So sad that house was abandoned and not sold, then vandalized. Too bad someone could not rescue some of the old wood and light fixtures to save some of the special features.
Once a house is left and the heat turned off, it soon becomes a structural wreck. Fault the vandals - yes - but the real destroyers are the owners who just didn't care enough or leave a will to sell the place to someone who would call it home. Also, when you build a very large home, its market potential becomes very small. Very few prospective buyers want, need, or are willing to pay taxes on a structure that is outsized for them. My guess is that a place like this has long ago been foreclosed on by taxing agencies. After a few years, nobody can afford to pay the back taxes plus refurbish it. Even as a vacant lot, it still has the back taxes plus costs to demolish the structure. The elevator looks like it was fit in later, blocking that doorway that wasn't needed. Elevators are very difficult to fit in after the house is built without it in the plans. The "diesel" odor was probably leftover heating oil. Most large houses have back staircases for staff and fire exit safety. From the grates, I expect those small fireplaces were probably intended to burn hard coal to warm the room without using the central heat all night. Overall, the structure has the character that it was built for space, not so much extreme luxury.
This place was sold to foreign investors in 2008. They’re the ones that are leaving it to rot. Foreign investors have bought up much of BC’s historic properties, coal towns, etc and are leaving them to rot or letting them sit empty.

Lots of interesting info about this property and J. Lee Thompson available on the Internet. The house was purchased by off-shore owners that have never been to the property and are in arrears of more than $4 million in fines by (city in which it's located) and more than $8 million in unpaid property taxes. Price was recently reduced to $9.5 million Cdn if anyone has that bargain price money kicking around. Nice find Dustin.🤙
Beautiful place. Shame people have to vandalize. Definitely would have been a stellar place to live even now. I do want to add though I dont just blame vandals. I also blame the families/estates who are greedy and dont want to sell without making a huge profit. Otherwise I'm sure others less fortunate would have purchased in the houses prime.
You’re probably one of the few watching this that actually realizes that! People have left this place to rot with no interest in preserving it at all. As for the so called vandals, those are silly young kids being dumb (we’ve all done silly shit as kids) and the real damage is from thieves. They stole all the valuable metals from in the walls.

Over $14 million for a house that need to be demolished plus land with delaminated fencing, trash and over grown land...need to really come down on price.
You know nothing about value. Its 30 acres of oceanfront property, probably worth more if there were no buildings. Your assertion they have to lower the price is just dumb.
I hope this place either gets fixed up or torn down or protected or moved to a more safe location so it can rest in peace and have no one vandalizing this place it’s history and history should be preserved and protected not destroyed like that someone should buy it to live in or turn it into something so people don’t have the need to destroy it more

