He’s actually not a lockdown defender lol. He’s not the best defensively, but going forward he’s one of the best ever! From 2014-2018 he was head and shoulders above every left back. His partnership with Ronaldo was amazing

Interesting fact is that usually the captain lifts the trophy, but this year when they won benzema was the captain and marcelo was retiring this year so he didn't play the final but at the end benzema gave him the trophy to lift. That's how big marcelo was.... p.s that was the game with the speech 😀

@alexandru stavarache on most football teams, the player who has been longer with the club is the captain , Marcelo was in real since 06-07 , Benzema since 09-10 and Ramos since 05-06 , if Benzema wins something this season he will have the chance to go to Cibeles and lift the trophy. Benzema just wasn't the captain.

Marcelo was never an amazing defender. He was to push the ball on the side and put crosses into ronaldo, benzema etc... He was a solid defender but his dribbling and passing were what made him great. One of the best LB of all time and always a favorite in my heart. #HalaMadrid

He is a left wing; he is in charge of stopping the attackers that come from the right; and at the same time he initiates the offense running the ball forward and eventually crossing the ball to set up the forwards. Wings are a hybrid of defense and ofense; because they sweep and recover the ball but need to be fast, explosive , in great shape and with good dribling to assist the forwards or eventually score. A left wing who can also kick with the right is a danger because he can cross the ball with the left or shoot with the right..That's why he scores too

he was really known for his first touch and his dribbling not so much defending. Don't get me wrong he was a good defender.
he was not the best defensively but vision awareness passing skills understanding the game and be at the right place at the right time was a great player on his day. but if the winger was skilled enough he would be useless b/c he was more like wing back or left winger. this highlights made him look much better than he was when it come to defending.

Last season was his last for Real Madrid was signed at the young age of 18/19 and after years he's living Madrid as the most titles holder for the club 25 trophies he won with Madrid...
P.S he's not retiring just that Madrid are not ready to offer him any more contract so he had to leave after last season champion's league final... And you should know one policy Real Madrid has is that they only offer you a year contract once you clock 30 years old so they can let you go easy when you had a flop season.. The likes of Benzema, Modric, Kross are way over 30 and because they are still on top of their game that's why they are able to secure contract extension which only last a year...

Aight then, I m gonna help ya 2 out here with some info bombs, BUT, these are all subjective, so take em with a pinch of salt. These are my opinions, not absolute facts. So why is Marcelo so important, why is his status legendary: The left back position is very special in football, historically, especially when we re talking about GREAT teams, teams that plan to go all the fuckin way. And this is why: A left back MUST be 99 per cent of the time left footed, which doesnt apply to other left side positions.. wingers, attacking midfielders, inside forwards, whatever role you wanna apply to the players who play on the left side but up front on the offense, they don't need to be left footed. They play on the left side but they can always cut inside in the middle of the park if needed and switch to their strong foot. But not left backs. Left backs will be hugging that goddamn left line of the field for 90% of the game every god damn game. So there goes 75% of your player pool. They re out. You need to look into that other 25% to find a left back. And if you are team whatever, you ll find a couple, sure. They need to understand basic defending, be kindda pacey, have amazing stamina to go up and down for 90 mins and that s about it. Plenty of average-talented good athletes out there to pick from. But not if you re a TOP club. You can't have a "defending" left back. It s simply not good enough. You need someone who is as good as your attacking players on the offense, a player with amazing physical capabilities who is also able to cross a ball 40yds away with accuracy, whose technique is not gonna let him down, who can dribble down the flank past opposing players, who can shoot from average or long distance. You need a world class midfielder basically with the mentality of a devoted defender. And why is that? Cause throughout the season you ll play 12-20 tough matches and 40-50 "easy" matches and in the latter group of games, you need your left and right back players to behave like extra attackers, give options, cause problems because your oppponent on paper is weak therefore defending against them is an afterthought. If you score 4-5 goals against them, who cares about defending. And in order to do that, you need extra personnel on the offense, people who can play as good as your attackers basically. That applies only to TOP tier god mode teams, not to your average joes. These kindda players, as you can understand are very very far and few between. Once a top team gets a hold of one, and he delivers, he proves he is what they thought he is, they usually try and keep him for as long as it gets. Real Madrid found that player ages ago, and his name was Roberto Carlos. The Brazilian legend was ONE of a fuckin kind. People came and left but Roberto Carlos was always there, year in, year out. 370 games in 11 years pretty much. But there comes a time when time catches up on you and R Carlos couldnt cope anymore.. And the "panic" started.. How do you replace someone like him? How do you find a similar version to him when nobody else can? And here comes Marcelo in our story. Comes out of nowhere, to basically replace the irreplaceable. Kid who plays in Brazil, scout report is good, but who knows man, who the fuck knows.. can he play overseas? will he be stressed? homesick? can he handle the pressure? but he doesnt have roberto carlos's unique shooting power.. but he doesnt do this he doesnt do that.. A question mark of a player to wear one of the heaviest football shirts on the planet. So as you can understand expectations were low and uncertainty was everywhere. And here we are now. 15 years later, 386 games later for Marcelo and the discussion is up.. Is he the best left back in Madrid's history.. Has he surpassed Roberto Carlos.. This little brazilian devil did the unthinkable through sheer determination and hard work. He managed to replace one of the best left backs in the HISTORY of football, he managed to be the constant on that starting lineup of Madrid for 15 mofo years, he did it all, out of nowhere. And that s why he is a legend.
