i have no association with adorama what so ever and i have never even purchased something from them but i do learn a lot from their FREE videos. i just dont understand how anyone can seriously get upset with anything that they get for free. they are doing a great job with this channel they dont need people to tell them what to do. adorama doesn't owe you or me a damn thing.
In fairness, theres no one like Gavin H, to explain things clearly and concisely, Top Notch as always
Great video Gavin, well done to Adorama for bringing Gavin on-board.
Gavin's the Greatest. Congratulations to Adorama.
Very pleased to see GavTrain on AdoramaTV. Congrats!
Great video Gavin. I'm glad you're working with Adorama.
Great to see you here Gavin!
Great, you and Mark are the best on Adorama channel. Thanks.
Gavin, I like that you keep your teaching simple enough for a beginner like myself to understand. Clear, concise and relevant!
Gavin is definitely the best. great pickup, Adorama.
I love this style of teaching, it feels like I'm there and you're talking to me one on one.
Gavin does my favourite "How To" videos. Perfect format of 50/50 camera and Photoshop. I think I learned more about Camera RAW from Gavin than from any other source. I lost count of how many times I thought, "Wow... I didn't know you could do that". I just need a cheap light stand for my Yongnuo now.
Great presentation of lighting! Thxx Adorama and Gavin!
Love this video. I learned a LOT and will use your techniques going forward. Cheers !
Great to see you on Adorama - now I get 3x the good Hoey with Gav :-) thanks
Been missing Gavin's Vids nice to see him back
I just learned a ton here and I can't wait to try some of these techniques.
Damn good image for being taken in an alley without thousands of dollars in lighting, soft boxes, boom stands, and umbrellas. Very nice.
Amazing video, Gavin is a phenomenal teacher
I can watch your tutorials endlessly! Everything is fast and clear, without any spare words. Thank you!
gavin great video i didn't knew how the zoom on the flash affect it the light i learn something new thanks !!!!!
Congratulation to both Gavin and Adorama for putting out some great tutorials.
I think this is a great video, its not too difficult to set up yourself and shows the relationship of ambient light to flash using the shutter speed to control the balance. Its one part i think many photographers struggle with, the technology of HSS has made this possible.
I always looking forward to your video, nice to see at adorama
You are the master Gavin!
Welcome to Adorama Gavin. Always liked your videos
By far the best teacher on youtube. Great to see the master back!
All I can say is thank you so much Adorama for including this genius into your programs. He's one of my top favorite photographers who gives me a lot of inspiration! Well done Gavin, great as usual.

Liking the light stand too, what is it. Great video as always from Gavin, hope to see many more as Gavin brings so much real world & down to earth character into the whole photo and PP workflow
Wow,it's amazing lighting technique, please more videos like this.
YES!!!! Gavin Hoey, what a legend... and I was wondering why he wasnt posting on his channel.
Nice work Gavin. The photo turned out great in post, so much more different from the camera capture.
Nice. I've watched him for a long time.
Dear Mr. Hoey,
You should also mention for DSLRs that don't have HSS, you could use an ND filter to bring down the ambient exposure (my entry level DSLR D3300 can't do HSS). and shoot at or below the maximum sync speed of the DSLR of 1/200sec or 1/250sec.
Since these tutorials are meant for beginners, its more likely beginners to own /use entry level DSLRs with limited features. Thanks for the tutorials.
Regards.
Mohd Zakwan Mohamed Zaki Yes, I am using a d3300 as well
afaik, off camera flash with HSS is dependent on the flash model. you can do off camera HSS with D3300, just buy a capable speedlight and trigger. problem solved.
yep correct you just need some dumb speedlight and a HSS trigger and receiver
You are awesome!!! Very informative..
Hello Howie.
You are fabulous. It was a pleasure meeting you at swpp convention London last year. Keep the good videos coming.
All the best sir.
this video has helped me a ton ..literally. between showing use of flash AND post-processing, this is gonna be one of my go to videos in the future. Thanks so much! More like this please, and less like Joe McNally's..lol.
Great work Gavin. I look forward to future episodes. I like the combination of in-camera and post-processing work in the same video. Well done.
Another great tutorial from Gavin
Good stuff Gavin, great guy to listen to, makes it clear and interesting...
Great video for the new series. Can't wait for the next one!
Yes!! You are the best, congratulations. Salud from Barcelona.
wow. you got Gavin? WOW!
Gavin!! hes back!
Great! This is just great!
Great video!! Thanx for posting!! :)
Gavin, this was really well done. Keep it up! We need more of these!
So great!!!
Awesome video!
drop by and support Gavin. Thumbs Up if you're here because Gavin!
Gavin you are the best
Clear instructions , Great tutorial ! thanks Gavin !
You also get a shorter flash duration and faster recycle times (or more flashes per burst when you're still above the minimum firing charge level on the capacitor). When it doesn't "cost" to use a slightly higher ISO (the noise isn't much of a factor -- it can be on some types of shots -- and you don't have to use an ND filter to get the shutter speed down) it just sort of becomes a habit you don't think about much, and probably wouldn't think to explain.
Great job!
w/out the photoshop it already been a nice shot! i'll make my kids as my model! tnx for the idea!,,,keep it up Gavin!!
Gavin your awesome! the ideas you have is fantastic. I'm so keen to get into portraits so I can get awesome creative shots of my daughter's - just need lighting lol.
Skittzy he is definitely great
Gavin and Bryan Petersen are great
Gavin you are awesome
Ever green Gavin….. love his tuts.
If you do not have high speed flash sync, you must make your aperture as narrow as possible to achieve a good exposure. Not much else you can do. (You may be able to use an ND filter if you have access to one)
Really helpful!
Probably the best video of urs
i love your videos sir...you are awesome..
Excellent!
Great video. Learned so much so thanks!
this is great! I am just a beginner. Actually I was afraid to start lighting. Getting it slowly. You don't mention what power you have the flash set at though...trying this today
Marie Van Hecke power was TTL (through the lens) which is basically auto flash power
Great video I wish I would've stuck with my Nikon to pick up some of that equipment you're using
Good video Gavin...nicely explained.
Nice to see you on Adorama.
Houses in the UK have more character than the US...very nice.
Great tutorial, thanks for sharing.
That was a really nice photo
great video!
Yep,great video Gav, as always
Wow! Excellent video! Thank you!
@AndeHollis siny has ttl compatible flashes..check out the metz 50 af1 or the sony brand ones too f43am and hlv56 something like that I forgot the names
Brilliant!!!..
hi Gavin I was wondering were you were nice to know you are back and now on Adorama Great.
Good work, Gavin! This "from shooting to finished picture"concept is great! Keep up the good work! Btw, i would really like to explain us, why you chose to go to high speed mode, insread of lower to ISO...
Too awesome
Awesome thanks 👍🏻
Would you say that for a portrait like this, no need of a light diffuser? Not even a reflector to fill in the shadows?
I guess it all depends on the look we're going for 🙃
What was the lens 24-105?? And what was your flash power??? Thank you for this video
just awesome
Really great video. I learned a lot!
What?!!!gavin hoey on adoramatv?!!!wow
Amazing tutorial always!😀
