BMW E92 M3 - Bare Metal Underside Restoration

  • ‪@RedishMotorsportbmw‬ show the process of a 2011 BMW E92 M3 having our Bare Metal Underside Restoration. This E92 M3 had 40,000 miles and was bought brand new by this owner.
    He'd notice corrosion starting to form on certain parts of the Underside of the Chassis and was concerned.
    Seeing as he'd bought this car brand new he knew every inch of the M3 and how it had been treated and stored and driven.
    So even with his excellently particular treatment of the E92 M3, it was still suffering from Underside Rust growing (which they all seems to have in varying degrees).
    After a quick Google search, he found us at ‪@RedishMotorsportbmw‬ and started watching our TH-cam Channel here which contained lots of informative and detailed videos on Underside Restorations and he was very impressed with our working standards (his words).
    So the car was booked in for the works to be carried out and over the course of around 2 weeks this video was filmed in sections.
    This shows how we first assess the vehicles when it arrives, then strip down, then degrease, then assess once more.
    Then we move on to the long task of rust removal, and also microscopic corrosion removal (which was everywhere!) which was forming under the factory-applied E-coat!
    We bare metalled a huge part of the underside of the care - a serious amount of work went into this - days in fact.
    Then a chemical treatment process of the bare metal could be carried out to naturalise the rust and also coat the bare metal in a zinc phosphate coating to help promote adhesion for the next layer of protection.
    Moving onto the paint protection stage we used our tried and tested process of Etch Primer, High Build Primer, Sprayable Seam Sealer, and Top Coat Colouring.
    Once this had fully cured overnight we could then inject the cavities accurately with a Cavity Wax to make sure the internal sections were protected too.
    It goes without saying that this car now has far better protection than when it left the factory, and therefore highly likely to not corrode again.
    We can cater for any size of Underside Restoration from 'Rear End' work much like this, right up to entire Front-to-Rear Underside Restorations like our video examples here:
    • BMW E46 M3 CSL - Under...
    We can work on any age of BMW and are starting to get brought classic BMW's as people are appreciating our attention to detail.
    Even if you have a nice F80 F82 F83 M3 and would like some basic protection to STOP rust happening then please get in touch with us on the links below and we'll be happy to help you.

    Great stuff but I suggest you don’t grind the metal down where it’s pitted, but use a spot sandblaster, use one with the brushes on the end and it stops the glass beads flying everywhere. Most of them have a bag to catch the recycled sand off. I’ve found this to be the best rest removal method on pitted areas.

    I wonder if you have tested the Por15 metal prep without any top coating to see how well it protects the metal when it's exposed to to the elements over time? I guess the product is the equivalent to Dinitrol RC900 which uses a rust converter and epoxy resin instead?

    • @MrHamrocks

      having used por15 before, if i remember correctly it will break down over time when exposed to UV. Which is why it needs top coated for best protection long term.

    Does your undercoating cure hard or is it rubberized? I've had issues with Raptor Liner cracking when it's applied over soft seam sealers because it cures hard. I've also had the same issue when primering over seam sealer like you guys did in this video.

    You had to put on this thich, black anti-gravel stuff on top of all your coatings, before vax. It is a must have for car underbody protection against rocks. It might doesn't look as good and clean, but why does it matter if it's under the car? Not everything thats old fashion is bad. Golf 2 was all coated with anti-gravel and some still have no rust underneath the car till this day! Other than that great job! Cheers and Keep up the good work!

      I have also seen plenty of VWs with that same coating look great, but it comes off in sheets and has had water sitting between the coating and the metal. Scrapped 3 because of exactly that issue!

    • @sigzum1963
      @sigzum1963 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Decrepit_biker What you have seen was someone doing cheap and wrong aftermarket anti-gravel coating on a dirty, unprepared surface, that's why it's falling off. You should never put this stuff over the rust or unprepared surface, otherwise it will make the metal rust even faster.

    • @Decrepit_biker
      @Decrepit_biker 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sigzum1963 no this was the factory coating. Mk4 golfs seemed to be particularly prone to the issue. The sills or floor would look fine, but the rot was happening behind it by the time you discovered the rot it was really bad, because the outer coating held its shape even when the metal was all but disintegrated. Didn't seem to aflict all cars for what ever reason.

    • @sigzum1963
      @sigzum1963 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Decrepit_biker hmm. that might be becouse it rusted from the otherside- the inside frame. If the car was driving in coutry where they put salt on the road, than those inside frames needs to be washed and inside sprayed with vax every season. if not than it will start rust from inside and the rust will be unstoppable if you skip this annual treatment. other than that it is impossible for water to penatrate throught anti gravel coating for decades.

    • @Decrepit_biker
      @Decrepit_biker 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sigzum1963 nope was the flat floor that killed my last golf. When I punctured the coating water poured out. A lot of water, and the metal was very rusty and thin. When I took the carpets out to look at welding, the paint on the inside of the floor was unbroken. Was definitely due to the coating spreading from the floor and creating a water trap, once it did water found its way in and that was it. At other times on other cars I could peal the coating off in sheets inches square, before the water got underneath and the metal was clean. Absolutely the coating unbonding from the metal. Worst thing was it hid the damage so well, that it could be really bad before it was noticable. Was very difficult to tell the coating was loose until it was really bad either.

    Frankly if the owner is that meticulous I'm surprised they didn't just sandblast + powdercoat the original rear subframe, rather than spending big $$$ on a new one. Powdercoating the original one would've been significantly cheaper and more durable

    • @TonyBrQ
      @TonyBrQ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The original one was badly corroded, and potentially compromised. Sandblasting the interior surfaces would have been sub-optimal. It would also have needed all bushes to be removed for powder-coating to be done successfully. BMW supplied a new subframe with new bushes, free of charge. No corrosion to fix, and interior/exterior ready for effective corrosion protection to be applied.

    The quality of the metal, and Ecoat is deplorable! For a car that is so highly strung, this kind of trouble in the preservation should be studied by the BMW people.
    To me this stems from moisture contaminated paint, and cheap recycled metal!!!
    Something that dose NOT BELONG in the BMW catalogue never mind the M Sport devision!
    This along with the shell bearing issue is more than enough to put future collectors of these machines!

      @@Chickendinner2024 I’ve had 80s and 90s BMW’s and mercedes. And this kind of corrosion was absent from all of them. This has to be due to the lack of quality control. As we know Mercedes suffered badly from corrosion in the mid 90s to the mid 2000nd’s and this was down to removal of funds from quality control. Thanks to the Then newly acquired American partnership. And clearly has happened here. As the narrator tells that BMW stopped putting anti corrosion paint on these vital areas! Hence this shocking level of corrosion for the age of the car.