It's a shame that people destroy other peoples things. You need to go back to what you used to say that the end of your video's. "Take nothing but photos and leave nothing but foot steps."
We need to bring back an eye for a eye punishment it won't stop it but it sure will slow it down if they know getting caught will have the same thing happen to their property!
Hey Bro I forgot to mention when you were in Nelson . There is a B&B between Nelson and the Ferry before Ainsworth . It is between Mansion & Castle . Amazing Place to stay . Great History to a Builder Family of Mining in B.C.
There's a house in between there too that's built out of embalming fluid bottles. Guy built it for him n his wife to retire in on Kootenay lake in the 40s I think. Looks like a little castle. The family still gives tours.
I found a listing at a little over 9 million dollars. It would be a nice project. Asbestos is not a big problem aslong as it is handeled with care and sealed up. It can be there for years with no issues. As long as it was not South African asbestos it can be dwelt with care. Some one should sell off the frontage as lots and use the cash to sustain or restore the historic place. I would love an acre ot two on that warm coast rather than the colder eastern one!
10:13 given the age of original construction, that smaller room was likely a nursery. Clearly the elevator was added later and blocked most of the doorway, but if you werent having kids anymore, it likely would have ended up being an office or crafts room.
The asking price is way too high. You can get larger properties for under 2 million and the house will cost a million to repair and the property is all overgrown. Unless it is close to a city then it might be worth 5 million but 14.5 ... no.
I wonder if it smelled like diesel downstairs because they used coal oil? Also, those small fireplaces may have burned coal. Also, I think that maybe the elevator was put in after Mr. Thompson got sick? Great vid... Kelley from Lake Tahoe, NV
This is an amazing mansion....the fireplaces where for burning coal. I have been there myself yrs ago. Would really love to see someone purchase is history in my town. Deerlepe is special to my heart and I hate how ppl have destroyed her love story and beautiful property.
How long are you going to hang out on the Island? And are you planning on taking the Sunshine Coast route back? The two ferries over there are still free going southbound as far as I know...
I've been here. but when i went, there was security cameras on the inside, so you couldn't go in,. and it was still in rather oki-ish condition. this was back in 2011 or so. the house was yellow [ not sure of paint or age] on the outside. and there wasn't too much as far as vandalism goes on the outside of it. i don't remember seeing any broken windows and it wasn't as over grown. one of the rooms yuou could see from the outside had news paper on the walls for wall paper and the floor tiles were in good condition, [needed a clean] but no cracks in it. sad to see it go into disrepair like this.
Those are definitely fire places. Those large, old homes would have fireplaces in the bedrooms, which were mainly their only source of heat in each room.
This is in my hometown, I always loved exploring there, it never used to be so trashed like that,it’s amazing besides the new generation of youth being a$$holes and vandalizing it! I envision this being turned into a recovery centre one day.
Vandals- they are jealous of others possessions and need to destroy because they have either always been handed things or never had anything because they have not worked for it and cant understand why they have nothing. It comes down to respect - for others and ones self
Well, if the builder and crew got paid at least that did some good. It’s a shame to see houses go to waste like this but folks who tear them down and rebuild them get work.
Never understood what is so much fun to destroy things. Just shows how humans are. Once older some bad things are suppressed but they can break out anytime. Of course we are not all like this. Good to see that one can approach things like these with so much respect. And these places deserve that. Only idiots don’t see it.
In 2008 the property was sold to an unknown "offshore buyer" and has been left vacant and uncared for since then. This is what happens to amazing property when you allow money laundering with real estate. I live in Vancouver, and there are literally thousands of properties here bought by Asian millionaires and left vacant, money laundering and tax evasion at it's finest. This should not be allowed, homes like Deerlepe should be loved and lived in. Houses are made to be lived in, and they die very quickly when left vacant. It's only a matter of time before this home is set ablaze no doubt, and I sincerely hope that someone manages to buy it and restore it to it's former glory before that happens.
When people are caught destroying any property I say the same thing should be done to their own property x10!!! And get put on a registry! Marking then for life like a felon! I personally have had a home I had for sale destroyed to the point that's it lost all it's value because the cost of the repair is beyond the value of the house I can't give it away now :( this is sad that some people have no respect for anything!
A Rumford fireplace, sometimes known as a Rumford stove, is a tall, shallow fireplace designed by Sir Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford, an Anglo-American physicist best known for his investigations of heat.
It's for the 30 acres of land not the house itself. Land prices in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island in BC are extremely high and have been for years.
@@glenng.8254 I don't know what interest China would have in the area this property is located in but yes the Speculation, Vacancy, and Empty Home Taxes recently introduced in BC in the Lower Mainland/Vancouver Island regions have made an effort to deter overseas buyers who do not have an interest in actively residing in the properties they purchase.
That place is super cool it was actually pretty well much in completely intact up until about one year ago maybe a year and a half alot of people didn't know about it or people that did never knew of it's location until word got out and it got trashed and yes those are all little fire places for the different rooms it's super sweet in there alot of really freaky stuff goes on in there too but one of the coolest things are there are secret hall walls between the walls up stairs I know it's a shame it was smashed up but on the island they would have to smash all the inside walls out anyways to get it back up to code A lot of the asbestos in there

I'm thinking that elevator was installed after the house was built. Probably because one of the owners couldn't get up the stairs anymore. Sorry I can't tell you why people destroy places like that (or anything), my mind functions properly!
aww was waiting for ocean view dam 14.5 must be big land and nice view , looks like someone tore walls up for copper pipe and wire , wonder if they found any hidden gold or money in those walls
I had an argument w/ someone who said graffiti was fine because it was art, while I argued that it was vandalism; artful vandalism but still vandalism. The other dude would not budge. So to make my point I asked for his address so I could put some art on the front of his home. He had nothing more to say. I don't care if its Jackson Pollock splattering paint, if its done to public or private property w/out permission, its vandalism. Period.
The elevator looks fairly modern and is not the same vintage as the home. Modern electronics and cheap paneling give it away. I suspect that either the husband, before he died or his wife sometime afterwards became infirm enough to need it. That’s why it’s placed in such an odd position. They wanted it as close to the master bedroom as possible.
From the height of the fences, I'm guessing the fenced in area might have been tennis courts at one time? In the times the house was built the courts would have been hard packed clay or rock dust (both will get destroyed by nature and disappear if not maintained). At 7:54 it's a coal burning fireplace, very common in the UK and Europe. (friendly suggestion: please slow down your camera/light movements inside dark environments, it's a bit disorienting)
Is there a chance you missed a floor? Seems there are windows in the roof space and below them, as well as the ground floor...? Great video, just awful to see that horrid vandalism.
@@Destination_Adventure Its sad people can't party and be respectful. I've never understood tagging etc. Way better ways to leave a more lasting mark on the world.
We need a law to appropriate abandoned properties and make them into park preserves to protect and better utilize them. We have such a tiny west coast and so much is private property it's a shame. Especially for it to be left to vandals or sit empty until someone buys it.

