@@waynesimpson2074 Nope, it's the gun ports. If the sound were coming from the supercharger, it would be constant during full throttle, you can clearly hear it cutting out when turning one way.
The whistle does indeed come from the passage of air flowing over the gunport blast tubes of the first (inboard) guns in each wing of the D/K model at high angles of attack such as a turn, a dive, a climb, but not in straight and level flight, which it would do if it was the supercharger. The inboard blast tube has the gun muzzle actually recessed back inside it by about 6 inches. It is literally the same principle as blowing over the mouth of a bottle. If you need further proof then ask yourself why D/K models on the airshow circuits that have no guns fitted and have a clean leading edge do NOT whistle. I had the privilege of flying the D model "Crazy Horse" at Stallion 51 in 2012, it has no guns and does not whistle. If the supercharger theory was correct it must whistle, but it doesn’t. However its stablemate "Crazy Horse 2" has guns and does whistle. Then consider the Razorback B/C versions. Engine, supercharger and radiator air scoop are the same as the D/K. If they were the cause then the razorbacks would whistle in exactly the same manner. But they do not. The only difference (other than the obvious canopy, upper fuselage and minor wing changes) is that they have only 2 guns in the wings mounted in slightly different positions without the blast tubes. They do NOT whistle. It’s NOT the supercharger or the radiator scoop, it’s the inboard gun ports blast tubes.
My son and I watched a P51 and a Spitfire doing simulated strafing runs at Oshkosh one year, and I have to say that is still one of the biggest thrills of my life. The Spit sounded like a jet. So many of the war bird owners are (understandably) reluctant to open them up, so many never get to see and hear what the planes can do. That same year a chartered 747 from New Zealand was there and made low, slow, side-slipping passes over the runway. Absolutely awesome.
The p51 mustang is one of best aircraft ever made, an american design with a British rolls Royce merlin engine turned it into a killer ww2 fighter plane
So wonderful to see these WWII war horses still up and running and so eye appealing. Thank you for this. There is better engine sound then that of the merlin Rolls Royce V 12
Freakin excellent video. Love the sound of a Merlin and gun ports singing...it's enough to give ya a stiffie (heh heh). Too bad about the damned wind noise, however. Thanks for posting this!
It's unlikely gun barrels can emit such sound, they're too small and the speed too high. Those sounds accompany moderate Gs, they most probably come from the scoop.
@@no_fb Same aircraft here pulling those same moderate G's - With capped gun ports. No howling but still that great Merlin sound we all love ! th-cam.com/video/4bH8XQKV0CI/w-d-xo.html
Mal wieder super gefilmt! Ich mag den Sound des Merlin, auch wenn er etwas weniger sonor klingt als ein DB605. Weiss jemand, warum das Spornrad mitten im Flug herauskam?
hi😀 thanks for this video! I am searching hard for the sound of Mustang! The reason I need that sound is because I'm making audio content for the blind. May I use that sound for about 2-3 seconds if you allow it?
That's a common misconception. Maybe in ww2 If you German soldiers trying to protect there airfield from being strafed by p51 s thinking we bloody hate that plane but it sounds awesome

Howling is generated through the gun ports in the wings. What a fantastic sound. Such a beautiful aircraft !
I thought someone taped off their gunports on their P51 to prove that the howling was from the supercharger...or the radiator? I can't remember which?
@@waynesimpson2074 Nope, it's the gun ports.
If the sound were coming from the supercharger, it would be constant during full throttle, you can clearly hear it cutting out when turning one way.
@@waynesimpson2074 That was Vlado Llenoch. After taping the gunports, the howling was gone. You can read about this in the mustangsmustangs.com forum.

Always wondered, now I know
3:39 the whistle makes me love life along with many other things
Man he looks like he’s having the time of his life! What I’d give to be at the controls for a flight! Great video!
Thanks! :)
I adore the Spitfire but I’m in love with the Mustang, always sounds like she’s having the time of her life ❤❤

It's definitely the best American fighter.
American design.....by a displaced German. :)

Amazing howl from that thing!
Gotta love the way she screams

Pure jubilation. Love that plane. Without the landing gear down it looks way more agressive.
Just superb.

No its actually the outboard gun barrels whistling.
Rich boys and their toys.
I love air screws!!!!!!
Wonder if the gun port was specifically designed to make that noise like the stuka dive bomber had that siren
I just felt it wiggle..
50 cals singing whistle while you work.
