My grandfather was a parachuter in the German military in WWII and in northern France in 1944.
When I was a kid, he took me to an air show where also a P-51 was present. You could hear the engine roar even before you could see tha aircraft and he told me: When you heard that sound, you had to take cover.

Sir, do you know which Regiment or Division your Grandfather was in ? My Uncle was in FJR2, dropped on Crete, later in Leningrad, then became part of newly formed FJD4 alongside Folgore Paratroops ? Fought at Monte Cassino then did a 150mile Escape and Evasion before he was captured. He told me similar tales about the "Jabos" on the Eastern Front, and how terrified he was when B17s, then B25s bombed the Abbey. He was the kindest and warmest of all my relatives, always full of fun.

A few years ago we got a visit from 'Vera' - the airworthy Lancaster based in Canada. She landed at Scampton and teamed up with RAF's airworthy Lancaster to tour the country. 8 Merlins on two aircraft.
They performed a display over an old Lancaster base at East Kirkby - home of 'Just Jane' - another Lancaster (in taxyable condition - and being restored to flight eventually).
She had her engines running as the other two flew over in formation. 12 Merlins sang their symphony together in a few hundred yards. Something I will never forget.
There's also been a formation flypast at Duxford of 14 Spitfires - mostly Merlins and a few Griffons - which broke into a tailchase. Glorious .

I had the unique opportunity to chat with a WWII vet who flew mustangs from late 1944 until the end of the war in Europe. He told me that as long as he had a wingman they would jump right in and take on anything less than a dozen or so German fighter planes. Made sense because by the end of the war, the Germans lacked experienced pilots, but still the bravado of our boys flying these beuts!

P-51 Mustangs are simply glorious! What it must have felt like for combat infantrymen to hear that roar and whistle over their shoulders!

Saw these four-ships thrashing at Duxford a few times. Probably the most impressive way to display a P-51.

Now, imagine a whole wing of these beauties climbing out for an escort mission, or coming home from those missions and going into the break.
    Magnificent!!
