    My father’s bombing missions were guarded by P-47’s until the P-51’s we’re introduced. Once this happened, the B-17’s were a whole lot safer. He said you could see the German pilot’s faces as they dodged between the bombers, trying to evade the Mustangs. Total panic! That scream from the gun ports was the last thing many of the enemy pilots heard. Awesome, totally awesome!!!

      I do not think so, two planes travelling at 300+ mph, the bomber crews could see their faces?

    • @ronlafitte6864
      @ronlafitte6864 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jacktattis the B-17's were not that fast, especially when bomb-laden. The enemy planes tried to hide between them, but to no avail. And yes, they often saw their faces. Others from the crew said so, also.

      I live less than a mile from the old airfield where the Merlin was first fitted to the Mustang.
      The runway is still there and so are Rolls-Royce.
      It's still used as a waypoint for the BBMF's Lancaster, Spitfires, Hurricane and Dakota when heading East during display season and they come over low. Amazingly low.
      Sadly, there's no flying into there now, houses are being built on the site.
      Incidentally, it's the same airfield where an escaped Luftwaffe POW tried to steal a plane and fly home - they made a film about it - The One That Got Away' starring Hardy Kruger.
      He didn't get away in real life.
      I haven't seen the film either.
      The last fly-in at the airfield saw a Mustang come in - I stood on the threshold of the temporary grass strip as it came in to land. The prop parted my hair - I could've counted the rivets on the fuselage! By far the closest I've been to an aircraft in flight.
      Goosebumps? Oh yes.

    Great job, thanks for posting! My uncle flew a P51 in WWII, so it's my favorite! I was working inside an industrial building one morning about 20 years ago near a small air port outside of Cleveland OH. The ground began to shake, but the sound was unmistakable to me. I ran outside to see (and feel) a P51 take off at just a couple of hundred feet over my head. Awesome V12 Merlin 1400+ HP power! It turns out the confederate air force was warming up for an air show the next day. The P-51 Mustang claimed the most Allied kills with no fewer than 281 pilots earning the "Aces" (5 kills) distinction in a Mustang. It was the greatest fighter of the war. Maybe next time you could give us a quick blast from the 50 cals. haha

    Was working in my garage one afternoon and I heard the engine of what I thought was a helicopter but I wasn't really too sure about it because I never heard that sound before. I didn't run out of the garage to look into the sky and see what it was as I kept working. A few moments later I heard the sound approaching again and I ran out and coming my way over head was a P-51 Mustang. The sound of it was Haunting it was pleasing to the ear unlike anything I had ever heard. Sent chills up my back. I waved at him several times and he waved his wings at me. He was heading toward the lakefront in Chicago for the air show. I'll never forget it. Always loved the P51.

    That is by far the best P-51 video around for seeing close up of Mustangs in flight.
    Being able to see all the boost tabs moving and the aircraft responding to control inputs is absolutely mesmerising for a Mustang fan like me.
    FYI the P-51D has a 'reverse rudder boost tab' that instead of helping the pilot move the control surface, it actually makes the rudder proportionally harder to move to stop over control.

    • @Juno58
      @Juno58 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im positive, I've been a Airframe & Powerplant mechanic for the last 27 years (or Licenced Aircraft Maintenance Engineer as we're called in Australia), and in my younger days I worked restoring warbirds and have read the P-51 maintenance manual.
      This was actually a modification done to the aircraft to prevent over controlling of the rudder at high speeds.
      There is actually a nice diagram of the mechanism if you search 'P-51 Mustang reverse rudder boost tab'

    Yeahhh...jet engines are thunderous.....and boy do they sound when you hear them...but they'll never ever give you the feeling like you get hearing these babies.....there's something....some underlying tone that is just far far better sounding here

      That's thanks to the *British* Rolls Royce Merlin engine. 😉

    Those planes and a trio of Corsairs would be even more perfect.

      Well, adding just one P-38 Lightning would really make it “perfect”, IMHO.

    I once worked at a golf course right next to the Canadian War plane Heritage Museum, home of a flying Lancaster bomber, Hurricane, Corsair, and Mustang, among others. Always loved that sound!

    The music from the Rolls Royce/Packard Merlins is its own special aria. No wonder Goering said the war was lost when he saw these beauties flying over Berlin!

    FlyingMachines TV - my friend a huge Thanx for this gem. This isn't simply a 'Mustang video', rather a true 'P-51 OVERDOSE' being compressed in less than three and half minutes.... impressive quality, and great skill in following those birds of prey.
    Greetings from Italy... Ciao. Frank.
