCA who can do the signoffs for you.
There is something called PER - Practical Experience Requirements.
These are the skills and abilities or professional behaviour you need to achieve to attain full membership.
If you pass all the exams you are not a full member, you are called an Affiliate until you achieve all the Experience related requirements which are acquired through work and the successful completion of an ethics module which is online. So you would go to an organisation, work there and every 6 months your work is assessed to see whether you are meeting the objectives required to meet membership. So eventually, all being well the student will attain this. So it is dependent on successful examination progress as well as competence in work settings.
Therefore as students may go off into different workplaces like industry, the public sector, financial services etc the PER vary depending on setting for instance you may not need to achieve all the various audit related ones except preparation of audit schedules for the auditors if you are not in auditing.
The point is they recognise that not all students will not be with the firms so it is not mandatory to have Audit/Tax experience.
However you need to serve a period of supervised work experience - 3 years. before you can affix those letters after your name just as with other professions.
So as an affiliate you cannot put ACCA after your name, you can be removed from the register for doing so as you may be masquerading as a full ACCA when you are in fact not.