Grey bridge paint would cover that grafiti really easy
Those are definitely fire places. Those large, old homes would have fireplaces in the bedrooms, which were mainly their only source of heat in each room.
Aww she was a beauty once upon a time. Sad
Hope you update and calculate the time spent empty and what they could've offered
Yup tiny fireplace and that would be a diesel furnace or boiler in the basement.
What was this place called? I tried to look it up, but can't find any info on it, it sound like he said Dulapey. Anyone have a link to some info?
This is in my hometown, I always loved exploring there, it never used to be so trashed like that,it’s amazing besides the new generation of youth being a$$holes and vandalizing it! I envision this being turned into a recovery centre one day.
That diesel smell could have been from an old fuel oil furnace in the basement. My dad had one we used for many years.
Excellent
Production value of your videos is fantastic. One suggestion. In dark areas...more lighting...slower pans
Vandals- they are jealous of others possessions and need to destroy because they have either always been handed things or never had anything because they have not worked for it and cant understand why they have nothing. It comes down to respect - for others and ones self
It’s a shame that ppl destroy so much beauty
Diesel fired furnace still a few in my area working great job I never understood why people would destroy shit still is a beautiful home
Could also of been kerosene or fuel oil based on the age of the place.
Looks like someone was thinking that there must be money in the walls.
Did you check out 1424 Gilspie rd? Grouse Nest was another old mansion 10 minutes away. It is in better shape however if the walls could talk....

@@Destination_Adventure when was the house boarded up ?
Love your videos 👌
I agree with you would have loved to see back in the day . Karma always goes in a full circle 👍
These people need to stop asking these outrageous prices.
It's for the 30 acres of land not the house itself. Land prices in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island in BC are extremely high and have been for years.
@@therebex23 yeah no thanks to China!
That place is super cool it was actually pretty well much in completely intact up until about one year ago maybe a year and a half alot of people didn't know about it or people that did never knew of it's location until word got out and it got trashed and yes those are all little fire places for the different rooms it's super sweet in there alot of really freaky stuff goes on in there too but one of the coolest things are there are secret hall walls between the walls up stairs I know it's a shame it was smashed up but on the island they would have to smash all the inside walls out anyways to get it back up to code A lot of the asbestos in there
Sadly, like most houses like this, it will just sit till it is un salvageable and woth nothing but the land and be destroyed for a new house
Where is this home?
Follow your channel and love your stories and adventures. This video I found hard to watch as you only had your headlamp for lighting. Hard to make out what was being shown. More light would have been much appreciated. Keep up the exploration !
I bet the original owners photo alblem would be cool to see
Relaxing Nature I tried so hard to find original photos. Very little luck.
@@Destination_Adventure the photos would probaly be in old peoples storage boxes ..not online ..you would haveto track down the people and theyre friends ..
That was a oil furnace that would explain the diesel smell.
No insulation in the wall?
We had a house built in 1905, when we gutted it there was about a foot of vermiculite at bottom of walls.
John Lee Thompson was an Englishman who clearly wanted old looking fire places installed.
The diesel smell would maybe be the old oil burning furnace? Still homes burning that stuff today.
(friendly suggestion: please slow down your camera/light movements inside dark environments, it's a bit disorienting)
the vandals are not people , they are 2 legged animals.
Is there a chance you missed a floor? Seems there are windows in the roof space and below them, as well as the ground floor...? Great video, just awful to see that horrid vandalism.
Yes you are correct. There is one more floor up top that I didn’t discover until later. Just more destruction, so I didn’t include it. Good eye.
