Great job on the box, one thing I would recommend to you and others is when installing the weather stripping @ 9:48, you should place it on the lid, not the top of the box. This will help with accidentally damaging it when you go to put or take things out. I know this is a bit late but others who watch this for their own can benefit. Good job!

Buddy let me tell you, that to me was an amazing build! A Big box store buy can not replace having done something on your own! Yes, it may have flaws as with anything but, you know YOU made it and makes you appreciate it that much more. Great job!!!

Thanks! Yes the bending of aluminum is tricky. I can’t remember if this was 3031 or 6061 but one is the bendable type of aluminum and the other will break if bent too far. If you try this just make sure the diamond plate is the formable kind😀👍

Great job Joe, looks like a very sturdy box. If you will be putting batteries in there and charging while the box is closed, might want think about venting since the gases need somewhere to go. Keep up the great work.
DIY by Dino yes for sure! Definitely a little learning curve but I figure it’s just a difference of where the effort is. Aluminum is harder to weld but easier to cut and won’t rust...whereas steel is harder to cut but easier to weld...but will require paint or something to protect from elements😀

I weld aluminum everyday mostly tig. With a spool gun use a push angle to keep the gas in front of the weld pool. You will get better welds and no black with the weld. Awesome job for your first time and love the channel.

I know you made this video quite some time ago, and not sure if anyone else has given this recommendation. It appears your bolts go from the inside and the nuts are under the frame. For security's sake, I recommend installing the bolts from the outside and securing them with the nuts on the inside. This way no one can simply take off the nuts and make off with your toolbox. Additionally, the toolbox looks fantastic, and I think there is a lot to be said about self-satisfaction having created it yourself. Great job.

What an excellent tutorial, thoroughly detailed, great videography, presentation and narration. The result is a custom size battery box with great torsional rigidity and which looks beautifully made, which it was. I was surprised that the lock assembly didn't appear to have a gasket between it and the aluminium it fitted to.
Awesome job brother. No matter the cost of the project you can’t put a price on learning and/or sharpening skills. I always feel it’s better to build it than buy it regardless of price. Skills carryover to every day life and you can also save your department money if you are willing to put in the work for “free”! Which in turn saves taxpayers money.

Daniel Fisch thanks Daniel! I actually considered brazing those tight corners...but figured I just needed to power through on them with the welder. But I’ve seen lots of stuff with brazed aluminum and it ends up being plenty strong for most all uses
Flip the skill saw blade around so it spins backwards for cutting metal. Works way better. Also, you just need an old blade you can keep around when you do it that way. Awwesome build by the way!
great video and build. Nice work on the box. One suggestion, i you are going to put batteries inn it you should put vent hole in or the gases to escape when charging or a heavy drain on them.
Ive got a spool gun on my lincoln electric, Ive never been able to make anything pretty but it gets the job done. Cleaning with acetone and preheating before first weld helps a bit but a grinder can make anything look better. Nice work on the tool box. It came out great!

Great job Joe! Might want to insert an insulator strip between the steel frame and box. Any moisture that gets between the two metals will eventually cause a problem for you. A strip of rubber from a mud flap or even 1/2” thick wood would do.

Very nice job I thought you. Got pretty professional results on the welds and the design The folds came out nice building a custom sized. Tool box. Imo will always look better than using a manufactured one that is close to what you want and usually not as. Well made as a one off unit I was never trained in welding and metal work but i did work in a shop that. Specialized Architectual Woodworking and metal fabrication. And the people that worked there always impressed me on there welding and cleanliness of their welding especially with Aluminum

Great job! It looks good and strong. One item you might think about: replace the slotted screws on the locking mechanism with no-slot screws. As it stands right now, someone could remove the lock with a screw driver. Just a thought. Once again, great job.

Nice looking Box. For the stabilizers give a little thought to using scissor jacks from a junk yard. Most will have a box you can pick through to get four the same size and type. I used them on my tent trailer after the friction type wore out.

Box looks great Joe! I used rivets to put my box together that i built for my 12v batteries and it turned out nice but i'm thinking about going to 6v batteries and am going to need a bigger battery box. Awesome idea to score your bends. Thanks for the ideas!

Nice Job, I'll go to school on you and use some of your techniques! The plan is to make a Cargo Carrier that mounts on the back of a travel trailer to carry camping stuff, to include a 45 LB Electric Bike. etc. I realize it critical to be mindful of the amount of weight at the rear of a Trailer, and therefore will limit the amount of weight to no more than 150 LBS, including the Carrier! Any weight that is added to the back of a RV Trailer, can easily adversely affect handling if not limited! The "Base Frame" of the Carrier will use Tractor Supply's Alum Model, and then Aluminum sides/back/bottom/top will be made per your techniques. Hopefully, I'll be able to incorporate a removal Back Panel, that slides up/down into position. This will eliminate the need to lift the contents over the "Top Edge of the Box," thereby saving my back! Thanks for your ideas!
Nice build!! Here’s a tip for your outside corner welding: turn your wire speed way down, you’re using the corners to fuse it together so you don’t need as much filler. Also, position the joint so that the corner is over the edge of your table so you can get to the bottom of the joint easily

For the stabilizers give a little thought to using scissor jacks from a junk yard. Most will have a box you can pick through to get four the same size and type.
I used them on my tent trailer after the friction type wore out.

Box looks great Joe! I used rivets to put my box together that i built for my 12v batteries and it turned out nice but i'm thinking about going to 6v batteries and am going to need a bigger battery box. Awesome idea to score your bends. Thanks for the ideas!
Brian Rogers thanks Brian! I think rivets are a great time tested technique...and yes the 6vs sound like they do a bit better job for the long term...I guess that’s the whole reason the golf carts use em🤔

The plan is to make a Cargo Carrier that mounts on the back of a travel trailer to carry camping stuff, to include a 45 LB Electric Bike. etc.
I realize it critical to be mindful of the amount of weight at the rear of a Trailer, and therefore will limit the amount of weight to no more than 150 LBS, including the Carrier! Any weight that is added to the back of a RV Trailer, can easily adversely affect handling if not limited!
The "Base Frame" of the Carrier will use Tractor Supply's Alum Model, and then Aluminum sides/back/bottom/top will be made per your techniques. Hopefully, I'll be able to incorporate a removal Back Panel, that slides up/down into position. This will eliminate the need to lift the contents over the "Top Edge of the Box," thereby saving my back!

Nice build!! Here’s a tip for your outside corner welding: turn your wire speed way down, you’re using the corners to fuse it together so you don’t need as much filler. Also, position the joint so that the corner is over the edge of your table so you can get to the bottom of the joint easily
