Your clear, cogent and compelling (three x C) videos are the things that put your tutorials head and shoulders above most other tutorials found on TH-cam. Today's tutorial was an especially useful tutorial for me because I do struggle with Motion titles (I usually cock them up!). Your previous Motion/FCP tutorials have been a tremendous help as I try learn more about Motion and FCP. A BIG thank you Sir. Scotland applauds you and is with you all the way!
Great, simple, clear, concise explanation as always Dylan. Love your videos. I have a great suggestion for you maybe if you haven’t already you could do a video demonstrating how to create custom overlays because people have asked me in the past how I do it, but I thought you would have a great way of demonstrating how to create them an export PNG‘s into the correct file using Final Cut Pro, only for those that would like to make their own, but do not have Photoshop
I have been looking for this information for awhile now. I just couldn't figure out the difference between Generator and Project - it completely eluded me. I tried looking it up but it just wasn't exactly that clear to me. Now I know! Also knowing that much of it is a preference thing is also very helpful. It all seems like a no brainer - but thank you for catering to the clueless like me!!
There are a couple of clear reasons to use a generator instead of a title. A title template does not support the retiming function of a clone...so the easy reversal of animations via the clone makes the generator the only option if that is required. Other than the benefit of clone reversal, the main use case for the generator instead of a title.. is for when you want to export out a section to put into motion to add your graphics directly rather than to create various title and effect templates for the graphics to be added in FCP.. Publishing that project as a generator means all of the usual publishing for parameters and rigs is also available, so the editor can make changes in FCP without having to go back into Motion to repeat the export/import process...and from there, the generators are run in FCP like media and work as such in the FCP project so In terms of round tripping and a workflow between Motion and FCP, this is where the generator holds its own. I think it would be good if FCP had an export function like 'export as a Motion generator' , so that Motion would create it FCP would prompt Motion to be the active application on screen..or something like that. Then when that generator is ready to be published, it is added back into the project exactly where the exported section is..with that original section ,muted...or something like that.
I gotta admit, I always just defaulted to using generators or effects, assuming they were more versatile than titles. But the fact the title actually EFFECTS the underlying layer is very interesting and can be used in many ways outside of just text. Very weird but useful design choice.
I use Apple motion to make animations and I would like to include text in my animations. Are the fonts that come with the Apple motion program ok for commercial use?
All fonts that come with your Mac should be fine for commercial use! But if you downloaded any fonts off the internet, you will need to check and make sure those are individually.
Hey Dylan , Any way you could do a scrolling video project some day, maybe something with a white back ground and have the video scrolling to the right like a carousel post but with videos? That would be amazing, I cannot find any videos at all showing how to do that. Also with masking people out of white backgrounds. Like a "collage" scrolling video clip with different people in different positions on a white background in it if that makes sense!!! Thanks, I know you are the guy to ask how to do this...
I miss round tripping in the original, better, Final Cut. Back before they skipped versions eight and nine and changed everything for X (ten), or, as I still like to call it, iMovie Pro.

Thank you for sharing this clarification with us, it is subtle but nevertheless important to help us make better choices for our compositions.

Appreciate the extra insight!

Really informative video.
TY Dylan!
That was new and interesting. Thanks for sharing

So the title in FCP is actually the adjustment layer in AE

Hey Dylan. Trying to renew my Patreon membership with you but not working for some reason. Please can you send me a link.
