The British Matilda Hedgehog is a heavy tank with a mortar on the back of it. It's one of the few vehicles in War Thunder that can actually do indirect fire, though it is extremely difficult to aim. It is an amazing tank regardless.

Pro-tip, the hedgehog mortars are pre-set to a range of exactly 190m, you can't change it but if you're able to get your ranges down perfectly, they become useful 👍

In fact you can slightly adjust the aim upwards, but it is slow, inconvenient and impractical, because you have to look and aim really upwards.

As an Enlisted player i dread the day the Hedgehog is going to be added (For those who don't know, Enlisted and WT use the same engine and all tanks used in the former are imported straight to the latter). Serouusly, 90% of stuff that is useless in WT is busted in Enlisted simply because you have squishy infantry to shoot at
Like the German rocket tanks on Normandy, because they can sit at the ammo point have 280 mm rockets that kill everything within 30 feet. And the only thing that can reach them is planes as they are technically out of bound for the allies
Aren't there infantry that can call in artillery strikes? Wouldn't that work against them?
@mattevans4377 The artillery isn't generally powerful enough to take out a tank. You have to use a bombing run. But the chance of hit for a bombing run is not great, considering you have like two minutes to move out of the blast zone if you're the tank. And it doesn't let you aim into the enemy spawns for obvious reasons, so you absolutely need to use a plane to kill a panzerwerfer whose sitting on the ammo spot

Fun Fact! The Matilda hedgehog is one of the only vehicles to get the 2pdr HE round, which is extremely useful against open top vehicles despite only being a 40mm
Is it historically accurate? As far as I know the 2pdr didn't have HE rounds.

The 2pdr gun did have a HE shell its just it was so ineffective and useless no one bothered to carry it.
@Ext3rmin4tor yes the 2pdr had HE, but it was introduced in October 1942 in very small numbers. But wasn't on the front lines until December 1942. Most units still using 2pdrs did not received the HE shells untill 1944, some only got them in 1945. Only matildas in the Pacific received HE shells due to the late introduction and low priority in production.
The normal Matilda and A.C.1 also get it, which still confuses me as at least the Crusader II should also be able to get it.
@@Ext3rmin4torit did have HE, but they weren't the best. What could be dealt with by 2pdr HE, could also be dealt with the 7.62 machine gun.
One Matilda II variant that could to the game is one that was fitted with a 6-pdr gun in the turret of the Cromwell. Most likely it would be a premium.
You can find that one in WoT^^ It's called Matilda Black Prince.
Sadly it never actually saw combat and was, at best, a test piece. Also as for it being called the Matilda Black Prince, apparently we have no idea where Wargaming come up with that name since it was never used on the actual project.
I feel like the turret would make it pretty useless depending on what BR it's put at. I never understood why they didn't just use the Churchill's 6-pounder turret.

It's easier to lose when you get all the respawn points for yourself, nothing left for your team.

The Tilder is an absolute monster to anything below 2.7 and a turtle flipped on it's back to anything above it.
@@exxusdrugstore300At Arras, Matildas overran German AT positions literally. The gun crews had to scramble in a panic to avoid getting crushed along with their 37mm guns. I bet those Germans thought they were monsters in an almost literal sense

Fun seeing this little gem played. One of its upsides is that it is an event vehicle, so it can actually be used to grind most ground based events, and it doesn't cost too many GJC.
It would be pretty cool to see spook play the Strv 103-0/A/C :)

can we see a video with Spookston using the KV-2 but with the G-530 round? it has almost as much HE filler as the HE round, and it still overpressures things even if you dont pen.
My favorite part of the Matilda Hedgehog is once you fire the rockets the launcher is incredible armor. Everyone just fires at it making them an easier kill.
The first round is how I imagine the one competent Italian tank crew felt when they somehow lost the battle after carrying an entire armor regiment.
Dear god, just imagine a British Matilda, with an American 57mm gun, and a better reverse gear.. that would be terrifying.. (Yes, I know there's a soviet matilda, but still).
If it had an electric transmission like the T1 or the Turan that could reverse at full speed, it would be un-defeatable.
We don't acknowledge the Russian one.

