  • I've been inspired by J. Daniel Cramer after seeing him perform live on Dutch Modular Fest/Modulation 2022 in Utrecht. He did a polyphonic Krell with four A178 antennas by Doepfer, hosted by a 2x104 HP Tiptop Mantis case. I was already planning to get a second Arbhar so this was a great opportunity to bring all this stuff together. Mr. Cramer's channel is here: / jdanielcramer
    I've uploaded this video three times already since yesterday, but all versions had errors. Maybe 'providence' was telling me it wasn't good enough. Today I felt I needed to hook up the Doepfer A121S multi-mode filter too. In my 'big filter compare' I assumed it had some digital help (control), but it doesn't. It's 100% analog. It again reminds me to either do proper research or just shut the f*ck up.
    The vocal snippets in Lubadh are from Julia M, my Abbey Road Institute fellow alumni. She performs as Lucid Yin, always surrounded by talented musicians. She has a great angelic voice to harvest. / lucid_yin

    Daniel is incredible - I had the honor of leading a conversation with him on the ol’ Club Eurorack, when that was a thing pre-vaccine. So glad you got to see him! Inspiring for sure.

    Doepfer A-137-1 Wave Multiplier, Doepfer A-124 Wasp Filter, Doepfer A-111-4, Doepfer A-118-2 en Doepfer A-160-2 Clock Divider II zijn wel favoriet.

    The only Doepfer I have is a A 177-2 foot controller. Only 8 HP. Seems very solid, & consistent. Mostly, I've used it, attenurandomizers in Beads. It's like having a third hand. And probably there are so many other handy ways to employ this. Just the fact that a person can leave the dial, on a module, unmoved (at zero), of whatever feature, .. and manipulate that circuit with this controller, knowing you can return to default/zero, with some foot pressure, is a nice thing.
    This thing, has 2 features. The foot controller - a single 1/4" jack in, to 2 1/8" patch cable outs - 0 to 8 volts, for CV needs .. AND a foot switch - a single 1/4" jack in to 2 1/8" patch cable outs - 0 or 12 volts for .. well, I suppose for gates, for one thing. I've not used the switch part, of this, yet. A Moog expression pedal works very well, with this. It having an adjustable range, .. which I'm always fiddling with.
    Or, if playing an instrument .. well, you know ..
    $68 US, for A 177-2 .. it's a steal.

    Man! You should do long Ambient music sessions...... We lack good organic modular ambiance.

    Yes! I also have a Wiichuck for my modular! Thanks so much for putting this up, looks great, I’d love to use the footage if I could? Also it’s important to note that this patch doesn’t work like a theremin, I’m influencing the generative process. Check out my vids for a full description, cheers! ❤

      Thanks, Mr. J. Indeed, I am also using it to set things in motion and I learned a lot from your vids so far. For me this is just a start of a long new journey. I'll collect the raw footage I took at DMF and transfer them to you. I think I shot a pretty decent impression with the Krell patch (sounds great on phone audo), but the dance part had bad audio due to venue acoustics. Your exotic dancer artist is also featured on my shots. I'll transfer the files tomorrow (Saturday 17th).

    It's cool that you're exploring Doepfer! I don't know their modules either, but I can't wait to see what you find.
    BTW, speaking of taking on new manufacturers, is there a reason you haven't tried Joranalogue yet? It seems like you could have a lot of fun exploring the Orbit 3 or Generate 3, and digging into utilities like the Compare 2 might be fun.

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, the reason is simple. I started with a MakeNoise Shared System and got every Mutable Instruments module I could get my hands on (often doubles, like tides, plaits and marbles). I love Joranalogue, but I only buy modules that add something to what I already have. Since it's WAY TOO MUCH, I only got their XLR line input module so far.

      Doepfer is the jam. Their new slim line utilities are amazing and crazy affordable. The philosophy behind the company is great too. All surface mount parts so that all their modules are repairable and modable. Their thru zero VCO is very cool and very slept on.

    Did you ever figure out your lubadh noise issues? Having noise in both cases I have tested. Even without it being patched i have whine noise. Tested on headphone modules as well, so it's not my mixer or any unbalanced cable issues. Lot of people on modwiggler with the same issue, just no real solution

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've just downloaded the new firmware so I am planning to do a new run on Lubadh. But to be honest, I never noticed any noise on the module itself. I will connect it directly to the audio interface with no output module. That will show what's really going on... I have many other noise issues, though but I am on ungrounded mains and when I record close to the PC I also get a USB ground loop. I fixed it with a pro output module (WMD) and balanced cables.

    Doefer where the first at Eurorack I think and way things going maybe the last as so many company’s Folding, Hexinverter now as well as Mutable, WMD so a diminishing Market, the cost of this synthesis just to much for a younger generation who are burdened by Cost of Living, not much disposable income and can use DAW or One small Synth to get Similar results, not being Negative just Realistic, sign of times alas, I love Electronic Music but a Majority of people are not interested in same , recycled formats that hasn’t progressed for decades in my view, only DJs,Established acts that possibly will survive this stagnating times, only my opinion, hope I’m wrong

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am pretty sure the Eurorack market will change, will have challenges and problems, but new companies will rise that will get creative with what's available. MakeNoise XPO is a perfect example of reusing 'older' tech to make something revolutionary. I am sure they will ship between September and October, but I don't have a clue when the second batch will arrive. I hope my pre-order was fast enough :).

      The current slew of companies folding are largely to do with the unavailability of chips and other materials.
      Things always go in cycles. There is still plenty people into eurorack. The scene up here in Central Scotland is buzzin right now.