The closest thing to that I can think of is the Matilda black prince in WoT. No clue how historically accurate it is, or if it was just a prototype. It had a Cromwell turret with a 6pdr (a 57mm)
@ethanedwards422 If only they could have made it work and still be effective. The Churchill was a much better tank, but the Matilda has a much more graceful look to it.
5:00 the Zrinyi II and both of the Italian M43 tank destroyers actually have decent armor
One of the Italian TD has the same frontal armor as a Tiger, at a lower br with a decent gun, only weak point is transmission plate.

Don't underestimate the 2 pounder.
FunFact: Mid war a Czech designer in Britain made a squeeze bore barrel Adaptor for the 2 pounder called the "Littlejohn". It squeezed the round into a smaller shape and increased it's velocity. The 2 pounder with this adaptor had better ballistics in everyway than a 6 pounder sabot. A few other nations also copied the idea but the idea really never took off outside a couple of guns due to the extra mechanics required in maintenance.
Hey Spook, I'd like to see you play the Stug III A. It's a really overlooked low tier TD that can work as a brawler with decent armor, good mobility and a quick-reloading point-and click HEAT dispenser.

I don’t know any specific locations you can sit, but if I remember correctly the Matilda’s mortars hit 210m in front of you, assuming you are on flat ground. I might be wrong, but that’s what I remember it hittting at
This is what makes low tier fun, every single player doesn't give a damn about their own survival. There are enemy tanks having a party and you are inviting yourself to it if they like it or not.

The funny thing, the hedgehog rocket flies around ~250m, it's very useful to use it on caps, because the cap shows you exactly the distance you're from it.

It almost LITERALLY is just the Anti-Submarine Projector, simply given a no. 152 fuze from a mark 3 mortar to allow it to be triggered on impact, along with less tubes and a few other slight modifications

"Dig in" means "dig a campsite" so it's quite literal, as in "dig in for the night."
Day 12 You should play a tank with hydropneumatic suspension (recommend the MBT-70) But the catch is you have to drop the suspension as low as it can go for the whole match.

Hey spookston, funny little fact, i just checked out the stats for this Matilda and it seems that you can fire the mortars up to a range of 190 meters, but there is elevation when you point your canon barrel up, so you can shorten the travel distance by elevating the whole mortar rack

on the topic of low tier british tanks, the valentine MK. XI is at the same BR as the matilda and can absolutely bully everything with a 75.

the rockets are ranged to about 180 meters, and since they dont fire in line with the barrel theyre super hard to get consistent hits with but the thing is still a blast to play

Top Tier Matilda and Churchill just feel like bullying. Most things can’t easily pen you and your guns are actually useable (with enough ammo 😆) so you just hold W and react to every non pen and kill it.

It has been a while since I used my hedgehog Matilda but if memory serves, the range on the mortar rounds are pre-set to 200 yards.

Thank you for liking my comment asking you to play the M3 GMC Spookston. I hope you do eventually play it because, if used correctly, it causes absolute havoc up to 4.7 even pushing 5.0 at times and that for someone much less skilled then you such as myself
The Matilda is the same rank of the M15 ""medium"" tank. Italy cant catch a break
5:53 so, Britain did tank doctrine a little differently. We only had 2 types of tanks, the Cruiser tanks (Comet, Cromwell etc) which were lightly armoured & fast to exploit breakthroughs.
We also had Infantry tanks (Churchill, Matilda) which were designed to be infantry support, so were slower & more heavily armoured.
The thinking was there's no point making them go a million miles an hour, because an infantry force isn't going to be able to keep up with them, so instead, give them a shit tonne of armour to protect from frontal fire. And, with how they were envisioning the next war, it would frontal fire, because they were, essentially, expecting WW1 again
